Gone, dreams of the past, Gone with a love that moved too fast . . . Our dreams, desires, achievements, and failures are demonstrated through busy activities as well as moments of solitude. The friendships we cling to become more precious as time passes. The rapid pace we set in our youth pushes our hopes and visions aside. The bright, optimistic days of our youth give us a chance to experience love, friendship, and devotion. As we gain knowledge we realize our limitations, and become restless as we travel toward the uncertain days ahead. . . . Why did we love then run away? So little time, so much left to say — And now it ' s gone. The moments we shared pointed out our individuality and directed us toward the paths we must follow. Our deepest feelings, often com- municated only through a touch or a glance, are left verbally unexpressed until the days are gone. Hectic class schedules and many varied outside activities give these youthful days a sense of uneasiness and agitation. This restive energy bottled within us can be used creatively to better or destroy our future. On the average students spend more time per day in Mike ' s Cafe than they do in classes. Here Cathy Lee (right) plots to pour a glass of water on Bonnie Sutton (left). But Redina Freeman is just in time to become the victim. 26 Dorm Daze acclaimed tropical fun for all A luau complete with a roast pig, hula contests, colorful leis and Hawiian music was held for dornitory students on Wednesday, April 26. The luau, which was formally scheduled to take place at S unny Gables, was held in the cafeteria in- stead, because of the tropical winds and rains that left the girls in grass skirts shivering. The luau was sponsored by the resident assistants and began in the gym with various games such as the tube race, jump-rope contests, hula- hoop contests, an obstacle course, and a run-around-the-island. DR. WAIGHTS G. HENRY, JR.: A SALUTE Under the administration of Dr. Henry, LaGrange College has become recognized as one of the strongest small Liberal Arts Colleges in the Southeast. From fifteen graduates in 1948, the graduating class has grown to almost two hundred students. During these years the college has also grown by 600% enrollment, 15% faculty, 13 buildings, and three million dollars. The library, after being moved from Quillian, has grown from 1,000 to ap- proximately 65,000 books. Teaching equipment, once only a few maps and microscopes, now consists of sophisticated equipment in math, business administra- tion, language, and science. Despite these phenomenal changes, Dr. Henry feels that his administration will be best remembered 100 years from now for acquisitions made in the area of the fine arts. Because of the President ' s interest in art, many works have come to the college by artists such as Lamar Dodd, Albert Christ-Janer, Carl Holtey, Charles Hargins, Athos Menaboni, and Edward Shorter. The College owns a 17th century Spanish oil painting and an 18th century tapestry woven in Brussels. Other works include a sculptured head of Lamar Dodd by James F. Thompson, A bronze statue of John Wesley by Marshal Daugherty, and a bronze copy of a 5th century B.C. Greek shepherd boy. Dr. and Mrs. Leland D. Case have donated an Indian art collection. This collection contains art and artifacts of the Hopi , Sioux, Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache Nations. Finally, LaGrange College owns two Cowboy Equestrian Statues by Harry Jackson: Two Champs and Bronc Stomper. One is from the mold of the statue given to Queen Elizabeth II in Nov. 1976 by President Gerald Ford. 28 In connection with Dr. Henry ' s interest in French General LaFayette, LaGrange College owns many works associated with this man. Among these are a statue of LaFayette by Eugene Hiolle, a bisque by Jean Antoine Houdon, a 140-year-old book collection on LaFayette and his wife, Adrienne, as well as lithographs, maps, and other related articles. Dr. Henry was presented, on July 4, 1975, with the flag that flew over LaFayette ' s grave in Paris for one year. However, the most outstanding work is the bronze statue of LaFayette located on the LaGrange Town Square. This statue, owned by LaGrange College, is on permanent loan to the town. Aside from this well-known interest in LaFayette, there are many sides to Waights G. Henry. His hobbies include reading and speech writing. He also writes a column for the Columbus Ledger Enquirer, as he has done for 28 years. Dr. Henry ' s days are busy but he always manages to take a lunch break and watch SEARCH FOR TOMORROW with Mrs. Henry. He also enjoys KOJAK and, of course CHARLIE ' S ANGELS. So, this is Dr. Waights G. Henry, Jr.