Considered by many teachers to be one of the most socially well-adjusted students from afar, Reto naturally agreed to a personal interview. What have you learned here? — I got a new feeling about the world and myself, and I learned that there are many different ways of doing the same things. What memory of our high school will you cherish most? — The smiles, and the way I was re- ceived by the students and teachers. I didn’t know how important smiles were until my first experiences in the USA, away from home. I found out that when you don’t really understand what’s going on in a different • culture, a smile can help a lot. 16 CLASS OF 1986 Deanna Everson Pat Gaffney Edwin Gransell Nicole Grawn Roddy Haanpaa Amy Hanshaw Angela Hemminger Jeff Hiltunen Meg Hiltunen Bob Hubbs Edwinna Hyde George Hyde Erik Jacobson Kristin Jacobson LeRita Jestila Lori Johnson Eric Jorgenson Lisa Kanniainen Diana Kaurala Lee Kauranen Melvin Kauranen Richie Kerttu Tom LaBerge Brian Lahti Creig Lambert Denise Lane Joe LaPlante Karen Larson Bob Lawson Ron Leaf Sara LeClaire Erick Makela Wayne Maki Tracey Merritt Kevin Mervar Don Mills Mary Nevala Jerry Newland Kathy Niemela Patti Pakkala Kevin Parker Mara Parkila 18 Top L-R: LeRita Jestila. To put it simply, debating is arguing constructively and destructively. (In a highly civilized manner, of course.) L’Anse had a four-man Varsity team this year — two affirmative, two negative. Given a certain topic, we construct cases and build arguments. Both require credible support achieved through hours of indepth research. Our topic this year was about the pressing problem of unemployment and whether or not the Federal government should provide the unemployed with jobs. In November we traveled to Gaylord and tied for first. Later we hao Districts and Regionals. In the end we used an at-large bid to qualify for State Finals. Although we did not place in Ann Arbor, we had a chance to see our downstate friends, listen to lots of interesting and bizarre cases, and (for me) buy a pair of shoes. A special thanks to Mrs. McGrady. our new coach. You pushed us to excel! Top L-R: Affirmative Ed Kaponen. Coach Ann McGrady. Negative Julie Castilla; Bottom L-R: Negative Andrea Castilla. In our first two rounds we defeated Bark River — Harris and Ishpeming with scores of 95-85 and 300-10 respectively. The third match saw us bow to Iron Mountain in a hard- fought game with a score of 125-160, a difference of one question. If only we hadn't hesitated to say, “X-ray!”, or Amy had multiplied two numbers correctly ... Team members include: Ed Koponen, Captain Amy Carr, Julie Castilla, Tim Seppanen, Alternate Mike Duguay, and Coach Bill Bennett. Since we WILL lose only one member to graduation, next year we will be a team with which to reckon. We Knew The Answer! This year heralded the first that L’Anse participated in Junior High Mind Bowl, held in Iron Mountain with UP- wide, double-elimination competition. Team members are: Suzette Marcotte, Linda McDonald, Nathan Owen, Cap- tain John Supanich, and Kristen Olsen. They earned a record of 1-2; Mr. Bennett claims: “Next year the story will be different. The Senior Class of 1985 put on credible, funny performances of The Girl That I Marry to groups ot students, parents and friends in the C.J. Sullivan gym on May 16. Beginning practice in early spring, the self-motivated cast of 22 met in fellow students' hemes to perfect the lighthearted comedy It was the first Senior class play since that of the class of 1982, so the enthusiasm and initiative of the class of 1985 will well be remembered. The plot centered on the five Milburn- daughters, four of whom were furiously determined to win the heart of the rich, eligible bachelor John Van Allen. But upon arriving at the Milburn’s, Van Allen and his secretary, Dave Gilbert, switched roles — unbeknownst to the sisters, whose brother is equally eager to be rid of one of them. Each sister portrayed a stereotype: jock, wild music lover, spoiled loud-mouth, fashion plate, and tomboy. Of course, unassuming Christine found herself with John in the end. But other matches were made as well. Even sweatsuit-inhabiting Abigail sweetened up for Biff, who reciprocated her sudden shower of compliments with a hug. bashfully mumbling, You're not looking too bad yourself.
