Boosting spirit at LHS and smiling even as the snow falls and the team loses is hard work! Not always a respected position, cheerleaders nevertheless represent a high school by wear- ing the Purple and White with dignity. Cheerleading in- volves hours of arduous practice and teamwork. The night performances can often be embarrass- ing (oops!) but they put their best foot forward. Varsity participated in the first annual Stereo 98 Cheerleading Competition at the Cop- per Country Mall. A pompom routine to “Eye of the Tiger” and mounts and cheers did not get the girls into the semi-finals but might have begun a tradition for L'Anse’s cheer- leaders of the future. Democracy in Its Purest Form The Student Government of L’Anse High School consists of representatives from 7th through 12th grades. Elected class presidents of the Junior High meet with upperclass presidents and 8 students, 2 from each class, elected specifically for the Student Council. This organization is called upon during homecoming week, parents night, and other school events to plan activities, buy flowers, or raise funds. The 1983 Student Council was a partial sponsor to the yearbook and Jr. High History Day State winners for their trip to Washington, D.C. The Student Council has a lot of potential for im- proving school operations and sponsoring truly beneficial activities for the students, but tradition may have to be forsaken in order to encourage such things to happen. 52 V.I.C.A. Workers and members were few but dedicated athletic teams and various clubs and organiza- tions were able to represent L'Anse throughout 1983. 55 8th Graders State Champs Five members of Mr. John Cadeau’s eighth grade history class participated in the National History Day Contest after competing on the regional and state levels. During competition in Detroit, Becky Baker placed first in the individual performance category with a presentation entitled, “Pequaming: Before Ford and After.” Joe Gabe, Steve LeClaire, and Sean Wirtz placed first in the group category. The title of their project was, ‘The Civil War — Turning Points in Weaponry. Ann Mannikko came in second in the state with a historical paper entitled, “The Erie Canal.” Becky, Joe, Steve, and Sean will be representing Michigan at the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C., June 16-18. The students worked diligently all year and put their best works on display for the May 11 showing. Below: Garfield done by Shelle Duffek. Right: Sylvester Stallone drawn by Bonny Poupore. Almost everybody was stoned at the nighttime concert according to Sheila M. Castilla, the Yearbook roving reporter. According to a different source, these fellows were very sincere young men who vowed to remain celibate while jamming for Jesus. Parody Page There was much oohing and ahhing by the female sex over the appearance of Freedom Jam, a Christian rock group from Disneyland, Florida. In their free time the members dress as their favorite Disneyland characters such as Pluto, Goofy, and one, a closet transvestite, dresses as Minnie Mouse. The Athletic Banquet was a pot luck dinner this year. Entertainment was provided by several talented athletes, Mavis Hulkonen was shrunk down to size and Julie Roth acted as arms and legs. Ron Marciel, MTU football coach, was the guest speaker. 65 Senior Dinner-Dance The Knights of Columbus hosted the Senior Class of 1983’s annual Dinner-Dance after much debate between the class officers and members. Served family-style, the meal was enjoyed by 50 plus Seniors who reserved seats in the club. The dance following, however, was not as popular. Some of those attending described the scene as a private party. Penny Pakkala became D.J. as the night wore on, to relieve Mr. Superior Sound, but the music ended early, much to the chagrin of Senior stragglers who stumbled in late. 66 Prom Couples; Up Where We Belong The 1983 Jr.-Sr. Prom was decorated in maroon and silver using a Roman theme.