— a man of many talents and interests. Dr. Henry, thank you for these past thirty years and all you have done for LaGrange College. For all these outstanding accomplishments, we salute you! At left, Mrs. Henry proudly poses with her husband. Even students who don ' t like most Forums at LaGrange College packed into Price Theater on March 7, 1978 to hear a speaker who promised to be completely different. Daddy King, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., held the audience ' s attention as he spoke of his own life as a guide and example for young adults. This forum proved to be among the best for the year at LaGrange College. Floats, Festivities add to Homecoming excitement Everyone, from the oldest Alumni to the first quarter freshman, feels the excitement of Homecoming either through the student Alumni basketball game, crowning the Queen, watching the parade, or attending the Homecoming dance. But the play depicts the spirit of American small town life anywhere. In review of the play, a critic said, One can still get the feeling that the story they see un- folding holds something of their own growing up, marrying, living, and dying. Below, the Stage Manager, played by Greg Gurley, standing, directs the wedding of Emily Webb and George Gibbs, played by Elizabeth Speir and Scott Snyder. Left, Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs, played by John Driscoll and Judy Kessler, seem to recall favorite moments of their past lives. Panthers close with 20-12 record LaGrange College closed out its 1977-78 Basketball season with 20 wins and a return to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District— 25 playoffs. The P anthers, ranked third in the GIAA and coached by Phil William- son, ended their regular season with a 10-6 conference mark that includ- ed wins over every team in the con- ference, and compiled a 10-12 overall record. Panther senior starting guard Garry Patterson was named to both the GIAC and District 25 NAIA teams. Patterson and junior starting guard Tommy Darrah were both ranked as high as sixth in the NAIA national Statistics during the regular season. In a season marred by upsets, the Panthers put together their finest ef- fort in the role of underdogs, posting an emotional 95-91 win over con- ference champion Southern Tech in the final regular season game. The Most Valueable Player Award in Men ' s Tennis went to Per Karlsson, and the coach ' s award in tennis went to Bob Mainor. The men ' s tennis team, coached by Robert Williams, had a 13-5 record, the most successful tennis record in the school, and tied for second place in the GIAC. The women ' s tennis team, coach- ed by Janet Ainsworth, finished with a 5-2 record, its most successful season, and took third place in an in- vitational tournament in Atlanta. 59 The LaEAYETTE FREE 10:00 HOUR? Asserting his determination that LaGrange College will not be just a little Georgia State or Emory, Dr. Waights G. Henry, Jr. explained his op- position to a student and faculty-supported recommendation that the 10 o ' clock hour be used for class instruction. It has been a long-standing tradition at LC that the 10 o ' clock hour be reserved for convocations, organization meetings, and just socializing. As Dr. Shackelford put it, the 10 o ' clock hour is more im- portant for socializing than for classes. The Faculty Curriculum Committee appointed by Dr. Shackelford to make suggestions for improve- ment to the LC program had offered as one of six proposals that the 10 o ' clock hour be utilized for class instruction since it is an hour of maximum ef- ficiency for both teachers and students. It would also allow commuting students, who make up over 50% of the student body, more opportunity to fit class schedules into a commuting time-table, especially for those students with family responsibilities. The Faculty Committee considered the 10 o ' clock change at the recommendation of representatives of the S.G.A. who submitted a petition signed by 331 students (of 336 sampled) who favored freeing the hour. Most commuting students don ' t use this time to socialize, commented S.G.A. President David Hancock. Moreover, he stated that many classes are being held, in addition to labs, which regularly run into the 10 o ' clock hour on restricted days. The Faculty Committee ' s recommendation, favored by a 33 to 10 vote of the faculty, was rejected by the Academic Advisory Council, made up of divi- sion chairman and Administrative officers. The re- jection coming in a 5 to 4 vote caused Dr. Shackelford to comment, there ' s no need to change something unless it is a marked improvement. It just so happened that mine was the deciding vote. Questioned about the vote which went counter to the faculty vote at large, AAC members declined. However, one member was quoted as saying, No comment, no comment at all. It ' s too hot an issue. At a subsequent 10 o ' clock faculty meeting to dis- cuss the rejection of the recommendation, two of the members of the Academic Advisory Council were unable to attend because they, themselves, were teaching 10 o ' clock classes. The S.G.A. Legislative Council has presented a request to the faculty and the Academic Advisory Council for reconsideration of the recommendation. Hancock said, The issue is closed. The student representatives have done all they can do. Perhaps in the future . . . END OF AN ERA It is the end of an era. Dr. Waights G. Henry, presi- dent of LaGrange College for the past 30 years, has handed in his