The field of scientific progress stretches before us as a vast unexplored region, which challenges and thrills the imagination. Aviation, radio, radar, atomic energy are symbolic of man's age- old struggle to master the earth. Peace and reconstruction have likewise brought us in sight of a second frontier, as rugged and overtowering as a mountain range, it is-world co-operation. Peace can fade like a mirage unless people learn to get along with other people. This frontier, too, is challenging. The Charter of the Allied Nations is symbolic of manis age-old struggle to master himself. As Americans, we are still on the frontiers. We who are in high school are climbing the hill at sunrise. From the heights We hope to catch a view from the Atlantic to the Atlantic-the world over. Like our forefathers we need faith and courage for the problems ahead. Far more than they, we need education. In whatever measure this, the 1946 GRANGER, shows life at L. H. S., it reveals our equipment for life on the new frontier. Intellectual enli htenment will q S be the ma'or defense a ainst our real enemies-i norance, disease, overt , crime. And I P science demands the know-how era. We must be ready. Here at L. H. S. we feel that we are stepping out to meet the new era by adding, for the first time, a twelfth grade. Although small in this period of transition, it is the beginning of advanced learning. This grade will meet the need for diversified subjects, maturity of thought, and clearer judgment in selection of a life work. It seems worthy and needed equipment for the present time. In this, our chapter on classes, we bid good-bye to the mid-term seniors, for graduation in January, started fourteen years ago, will end with the 1946 class. So farewell and good luck, Winter Wonders! Sophisticated sophomores of this year must enjoy their privileges, for next year the newcomers will be termed fresh men. At L. H. S., as at all schools, classes must hold the spotlight. It is our purpose to have a school as good as the best. To this aim we must stand solidly on classes. 4: fi ,J-T Y 5 f- , X-4 X I9 xv- - vxxy lfvf. F Q we-B3 'f f , Xfv .gl y '--W, Q. lfhm N' fs- 7 'Srl X 10 Q.. ACTIVITIES On the frcntiers of our new era, East and West have met. Here problems so entangled arise that even the light of education is not sufficient. But there is adequate equipment- faith in God and a sense of the brotherhood of man. Co-operation is the watchword through the passes of this wilderness. Here we present our chapter on activities, for it is the clubs at L. H. S. that afford most opportunity for spiritual, social, and civic development. They run the gamut from fine art to applied arts, from pure sciences to social sciences. They are sufficient in number and variety for everyone to have an opportunity to follow his bent and learn how to get along with his fellow students. Clubs meet regularly once a month. Some, however, like the Glee Club, meet twice every week, or like the Clarion or GRANGE!! staffs just before publication, meet continu- ously. Each club has a definite objective of study or service. Almost every club enjoys a social some time or other during the year, when refreshments are an added attraction. Leadership, co-operation, and the democratic pattern of life are the equipment forged in clubs. We have tried to 'present in the GRANGER life at L. H. S., to make the book an accurate record, and to give it a theme that reflects world thought today. O U R C O V E R In this time of scientific marvels, we have chosen to typify an invention which is not new, but which is fundamental in the realm of progress- the invention of printing. The cover design of our GRANGER does not portray two blocks, as one might suppose, but two sticks of type. Amidst our new scientiiic wonders, we pause to pay tribute to this invention of old as a most powerful factor on the frontiers of today and of future years. f 40 Neu' Sviefztific Formula: Radiation of 28 nd collectors, dime squeezer for each club. one Fat, posers Q50 ar Il timej, several Bettys, a couple of Bones, Ford car named jerry, miscellaneous summoners and interrupters, one camera, and 150 dummy sheets. This era of atomic energy is likely to be wearing on the nerves. So we need doubly the benefits that exercise and recreation bring. At LaGrange High, as usual, football and basketball hold the spotlight. The football season can be characterized as one of unusually interesting games. A mixture of spec- tacular plays,' fumbles, bad breaks, and genuinely good teamwork made each game a thriller, to which the town turned out in record-breaking crowds. Plans are being dis- cussed for a new stadium, and a loud speaker for the field is in the offing. ' Basketball season is now coming up. With our new gymnasium still in the architect's hands, we shall again accept the privilege of Calumet Community House and the Cal- laway Auditorium. Prospects for the season are good. With Coach Mariotti in charge, we can expect expert playing and a peak of basketball enthusiasm. At L. H. S. we are looking forward to a larger program of athletics as we see our new building grow in stature. When re-established at home base all of us expect to have the opportunity of participating in sports. tgfm--' . f' X i 1 S, - su, Z 1-it FQ A frtrvfj 38:13 444, is ' M QVXJQQX 12: F U:g35- KR +Iqx Y- 7 ar' S4 'K ,K 'ML , Q -in v - W ' wz , , ,F ' X A r ' - Milvf-VNVA' i , .M M A 535, 1 W- 'ef W 'f3 'Qf'- 3 ', V , Am A3 it E K 'Quik K . But as keen an eye and as skilled a hand will be necessary to meet thc ever increasing competition in business. In our last chapter, we present the notices of our advertisers, who have so generously given us their support. They show us the way in the reality of earning a living. We would like this chapter to typify the new frontier of economic security for all. Life at L. H. S. represents only the bed rcck of this frontier- a general education.
