SAMUEL G. HORNSBY, JR. Dr. Hornsby began teaching at LaGrange College in 1966, and since then he has worked diligently to make significant con- tributions to his profession. He is presently the Chairman of the Department of English and Division of Humanities. Dr. Hornsby received his Bachelor ' s of Science in Education and Master ' s of Arts from the University of Geor- gia. He then earned his Ph.D. from Auburn University. Dr. Hornsby is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and twice recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Above all, he is 41 and still has most of his hair, which means, that 1 still love the way 1 make a living. 4 Opening As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Opening! 5 Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. 6 1 Opening If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser per- sons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing for- tunes of time. Exercise caution in your business af- fairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. 10 1 ' Opening Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. 12 1 Opening Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imagin- ings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. In- volvement on the Hill is stimulated by friendships, religious organiza- tions, sports, academics, and the Greek life. Each provides a means by which we satisfy our interest and provide ourselves with a sense of security. The more we become in- volved, the more we get from life on the Hill. Mary Bryan represented the Pi Kappa Phi Little Sisters. Maria Phillips served as Maid of Honor and represented the Pi Kappa Phi Pledges. First runner-up went to Beth Floyd of Alpha Omicron Pi so- rority. Kendra Tucker, representing Hawkes First Floor, was named sec- ond runner-up; and Lori Medlock of Phi Mu sorority was chosen third runner-up. Lora Smith was crowned queen at the annual Quadrangle Dance. Each year the SGA sponsors the Quadrangle Dance which is held near Valentine ' s Day. Members of the court are selected by the student body. Quadrangle 1 91 May Day The 1983 May Day festivities proved to be spectacular fun and en- joyment. The weather was excel- lent, and the sound of music filled the air. Queen Lora Smith and King Wayne Johnson led the way for a beautiful court. Moms and dads from all over Georgia (and el se- where) came to join the pride and spirit of May Day on the Hill. Among the competition of step singing, a sense of unity prevailed to enhance the thrill of victory and ac- complishment. This year ' s May Day began and continued the tradi- tions of springtime on the Hill. 921 May Day Carolyn Fox and Mark White Senior Representatives Cathy Cooper and Mark Grantham Junior Representatives t i Melanie Cowart and Tim Reeve Senior Representatives Beth Floyd and Harlan Hendricks Junior Representatives May Day 193 Amy Bailey and Ben Dozvell Kim Hines and Phil Dodson Freshman Representatives Freshman Representatives 94 May Day Step Singing Competition Kappa Delta Sorority Phi Mu Sorority May Day 195 Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority All-Female Competition Three organizations participated in the All-Women ' s Competition of Step singing. Kappa Delta Sorority, un- der the direction ofElisa White, presented a tribute to the late Karen Carpenter, and the Phi Mu Sorority, under the direction of Mary Bryan Lambries, presented Songs of the South. The Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, under the direction of LouAnne Abernathy, successfully regained the championship cup with their presentation of Broad- way Show Stoppers. 961 May Day Delta Tau Delta Fraternity All-Male Competition Being the only entry in the All-Men ' s Competition did not discourage the Delts from presenting a fabulous tribute to America. From the Star Spangled Banner to Yankee Doodle Boy, the Delts, under the direction of Andrew Stone, presented an enjoyable and well-re- hearsed medley. Perhaps in the future there will be more competition for the All-Men ' s category; but for now, the Delts hold the honor May Day 1 97 Association of Black Collegians 98 1 May Day Baptist Student Union Mixed Competition Three organizations competed in the Mixed Ensemble category of Step singing. Wesley