The bewildered and somewhat frightened freshmen, the eager sophomores, the confident juniors, and the proud but somewhat sad faces of the seniors flood the mighty halls of L. G. PINKSTON to uphold and respect the loyalty of our alma mater. The faces of Pinkston are many and varied, but they reflect you, the student body. Yes- terday a happy face, today saddened, tomorrow a tearful but eager face meets the world with meek anticipations. These are the young years, the fruitful years when time means only the day after tomorrow. These are the years of wistful-eyed beings with tender dreams, but youth is brutal as well as tender, and youth is reality as well as a dream. A flower blooms and fades and blows away--and blooms again, according to the season: and in like manner youth exists from spring to spring, for to everything there is a time. It is our hope that this first edition of THE VIKING will portray our school accurately. If you can identify with activities and persons herein included, then our work has been to good avail. Let us hope that this is only the first of a long series of portrayals of a fine, American high school. The Annual Staff THE ALMA MATER Dear Pinkston High, our hearts to thee we bringg Our voices raise, thy praise we sing. Our Pinkston High, long may your colors fly. We'll never yield on any field, dear Pinkston High. What-e'er we do, where-e'er we be We will keep our standards high for thee. Dear Pinkston High, to you we will be true. Our very best we pledge to thee, dear Pinkston High. Words 8a Music by Mr. Roy E, Hicks E DR. WARREN TRAVIS WHITE Superintendent Dallas Independent School District To the Seniors: May 5, 1967 Today you are receiving your 1967 Viking. This book will be treasured by you in the years to come as a pleasant reminder of your life in L. G. Pinkston High School. ' You have my best wishes now and in the years ahead. Sincerely yours, u V 5 Dedication It has been said that new approaches and procedures are constantly being tried. 'This we have attempted to do. Yet there are some eternal veritiesg so, in this, our first VIKING yearbook, we have endeavored to show the 'Spirit of the Norsemen' by the use of ideas as new as today. We sought to retain the enthusiasm of those bold, adv venturous men who set sail on uncharted seas. This experimental approach has led to broader interpretations of citizenship, attitudes, and ideals. As we began this adventure, each participant learned to pool resources - thus in our quest we settled on the course we would follow. This pictorial history presents our school family, with its aims, objectives and goals. Our efforts show that teachers and administrators are interested in individuals as well as the school and the total community. The welfare of the student body is the first Viking tenet. Others are: love of country, respect for others, and a constant search for knowledge. To these ideals of the true Viking Spirit we dedicate this Annual. . PINKSTON DR. L. G, PINKSTON Dcdimfivn of fha 17. 6 Pinksfon High Selma! 7 Kiagraphical Sketch fff Dr. Ummas Cvlberh PIi11CiPa1, L. G. PINKSTON HIGH SCHOOL Dr. Thomas Tolbert is a native of Dallas, Texas, where he attended public school and was graduated from the Booker T. Washington High School in 1928. He received the BA Degree from Samuel Huston College, Austin, Texas, in 1932. In 1947, he did graduate work at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and received the Master of Education De- gree from North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, in 1958. Dr. Tolbert has served as a teacher at the H. S. Thompson Elementary School, the Booker T. Washington High School, and as a teacher and senior counselor at the Lincoln High School. In 1955, he was appointed principal of the N, W. Harllee Elementary School and in 1956, was appointed as the first principal of the James Madison High School where he served until September, 1964, at which time he was appointed the first principal of the L. G. Pinkston High School. Dr. Tolbert is actively affiliated with many professional and civic organizations. Among these are: North Texas Teachers Association, The Texas State Teachers' Association, the National Educators Association, the School Administrators' Club, The Dallas Negro Chamber of Com- merce, the Moorland Branch YMCA, Free and Accepted Masons, Knights of Pythias, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, an honorary member of the Pylon Salesmanship