Cartoonist Visits Alma Mater On Friday, November 1, 1985, Dean Young returned to LaGrange College after being away for 25 years. Young is the script writer for the comic strip Blondie . Chic Young started writing the strip in the 1 930 ' s. With his death in 1973, his son Dean Young inherited the strip and has been writing the script ever since. Currently the comic strip is published in over 2,000 newspapers. Young stated that when returning to LaGrange, he had fond memories. It was like coming home in a different way. He also said that it was a fun experience. Dean Young learned of LaGrange College through friends who had attended the college. He visited LC and later decid- ed that this was the place for him. He liked the atmosphere that he saw. He stated that everybody knew everybody else. He went on to say, other colleges and universities don ' t have this. This was one of the determining factors that brought D ean Young to LaGrange College. While here at LaGrange, he did not major in art. He received a degree in business administration. He has fond memories of Dr. Zachary Taylor, who guided me in my academia. After graduating from LaGrange, Dean Young did not plan on working on his father ' s comic strip. Young first went to work for an advertising agency. Eventually, he wanted to own his own advertising agency. About two years after gradu- ation, he started working for his father, and in 1973 he inher- ited the comic strip. He has worked on the Blondie comic strip for 23 years. Dean Young has the hill in his heart. He remembers all of the good times that he had here on campus. He stated that he could see the improvements, spectacular new buildings, but it is pretty much the way it was. LC At his 25th class reunion, Dean Young (far right) is welcomed back to LaGrange College. Standing with him in front of the Blondie comic strip exhibit in the Lamar Dodd Art Center are, left to right. Penny Young, Dean ' s wife; Cary McCallum, SGA Men ' s vice-president and Student Homecoming Chairman; and Bobby Dooley, SGA president.