Felloivship, under the direction of Becky Welch, presented a medley of Broad- way Musical Hits; and the ABC Choir presented several Gospel selections. The Baptist Student Union, under the direction of Jeana Gaylor and Randy Underwood, cap- tured the title with their presentation of all time christian favorites. May Day 199 100 May Day 101 SGA The SGA sponsors all activities involving students. Highlights of the 1982-83 academic year include the Activities Fair, a trip to the World ' s Fair, a ski trip, Homecom- ing, Quadrangle and May Day Dances. Movies, concerts, and Step Singing all add to the life of students at LC. 102 Organizations Wayne Johnson, Karen Young, Melanie Wright, Mark White, and Charles Dean. Legislative Council Sitting: Gail Benner, Anne Kruger, Vicky e Martin, Becky Welch, Lisa Bonner, and Sarah McKinney; Standing: Elaine Jackson, Maria Phillips, Tony Bostardi, Jon Elmore, Margaret Davis, and Luanda Sparks. The Legislative Council is composed of one represen- tative from each campus organization. The council is asked by SGA to decide how to regulate funds for various activities. The members serve as mediators between SGA and the organizations. The council also serves as SGA messengers to the entire campus. Organizations 103 Hilltoppers Sitting: Lisa Bonner, Laurell Allen, Cassandra Williams, Jane Wheeler, Denise Roberts, and Melanie Wright; Standing: Amy Parsons, John Harper, Scott Dezell, Mark White, Tom Helton, Lora Smith, and Luanda Sparks; Missing: Wayne Johnson, Bryce Neal, Karen Young, Nancy Blankenship, Jenny Horton, Beth Floyd, and Missy Roane. The Hilltoppers serve as greeters of Alumni for Homecoming, LaGrange Probe Fair, and the Trustee Luncheon. They serve as ushers for forums, host high school visitation weekend, and serve refreshments for the Activities Fair and Computer Science Seminar. 104 Organizations Circle K Sitting: Jin Chang, Anne Wilson, Jane Wilson, Anna Stitchcomb, Tammy Smith, Cindy Burling, Becky Harris, and Ana Aldridge; Standing: Tracy Jackson, David Matheny, Kim Hines, Charles Dean, Chris Rumble, Michael Culpepper, Le Ann Hines, Mark White, Bill Hague, Renee Eller, Chance Whitaker, Randy Underwood, Jon Elmore, and Beth Steel. Circle K is involved in many service projects in the LaGrange community. Members work the concession stand at the Basketball games, help set up equipment for the Red Cross Blood Drive and work with children at the Youth Treatment Center. Circle K also raises money for the March of Dimes and the Muscular Dystrophy Asso- ciation. Organizations 105 Rotaract First Row: Anne Wilson, Snyder Wright; Second Row: Charlie Hyman, Michael Culpepper, Sarah McKinney, Ms. Dyar; Third Row: Lynn Wright, Kay Strauss, Bea Spires, Gail Benner; Fourth Row: Jon Elmore, Elaine Jackson, Jane Cooley, Charles Dean, Walter Hearn; Fifth Row: John Harper, Mark Grantham, and Neal Peavy. Rotaract is sponsored by Rotary International. Its purpose is to develop leadership and responsible citizen- ship through various service activities. These activities include nursing home visitation and collecting money for the American Cancer Society. Two members attend weekly meetings of the LaGrange Chapter of Rotary International. 106 Organizations Phi Beta Lambda Phi Beta Lambda is the organiza- tion for Business Administration majors. Dr. Zachary Taylor advises this group and provides various ac- tivities and seminars to help the members learn more about Business Administration and the business world. Alpha Mu Gamma Alpha Mu Gamma is the national collegiate foreign language honor society. Membership is extended to students having at least two grades of A and a third grade of at least B in unrepeated college foreign language courses. Organizations 107 SNEA The Student National Education Association is dedicated to enrich- ing the caliber of tomorrow ' s teach- ers. Throughout the year, SNEA schedules speakers and seminars to encourage both practical skills and creativity. Several members attend- ed the National and Regional SNEA workshops where they acquired useful information, resources, and techniques which they in turn con- veyed to the other members. % tt T V s Sitting: Darby Wilson, Lynn Wright, Nancy Winter; Standing: Debi Keith, Jane Cooley, David Matheny, and Margie Dooley. GANS The Georgia Association of Nurs- ing Students sponsors programs of interest to those students becoming nurses. This year GANS held a yard sale as a fund raising project and will help sponsor the pinning cere- mony for the graduating sophomore students. Mary K. Williams and El- len Griesbach serve as advisors. The 1982-83 officers are Debbie Earley, President; Lori Keeble, Treasurer; Dana Frazier, Secretary; and Dottie Wright, Vice President. Chris Hester, Patricia Davis, Erma Cooke, Gloria Tolliver, Janet Todd, Mike Johnson, Margaret Hamilton, Betty Britt, and Patty Moore. 