Pelican State is not a classroom oriented pro- gram, but instead, it cen- ters around the government and its functions. Through- out the week everyone was drilled in and experienced the basics of government at all three levels: city, par- ish, and state. Hundreds of students throughout the state attended this pro- gram, which also resulted in new friendships and acquaintances . ' Presidential Classroom Held in Washington Presidential Classroom is sponsored each year to give young Americans the opportunity to encounter and explore the many fac- ets of our American gov- ernment. Through personal involvement and interac- tion with various institu- tions and leaders of the nation, the student comes in contact with the issues. concerns and challenges involved in the political process. This year Mark Leblanc and Cathi Fontenot were the two outstanding students who were chosen to repre- sent LaGrange in Washing- ton, D.C. Queen Penny escorted by her father, Mr. Edward Comeaux. Octagon Club Plans Monument A rebuilt Octagon Club began a very successful year long before the school doors opened last August. Delegates representing the LaGrange chapter attended the state convention where a LaGrane member, Ricky Dupuis, was elected State President. Key projects this year were boosting the spirit by selling football bumper stickers and signs. For the largest project, members voted to erect a monument on the front lawn with a cost of nearly S1,000. This was done under the leadership of Mrs. Bruno and Mrs. Hoffman. Service projects included gifts to a nursing home and attending the American Model Association Convention in August. OFFICERS - First row: Ricky Dupuis Ckneelingj. president. After being predicted to finish second to last in district , the Gators set out to prove that they were real contenders for district championship. And that they did! By the end of the season, the Gators had earned an 8-1-1 record, a tie with Sulphur for district championship, and the right to play Neville in the state playoffs. Gator spirit and determination was evident throughout the entire season. The offense had field days against Barbe and Westlake. When they were down 6-0 by Acadiana with only seconds remaining, the offense came alive with one of the most spectacular touchdown passes of the year. You ask about defense? Ask Crowley, ask Wood- lawn, ask Lake Charles High because this year the Gator defense earned the right to be called the iron-curtain defense . How did they do it? Some say it was luck, oth- ers say it was teamwork. Maybe they are all right. One thing is for sureg 1975 will always be remembered as the year the Gators came alive! Leon Lav- Lady Gator Basketball Team Has Successful First Year The 1975-'76 basketball season marked the first year for LaGrange to field a girls' basketball team, and considering this, the season was certainly a suc- cess. - Although the season was not over when the RESUME went to press, the team will probably end up with a 16-2 record and second place in the district. This will put them in the state playoffs the very first year. Some of the highlights of the season included a double over-time 58-56 loss to New Iberia, which was last year's state runner-up in 4-A girls' basketball, and beating Sulphur, Lake Charles, and Barbe Calso first year teamsb in dis- trict play . This year's team does not have a super star, but hustle and spirit have been factors in their success . With the return of all but two members next year, the outlook for another successful season appears likely. The relays should be the strongest event for the Gator girls this year with three members returning from last year's team which went undefeated in the 440 Relay until the state meet where they placed second. I f Pete Crawford Princqnal Principa1's Message: The arrival of this issue of the RESUME marks the completion of another school year at LaGrange Senior High School. Soon the Senior Class of '76 will leave LaGrange to continue their education or become productive members of our community. As this class is leaving, another freshman class is preparing to begin its four-year stay at our school. Even though education can be viewed as a continuous. rather monoto- nous process, it is seldom looked upon as monotonous by the people who are actively engaged in it. People who are active in the educational process know that there are interesting and exciting events, names, and faces associated with each school year. Some of the events of the past year that come to mind are tying for the district football championship, the band's rating superior at Gulfport, a good season for the new girls' basketball team, the girls' track team's winning the state championship last spring, and superior ratings by the chorus and other groups. Competing on an individual basis, LaGrange students certainly won their share of scholarships, events in the literary rally, and places on the honor roll. With these thoughts in mind, I wish to express my sincerest apprecia- tion to the students, faculty, and staff for the way each person has helped to make 1975-'76 one of the best years that any of us have spent at LaGrange. I also wish to express my appreciation to the yearbook staff for recording the people and events of this year in the RESUME. D QQZL 'fl f i K ., 4 5 1 i 1 fl MR.