resignation. It isn ' t really good-bye, however, because Dr. Henry will be assuming new duties in the newly created post of chancellor. As Chancellor for the college, Dr. Henry will work to ob- tain endowments for the college. Dr. Charles Hagood will succeed Dr. Henry to become LaGrange College ' s 20th president. Dr. Henry ' s 30 years of service to LaGrange College is longer than that of any other president in the 147 years since the institution was first establish- ed. He began his term in 1948. At that time L.C. was an all-women ' s college with 144 students, 17 faculty members, and four buildings. LEDGER VOL. 1 NO. 1 LaGRANGE COLLEGE SPECIAL FIRST EDITION FIFTEEN CENTS price may be higher outside retail trading zone KING DAVID REIGNS Today it was announced that former S.G.A. presi- dent, David Hancock, will return to L.C. next fall to occupy the newly-created office of S.G.A. chancellor. The former president said the decision to remain at LC was largely based on the fact that no graduate school would accept him. The office of chancellor is a position of great responsibility. The job requires, along with the lesser duties of the of- fice, that Hancock sell popcorn at movies and check ID ' s at dances. Hancock was well known during his presidency for his strong politics. He introduced a new atmosphere to the campus. A student summed it up in one word, tyranny. Because of his royal bearing an d glib tounge, Han- cock has affectionately been referred to as his eminence. Most students, however, simply ignored him. Hancock made great advancements in the fight against student apathy. At the end of his term he proudly announced that apathy was now limited to students currently enrolled at the college. Hancock, along with Noel Burt, also received the first annual Waights Henry Leadership Award. The award is given to the student(s) that most actively demonstrate leadership ability and skill. Hancock said his only disappointment in office was not having the new student center named after him. SOB ' S RETURN TO LC When the administration of a Methodist college scheduled a group of SOB ' s to sing for the student body, it was something to think about. When the same administration offered Forum credit for atten- ding the performance, it was a must to attend! The group of SOB ' s appeared at LC on Jan. 9, during winter quarter. The Group ' s actual name is The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus from Yale University. This was a return performance for the SOB ' s to the college, and were well received by the students and faculty. The SOB ' s put Michelle Hays in the limelight as they sing Let Me Call You Sweetheart. 30 Additional Spaces The addition of 30 parking spaces in front of New Dorm, Turner, Pitts and Manget has alleviated the parking problem at LaGrange College. Prior to the addition of the new spaces, students had to drive around campus for an hour searching for a parking space. Now that time has been cut to 60 minutes. Turner Street was also made one way in the direc- tion from Broad Street to Vernon Street. Students have nothing but praise for this new regulation because it makes driving on the hill more convenient than ever. Faculty members have, as always, entered into the plan with a spirit of cheerful cooperation, although the number of their alloted spaces has been reduced and the locations are less convenient. And, there is no truth to the rumor that the green Buick parked on the Chapel porch belongs to Dr. Jones. Computer System Added LaGrange College has acquired a new $150,000 computer system for teaching computer-related courses and expanding classroom instruction. Dr. Kenneth Cooper, professor of chemistry and director of the computor program, and Dr. Zachery Taylor, head of the business administration and economics department, program the computer for new courses to be taught in the fields of business, science and mathematics. Here, Bill Funderburk works a math problem out with the help of the computer system. New Mattresses Installed Hawkes, the oldest dormitory and the second oldest building on campus, built in 1910, had new mattresses installed fall quarter for the first time in nearly twenty years. Mrs. Chaffin, who works in the business office, said that it had not been planned to replace the mat- tresses. She said a freshman resident in the dorm complained of back aches, a problem she had not had prior to coming to LC. One male student commenting on the replace- ment said that he was not surprised it took twenty years for the freshmen women to wear out the mat- tresses. We have too many virtuous women on this campus, he complained. If you are in a Hawiian mood, you may even see some Hula dancers. Suzette Glazier seems to express her opi- nion on all the excitement with a simple snarl .... just another one of the fascinating faces you will find in the LC cafeteria. 