Club of Dallas, an honorary citizen of Port Arthur, Texas, and he is a Protestant. During the years of 1942-1945, he served in the Army of the United States, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. Much of this time was spent in the African and European Theaters. He received the Bronze Star for outstanding contributions on the administrative level. Although Dr. Tolbert has distinguished himself in many areas of civic life, his administration as principal of the James Madison High School has been an outstanding endeavor. In 1963, The Croft Educational Services of New London, Connecticut, named Thomas Tolbert, Prin- cipal of James Madison HighSchool, Dallas, Texas, National Secondary Principal of the Year. The selection was made on the basis of nomination statements submitted by teachers of the various secondary schools of the nation. An honorary Doctor of Laws Degree was conferred upon Dr. Tolbert by Bishop College, Dallas, Texas, on May 26, 1964. Dr. Tolbert's school is always known to be a citadel of learning and culture because of the never-ending devotion and concern of this esteemed leader. . 1 E : Q! G. Pinkston High School was dedicated at 2:00 p.m. , Sunday afternoon, Nov- ember 15, 1964. This was a very historic occasion, first, because it marked the dedication of the first Senior High School in Dallas West, and, second, because the L. G. Pinkston High School is one of the most unique schools in the Southwest, in that it is a comprehensive high school offering opportunities for students to major in three areas of concentration: College Preparatory, Vocational Education and Industrial Education. I. Willard Gragg, Vice-President of the Board of Education of the Dallas Independent School district, delivered the dedication address. Others appearing on the program were: Dr. W. T. White, Superintendent of Schoolsg Mrs. L. G. Pinkston, Sr., widow of Dr. L. G. Pinkston, Sr. , for whom the school has been namedg Reverend I. B. Loud, and, the Golden Chimes Concert Choir of the L. G. Pinkston High School under the direction of Mr. Roy E. Hicks. Dr. Thomas Tolbert, Principal, presided over the entire proceedings. It was with a feeling of professional confidence that the assigned personnel assumed their responsibilities in a building which is unique in its facilities. Immediately upon the as- sumption of their professional duties, the staff resolved to rise to the fulfillment of its individual and collective potential by the development of a curriculum through the Four Year Educational Plan. The subject offerings at the L. G. Pinskton High School are broad because the mission of this school is to help prepare students for adjustment and usefulness in our changing society. As patriotic citizens of the United States of America, thelstaff realizes that it is chal- lenged to fill its assignments with competence in order that the students will be pre- pared for the opportunities which are theirs, jVezfiemzl,4el1ieeere1e14f Sehelezrehzkf Pregmm 4 YEAR COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS L to R: Mr. R. High school is, in a sense, a springboard - from which one is vaulted into a more or less sophis- ticated world which is a far throw from the joys of adolescence. When, in future years, we might glance back through these pages and feel a bit of nostalgia, we who are seniors now will feel that our efforts will have been well worth it and we will treasure the smiles, frowns, embarrassments, and surprises bound between these two covers. Governor C. White, Editor THE ANNUAL STAFF After six weeks, Jimmy Graham, James Oby, Patricia Sockwell, James Stewart, Linda Coleman, Dymris Waters, Nancy Long, Concelia Burrell, Gene Wilson, Governor White, Janice Winston, Dorothy Anderson, Odell Gray, Charles Walton, Mary Brooks, Linda Gibson, and Delois Whitehead realize that they have put the Annual to bed and they can get some much needed rest. Craftsmanship is precision . . . knowledge . . . dexterity - patience. But most of all, craftsmanship is pride in the job - pride that goes beyond pay or price or profit. Craftsnzanship is not a system that ran be installed by engineers. It is an indefinable element that is bred into the fabrie of an organization by inspired leadership and unending insistence upon producing only the finest. Craftsrnanship works through the rnind and the hand, but its genesis is in the heart. C OMPLIMENTS TO THE PRINCIPAL, FACULTY, AND STUDENT BODY OF THE L. G.
