Following training at the United States Naval Submarine School, New London, CT he reported to USS DIODON ISS-3491 in San Diego for duty as Supply and Weapons Officer. He next studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic 'Institution under the Navy's Burke Scholarship Program. Captain Cohen received a joint Ocean Engineering Degree and Master of Scienceiin Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture from MIT. S Following Nuclear Power Training- Capt. Kubovchjk, Jr. was born 19 July 1941 in Lakewood, OH, the son of Mary E. and John F. Kubovchik, Sr. He enlisted in the Navy in November 1963 and attended Enlisted Nuclear Power Training and Submarine School prior to reporting to USS JAMES MADISON ISSBN 6271 in December 1965. Selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program in 1967, he attended Vanderbilt University from September 1967 until graduation and commissioning in January 1971. After receiving his commission he was assigned to the USS HALFBEAK ISS-3521 until reporting to Submarine Officers School in July 1971. Upon completion of training in December 1971 he served as Cornmtmication and Sonar Oflicer on the USS ANDREW JACKSON ISSBN 6191 until February 1976. He was then assigned as Officer-in-Charge Personnel Training and Evaluation Program Detachment, New London, CT until December 1977. Upon completion of Navigator School in March 1978 he reported to USS WILL ROGERS KSSBN 6591 where he served as Navigator, Operations Officer and Senior Watch Officer until June 1981, when he was ordered to report as Assistant Representative to the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet to the Royal Navy in Northwood, England. In August 1984, he assumed duties as the Head of the Strategic Submarine Current Operations Branch of the staff Commander-in-Chief Atlantic Command: From October 1987 to October 1989 he commanded the Readiness Training Facility, Dam Neck, VA. He assumed his current duties as Executive Officer USS L. Y. SPEAR IAS 361 on 27 October 1989. Commander Kubovchik's awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, t.he Navy Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle E Ribbon with two E's, good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Sea Service Ribbon with bronze star and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon with two bronze stars. Commander Kubovchik is married to Mary Hillenbrand of Cleveland, OH. They have one son, Michael, a student at Old Dominion University.