63 Hagood KIDNAPPED The latest news report is that members of Kappa Delta Sorority at LaGrange College have Kid- napped incoming President, Dr. Charles Hagood. Authorities said Hagood will be held to raise ramson money , which will go to the Crippled Children ' s Hospital in Richmond, Va. In the photograph, taken only minutes after the crime occurred, Dr. Hagood seems fit to be tied. Bett Johnson apparently disagrees with the views stated in that newspaper she is reading. Subscribe, now, to the all-new LaFayette Ledger and have satisfaction guarenteed! New SYSTEM Succeeds A new System of Registration has been in- troduced at LC and has proven to be much faster. Now, instead of three or four long lines to stand in, you only have to wait in about six or seven shorter lines. Students did seem to enjoy the freedom the new system provided. Just be careful someone doesn ' t step on you while making a mad dash to reach the English table! In our last interview with Miss LaGrange College , Lisa Lamb, we found her bubbling over with excite- ment over her newly announced title. Lisa has been an outstanding personality on our campus for the last four years. Her college activities and honors are too numerous to list. No, it ' s not Halloween, and these LaGrange College students are not dressed up to go Trick-or- Treating. And now, from the Movie Critic ' s Corner, comes a tribute to a classic: Silent Movie 65 SUNBATHING 101 Coeds are practicing soaking up the sun in select spots around campus Spring Quarter. When the sun comes out, so do the beach towels, suntan lotion and a few bits of lively gossip. For these reasons, LC will offer a new introductory course this Spring, Sunbathing 101. The fine arts of this sport will be explained, as well as field trips to the backwaters , and hours of lab work are included. Painful Experience? Alpha Tau Theta sponsored the last local blood drive at LaGrange College. They managed to reach the exact goal that was set. SGA Officers Elected Despite popular rumors that LaGrange College is a suitcase or weekday college, we have reason to believe otherwise. One reason to doubt this rumor is the number of cars seen parked on the Hill during weekends. If you have ever stayed on the weekend you already know how difficult it is to find a parking place on Saturday and Sunday. The ever-increasing number of empty beer cans, liquor bottles, smashed cups, and cigarette butts found littered around cam- pus is also an existing sign of some night life. Now, the question should be asked, Why do so many (or so few students) stay on weekends? Perhaps it ' s the freedom so many find in cruising McDonalds, seeing the latest movie (which usually is about four months late), making nightly visits to Piz- za Villa , or any other of the joys available to today ' s college student. For those who don ' t stay, whatever the reason, we hope they will soon pack away those suitcases, and learn to enjoy the quiet beauty of LC— even on the weekends. YEAR IN REVIEW All years develop personalities of their own and the school year 1977-78 will be remembered as a time of bold beginnings and startling surprises — not all of them pleasent. There was terror in the streets of Los Angeles as the Hillside Strangler struck again and again. In Columbus, Ga. the Stocking Strangler was to kill seven elderly women. Star Wars had the force to become the biggest box office movie with its irresistible cast of humans and humanoids. The most engaging movie star turn- ed out to be a stubby tin can called Artoo Detoo. Close Encounters followed close behind Star Wars in its impact on audiences. The new cruise missle soared above the earthbound leaders and problems. The U.S. gave up a big ditch and said no to the neutron bomb. The Miners and Farmers were to strike, threaten- ing to upset the economy. Terrorism was to rampage across the world. Aldo Moro was but one of the many victims. The Mid-East came one step closer to peace through the efforts of Israel ' s Menachem Begin and Egypt ' s Anwar Sadat. All the year long the weather was too much. Bliz- zards threatened to engulf the North, and New Orleans was flooded. Man-Made catastrophes claimed a heavy toll. In West Virginia, 51 men fell to their death when the top layer of the cooling tower they were building gave way and the workers ' scaffolding peeled off. Women marched forward, both together and alone. The National Women ' s Conference in Houston whipped up flag waving excitement. In Annie Hall, Diane Deaton was a lovable commedienne; and in Looking for Mr. Goodbar she played a sexual drifter. Swimsuited Cheryl Tiegs became the world ' s highest paid model. It was a year of old and new faces, of hellos and good-byes. Jockey Steve Cauthen rode to fame. The matchless Pele played his farewell soccer game. With the homerun heroics of Reggie Jackson, the Yankees beat the Dodgers in the World Series. The Orange Crush was crushed by the Cowboys in the Superbowl. Leon Sprinks beat AN only to have his ti- tle taken away. The fighting Irish of Notre Dame were the disputed best in college football and the Wildcats of Kentucky in basketball. Elvis, Bing Crosby, and Hubert Humphrey all died and millions mourned. And in the world of music, the Bee Gees became the hottest group ever with their successful Satur- day Night Fever.
