NOT PICTURED: Garry Tollefson. Nancy Supanich was the Girls' State Delegate from L.H.S. and sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. She spent 10 days at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant in June where the girls learned the workings of political offices and the responsibilities of citizenship. Boys' State Delegates were Vince Blair, Craig Hiltunen, Will Ruona, and Garry Tollefson. They were sponsored by the American Legion, the Laird PTO, the Lions Club, and the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Council respectively. In June the boys traveled by bus to Michigan State University in East Lansing to spend 10 days on campus. Upon arrival they were assigned to a “city” (separate from their friends) and learned that Boys State is modeled as nearly to the actual governmental structure of Michigan as possible. They learned the contention system of elec- tion to offices in cities and counties, as well as in the state. Each citizen (boy) was assigned to either the Nationalist or the Federalist Party, and the processes of nomination, campaigning, and voting began. Citizens were also encouraged to seek appointed positions. While the working hours were sometimes early (Flag Raising) and long, the boys were encouraged to join the many extra activities — Band and Glee Club, Talent Show, the Whirligig Newspaper, volleyball, football, track, basketball, and baseball. Some of our elected officials spoke to the boys in evening sessions, and the 1982 Boys’ State Session was highlighted by a march to the State Capitol by the 1100 delegates from Michigan and greeted by Governor Milliken. Junior Magazine Sales Junior Magazine Sales take place early in the school year. Money raised is used for the spring prom, which the Juniors sponsor, and for many projects when they become seniors. Top sellers this year were Curt Lindstrom and Karla Gipp, who sold 68 subscriptions each. Overall, the Juniors sold $8200 in subscriptions. Lippmann The past seven years at L'Ansc High School are years I will always remember. The staff and students of L’Anse High School have been outstanding. I cannot adequately express my appreciation for the cooperation 1 have received. L'Ansc High School is an ex- cellent school. The high quality of education throughout the years have enabled L'Ansc graduates to excel throughout their futures. 1 have always been impressed with the high regard the community has for education and the success of the graduates. I leave L'Ansc High School with a good feeling, knowing that the staff, students, and the entire community will continue the fine tradition that education has achieved throughout the years at L’Anse High School. Gerald D. Judge Marilyn and Jerry Judge The students and staff of L'Anse High School thank you, Mr. Judge for your many ef- forts and your time given us — it helped to make some of those school days less “painful;” some of them were even fun!
