SMITH HALL This past summer renovation of historic Smith Hall began. Constructed in 1842 of brick which was hand formed of native clay, Smith Hall is the oldest building on the campus. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the oldest brick buildings in this region and as one of the oldest private college buildings in Georgia. The cost will be just over $2 million and completion of the project is expected to take one and a half years. Funds for the project were made possible by a matching grant of $1 million from the Callaway Foundation and from support of various alumni and friends of the College. In the renovation, the columns, affectionately known to students through the years as Mat- thew, Mark, Luke, and John, will not be dis- turbed. The existing exterior brickwork will be restored and the roof will be replaced. A new three-story stair tower will be added between the rear wings of the building. 10 Smith Hall
