Philosophies Stories of Old Days Reprimands Love and Marriage 1 It is with great pleasure that we dedicate the 1985-1986 yearbook to Mr. David Goulet. Mr. Goulet has taught at L’Anse High School for 36 years. During this time he has taught Chemistry, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Physics. He has been a favorite teacher of everyone — filling his courses not only with required subject matter, but also with humor, philosophy, and “sure- fire methods.” We will certainly miss him and will always have fond memories of his classes. We wish him a very happy, enjoyable retirement, and we know with certainty that with his retirement comes the end of an era at LHS. 4 In Memory Of Craig Anderson (1968-1984) Craig Anderson was our classmate and friend. We would like to dedicate this book in memory of that friendship. Today, we may not understand why he was taken from this life, but — maybe someday we will ... Sometime We’ll Understand Not now, but in the coming years, It may be in the better land, We'll read the meaning of our tears, And there, sometime, we’ll understand. We’ll catch the broken thread again, And finish what we here began; Heav’n will the mysteries explain, And then, ah, then, we’ll understand. We’ll know why clouds instead of sun Were over many a cherished plan; Why song has ceased when scarce begun; ‘Tis there, sometime, we’ll understand. Why what we long for most of all. Eludes so oft our eager hand; Why hopes are crushed and castles fall, Up there, sometime, we’ll understand. God knows the way. He holds the key, He guides us with unerring hand; Sometime with tearless eyes we'll see; Yes, there, up there, we'll understand. Then trust in God thro’ all the days; Fear not, for He doth hold thy hand; Though dark thy way, still sing and praise, Sometime, sometime, we’ll understand. Maxwell N. M a g e On September 16, 1985, voters in the L’Anse Area School District took to the polls for the third time to decide the fate of our school system. Our district needed voter approval of 15.5 mills (13.5 renewal and 2 additional). The voters had rejected the millage request two times during the summer (mid- June and late July). In August a group fo concerned community members and students formed the Kids ’R Us Committee, which diligently worked for passage of the millage. The committee made buttons and posters, telephoned all registered voters and urged them to go to the polls, and registered absentee voters. They had poll watchers at all the precincts and provided transportation to and from the polls. Dut to the hard work of these dedicated people and a far-sighted community, the millage request was approved! The Kids ’R Us Committee was disbanded after forming the L’Anse P.T.O. The P.T.O. was formed to open an avenue of communication for parents, teach- ers, and administrators. We, the students of L’Anse High School, would like to thank the Kids ’R Us Committee (chairmen were Kris Kahler, Carol Tembreull, Margo Jentoft, Lois Kemppainen, Ted Hartman, and Amy Hanshaw); Kathy Fiester (from the Michigan Department of Education); and Karen Anderson (L’Anse Area Schools Business Manager) for all the work they did to get support for the millage request. We would especially like to thank all of you who voted to support our education and thus, our futures! Thanks! Student Life Can you say ‘Physics Charts’?” Wake up Pat — the bell rang! Lisa Dudo was serenaded with a love song from the band’s gorgeous lead singer (all of the other girls in the gym were insanely jealous!). The next evening Free Fare put on a concert in Baraga which many L’Anse students attended. They sang current hits again, but this time left the stu- dents with a message of hope about Jesus Christ, the reason for their touring. Everyone had a great time and can’t wait for their return! “Shut up, up there!' Joseph Jennings, an ex-convict and drug addict, came to LHS to share some of his incredible experiences with the students and to warn them of the dangers of using alcohol and drugs. Everyone was extremely polite because he did not take kindly to any interruptions! He claims the “number one problem with kids today is that they don't shut up long enough to listen.” He, too, had an evening session and shared that his faith in God helped him to overcome his addictions. Mr. Simonsen was the new director and had a lot of good ideas for the band. They resurrected the old band uniforms and wore them all through marching season. The high school band attended a U.P.-wide marching festival at N.M.U. in the fall for the first time. The high school and the junior high bands went to the band festival competition in Baraga, and both did very well. This year a Band Boosters club was formed. It is an organization of band parents and community members who are generating suppport for the band and trying to raise funds for new uniforms. Thanks for your help! This year, the Band Director’s Award went to Mike Carmody and the John Philip Sousa Award went to Kathy Sidnam. Both are fine musicians and an asset to the band! Congratulations! Christmas Assembly This year, LHS went all out for Christmas! Under the talented direction of Mrs. Jacobson, the Art Dept, did a superb job of decorating the halls with cards, a fire- place, and even a tree! The Christmas spirit was every- where as students decorat- ed the halls. The Student Council planned a great Christmas Assembly for the student body, and even ar- ranged a visit from Jolly Old St. Nick! (Boy, do they have connections!). The new year (and