From 1887 to 1987, approximately 4800 individuals have graduated from LHS. Many of these graduates have become distinguished alumni, achieving personal success in their chosen endeavors. The class of 1887 had 5 graduates; the class of 1987 had 83. The largest class in the last 100 years was the class of 1969 with 126 graduates. The last 59 graduating classes have attended classes in the present building, which underwent a major renovation in 1978. It is with great pride one can claim having graduated from L'Anse High School. Its history is rich with the dedication of excellent teachers and administrators and the ambition and spirit of its students. In this centennial year, we salute all LHS graduates! Stand for something was the theme for the first annual Michigan S.A.D.D. Conference held in Boyne Mountain, Michigan this year. The L'Anse Area Schools sent four representatives from the school's S.A.D.D. Chapter. The four learned leadership skills, fundraising ideas, and many other ideas that helped the S.A.D.D. Chapter credits an awareness that drinking and driving is America's- 1 teenage killer. On February 27,1987, the L'Anse S.A.D.D. Chapter received an award for having one of the best chapters in the Upper Peninsula at the Rewarding Leadership Conference held in Marquette, Michigan. The Chapter has been a success among the high school students and will grow in the next year when a junior high chapter is formed. They make a big difference and are really appreci- ated. A BIG THANKS! L'Anse sent 14 special band members from grades 7-12 to participate in the first annual Keweenaw's Finest” band concert held at MTU. Along with several hundred others from the Keweenaw, they had the only a few hours to prepare for the concert that evening. The pep band went along with the football team and the fans for the big play-off game at Newberry, bringing their spirit and tunes. 53 Vica Good Times The L'Anse VICA club had fine results again this year. Many students came in first in Marquette, most of them going on to state competition in Grand Rapids. For the industrial education side of the competition, Brent Schneider took third place in overall welding, and Craig Kent took third in T.I.G. welding. For air-cooled gas engines, John LaForest was second in the U.P., and Steve Haapala was third. Eric Bischof was first in the U.P. for his precision marching. This was the first year L'Anse sent a large number of students from the Art Dept, to compete in commercial art. We proudly claimed the first four places in the U.P. with Mickey Wirtz, Sharon Rogge, Linda Pirkola, and David Kunick doing the hon- ors. A number of students were also sent to state competition for foundry; again, the results were great. Darren Peterson was first in the State along with Tim Olsen — second and David Krenek — third. One such activity was the 1986 Fall Homecoming; another was the Christmas assembly. Santa Claus came to town and read letters that had been sent to him by LHS students and faculty. The Student Council supplied the funds for the cakes that were served at Parent's Night for football, girls' basketball, boys' basketball, band, volleyball, and cheerleading. At the end of the year, the Council was busy preparing the Senior Class Day Assembly. It was also occupied with holding class elections for the following year. The Council was busy throughout the year executing needed reform of council procedures. The Council began at the start of the year by setting its goals, and then it worked to enact them. The Council implemented Parliamentary Procedure in a manner that allowed organization within its meetings. At the end of the year, the Council was also in the process of revising the previous Student Council Constitution to provide for a larger council, to create a Junior High Council, and to revamp the outdated items. The LHS Student Council tried to the best of its ability to serve the interests of the students at L'Anse High School throughout the entire year. Student Leadership Forum The main objectives of Student Leadership Forum are to provide students with the opportunity to gain insights into their public education, to discuss educational issues with other students, and to develop leadership skills. It also enables students to communicate with their educators the concerns which they consider to be important issues in their school, community, and state. This past year SLF members took an active part in the district-wide forum held at Michigan Tech. Also, in the spring, the first Junior High Forum at LHS was held. As a result of this forum, a Jr. High Student Council will be established. This year the SLF organization has proven that students can play a vital role in their education. The theme Go Hawaiian made the week even more exciting. There were, or course, the tradi- tional days of the week to get us in the spirit. The various days were: Favorite T-shirt and Hat and Glasses Day; Backwards Insideout Day; Purple and White Day; Dress-up Day; and Ha- waiian Day. The halls were decorated with pine- apples and palm trees and so were the floats. The seniors took first place with their float; and the juniors took second. On Wednesday the seniors beat the juniors in powderpuff football, 28-6. The week ended with Friday's big pep session where we played many sprited games and were treated to some Run S.G.G. Later that night Jim Vos- kuhl and Tracy Haanpaa were crowned King and Queen and the Hornets, of course, beat the Lake Linden Lakes. 64 Christmas Time Shirley — Busy as a bee Tina tiny Christmas tree. This new building was, at the time, consid- ered the ultimate in school construc- tion. Since then it has seen some changes such as the new windows installed a few years ago. ----- 100 The L'Anse area's first school- house, when L'Anse was but a small village, was a three-story building brought from the Copper Country in 1858. It was not only a school but also served as a court- house and the justice office as well. Soon this small schoolhouse needed a replacement, and the citi- zens of L'Anse established the L'Anse High School in 1872. The new building was located on the brow of the hill above the present Sentinel office. In 1882 approximately $4,000 was appropriated to erect a new and suitable school building to alleviate the congested conditions that re- quired several grades of the first school to be housed in public buildings around the village. By the fall of 1882, eager pupils were able to enter what is now known as the old Gray High School Build- ing, located on the site of the pre- sent schools. When the spring term came to a close in 1906, the board of educa- tion was confronted with an over- On left is the Old Gray High School and next to it the Red School. crowded school once again. With $20,000 in bonds, a new high school was built, the Red High School. In the next few years the commu- nity saw a vast expansion of outly- ing schools such as the Herman, Foote, Aura, McKernan, and O'Toole schools. The newness of these schools had scarcely worn off when the consolidation began. In 1923 the Ford Motor Compa- ny came to town and L'Anse really became a boom town. Families came and once again the schools were unable to serve all. Plans were drawn up and the funds were provided for the pre- sent day junior-senior high school. Now the school serves all the out- lying areas of L'Anse. Its varied programs of instruction, plus social and cultural advantages, show its effort to serve its students well. From a class of 5 in 1887 to the 100th class of 83 members, the L'Anse Schools have faithfully served the youth of this area. Information from an unknown au- thor, written for the Diamond Jubi- lee. In the years to come, each class will follow the new-found tradition set by the Class of 1987; soon trees will line the front walk of L'Anse High School. You've come to the end of one path. And now it's time to explore New dreams and distant horizons. More challenges than before. i The road won't always be easy; It may get rocky and rough. But keep on going, don't turn back; In God you'll find strength enough. Always trust in Him for guidance And give nothing but your best. Then your journey throughout this life Will be by Him richly blessed. — Beth Stuckwisch 103 The Winds Of Fate One ship drives east and another drives west With the selfsame winds that blow. Tis the set of the sails And not the gales Which tells us the way to go. Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate. As we voyage along through life: Tis the set of a soul That decides its goal. My thanks to Joel Zimmer, Melissa Wood, Tana Zimmer, Kori Rogers, Brenda Leppala, Sharon Rogge, Ann Marie Marcotte, and Mary Mannikko for the time and talent they have given to the yearbook. I especially thank Mrs. Danner for her contin- ued support. This book would be nothing without the help of these people and the many others of the Yearbook Staff who gave their time. I would also like to thank the faculty and the student body of L'Anse High for their cooperation. I strongly hope that this book has captured the happy and sad times of the school year 1986-1987 in the best way possible. Thank you all Lynne Shetron Editor-in-Chief Don't bug me! Hello there!!!