108 1 Organizations Pi Gamma Mu Pi Gamma Mu, Georgia Delta Chapter, is a national social science honorary fraternity. Membership is extended to advanced students in the social science disciplines of his- tory, sociology, political science, economics, and geography. Each year at the Honor ' s Day festivities, the recipient of the Weston L. Mur- ray Award is named. Dr. Zachary Taylor, Robert Koon, Mr. Ronnie McGaughey, Dr. Frederick Mills, Mrs. Mildred Harwell, Dr. David Hess, Gail Benner, Mr. Burton Lowe, Dr. David Naglee, and Dr. David McQuilkin. It evolved from the efforts of women ' s fraternities to work together coop- eratively. The Council strives for good scholarship to maintain high standards for the best service to the college community. They sponsor Fall Rush and present scholastic certificates each quarter to sorority women with an average of 3.6 or better. Kappa Delta Sorority was founded October 23, 1897 at Longwood College in Virginia. The Delta Chi Chapter of Kappa Delta, first national sorority established at LC, was installed on January 30, 1971. Kappa Delta stresses the importance of a well-rounded college life. She encourages scholarship, leadership, ac- tivities, philanthropy, and high standards. The KD Ladies support the national philanthropy, the Crippled Children ' s Hospital in Richmond, VA, as well as their local philanthropy, the Royal Elaine Nursing Home. The KD ' s also held retreats, a Big Sister Scavenger Hunt, a pledge alumni dinner, participated in step sing- ing, sports, spring banquet, and a Parent ' s Day. This sorority is for black female collegiates. They sponsored a candy fund raising drive spring quarter and won second place in the car competition in the Homecoming parade. LaGrange College finished the 1982-83 basketball season as the number one team in the NAIA Dis- trict 25 play-offs. Under the leader- ship of Coach Hugh Corless, the Panthers tied with North Georgia College for the championship of the GJAC. The LC Panthers ended their season with an overall record of 18- 7 and a conference record of 12-2. Sam Cotton, Mitch Hanson, and Jerome (Rock) Woodyard served as tri-captains for the 1982-83 season. 132 Basketball Basketball 133 The Panthers not only excelled as a team this year, but they also man- aged to excel individually. Jeff Cot- ton was named to the 1982-83 NAIA All-America second team and was named College Basketball Player of the Month for Small Col- leges. Ken Alexander was named NAIA District 25 Player of the Week and recipient of the Al Mar- iotti 110% Award. Coach Hugh Corless was named 1983 Coach of the Year by the GIAC and NAIA District 25 divisions. Jan Hogan, women ' s athletic coach, stepped into the 1982 varsity volleyball season with strong deter- mination and enthusiasm. This be- ing the second year for varsity vol- leyball and only four players re- turning, Coach Hogan endeavored to lay the foundation for building a good program through fundamen- tals, abilities, and experience on the court. Although the team faced strong opposition throughout the season, they played excellent ball. They finished the season with three wins and eleven losses; however, they placed fourth in the District 25 Tournament. The leading scorers for the Lady Panthers were Jamie McCann (91) and Lisa Ballew (90). 138 1 Volleyball In regular season play, LC defeated Oglethorpe Uni- versity two out of three matches, Spelman one out of two matches, but fell to Mercer of Atlanta, West Georgia, Augusta College, and North Georgia College. The women ' s varsity volleyball team has a bright and successful future ahead of them. They are no longer new to the collegiate circuit and should be bringing home the District title very soon.