Christmas vaca- tion) were awaited with great anticipation. “All I want for Christmas” Ann Marie “You better not pout Peeky got her wish Santa and Mrs. Clause Mr. Newland was a good boy. Teresa Santa's Helpers Winning With Style Jr. H i g h B o w L'Anse’s High School Bowl Team demonstrated winning style as they wrapped up the most suc- cessful year to date. They began by outsmarting Rapid River by a wide margin and then defeating Marquette, last year’s UP champs. But the team wasn’t finished — they went on to conquer Forest Park's bowl team before being beaten by Norway by only 5 points! It is expected that they will be doing equally well next year with three team mem- bers returning. It wasn’t easy working their way through the quarterfinals on up to the semifinals. These dedicated people practiced after school with trivia books, relying on individual discipline for the remainder of the study time. We congratulate you! This year brought a lot of changes to the Yearbook Staff! We had three editors instead of one, and the system seemed to work pretty well. Kathy was in charge of Advertising; Julie, of Photography; and Kristin, of Layout. We all had our separate staffs and the work was shared by all. It made it a lot easier to meet deadlines and a lot more fun! This year we got a new room. We decided we needed a permanent place of our own and asked if we could clean and use the old darkroom in the school’s basement. We didn’t know what we were in for! It was FULL of old junk, had no lights, was very dirty, and worst of all, had MANY spiders and cobwebs! But we worked hard and cleaned and painted and even- tually turned it into a nice, workable room! It is great to have a place of our own! We had a great year — learning a lot and having a lot of fun! All three of the staffs were great and deserve a lot of thanks for making this book possible! It really was a “WINNING YEAR”! 73 Winning Students Voice Of Democracy Essay Finalists BACK ROW L-R: Wayne Maki, Sue Cayanus; FRONT ROW L-R: LeRita Jestila, Julie Castilla, Beth Ann Tarvainen, Tim Seppanen. History Day Competitors LEFT-RIGHT: Patty Veker, Mike Duguay, Mr. John Ca- deau, Advisor. This year Mike Duguay and Patty Veker were the only students from L’Anse to compete in the district History Day con- test held at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. They placed first in the category “Senior Group Project” with their display on the Iron Range and Huron Bay Railroad entitled, “The Worthless $2,000,000 Railroad.” In the state com- petition at Detroit, they placed third out of seven groups and missed a chance to compete in Washington D.C. by one point! Both Patty and Mike have compet- ed in the competition for the past four years with Mr. Cadeau as their advisor. Keep up the good work! Senior-Faculty Basketball Game “Basketball Bill” “Tadd” Lee and George takin' a breather The Faculty showed us a few good moves ... This year saw another round of Student Fa- culty basketball games. The Faculty played against all grade levels and, surprisingly, did pretty well! But, our roving yearbook photogra- pher was able to snap only the Senior vs. Facul- ty contest. It was very interesting! The Seniors, being Seniors, were a little over-confident. They felt they had a definite advantage over their slightly older competitors. They were wrong! The faculty team was surprisingly spry and had a number of tricky moves that blew the Seniors away! The Seniors, being Seniors, however, would not admit defeat and claimed they gave” the game to the Faculty to boost their egos! At any rate, it was fun for participants and fans alike! Next year we hope to have more out to root on their teams! 75 Smile . . . He is an alumnus of LHS and a world champion luge competitor. He was very good, inspiring the students with words of advice, wisdom, and encouragement. Mr. Gou- let retired at the end of the year, so this was his last chance to “push us out into the BIG TIME. Miss Mary Harrington, a graduate of LHS and a former LHS teacher and counselor, received the Distinguishd Alumni Award — an award she richly deserved. Getting Ready ‘This is it!' One last picture The finishing touch ‘Only 5 more minutes?’ Do I look OK?' A last-minute prayer A Winning Class Moves On John I'm an ALUMNUS now!” 99 Congratulations Ed!” Nervous and excited, we marched in as students to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance.” It was hard to believe we were graduating. Those four years went by so fast! We had many great times and made many special friends. We will ALWAYS have special memories of our high school years. As diplomas were handed out, we reflected over the past four years. At LHS we got a good, solid education and are grateful to all of our teachers and administrators. We had a lot of fun — homecom- ing week, dances, the senior sub sale, our class trip to Great America, and the Senior Cruise party put on by our parents. We remembered football and basketball games and the prom and eating in the lunchroom. We remembered talking in the halls and writing in our memory books and trading pictures. We had many great times, but now our thoughts must be of the future. It will be exciting to see the changes and challenges of the next few years! As the band began “Fanfare and Recessional,” we stood in tears and silence, knowing that though we came in as stu- dents, we would leave as GRADUATES — ready to face a future of promise. Good luck to the CLASS OF 1986!! Sue reflects ... Friends Forever 100 We’re proud of you, Kevin!
