The Hornet cagers ran up a record that was bettered only by a Hornet team of over a decade ago. The streak ran to 19-0 prior to the final regular season game at Westwood High, which broke the string of victories. 18 twen-T.C. They defeated both Hancock and Ontonagon to win the crown. The end of the season came when the Negaunee Miners beat L’Anse by a 67-60 score in the opening round of regional play. The honors earned in 1978-79 were numerous. The new Superior-Six Conference had three Hornets adorning the All-Confer- ence first team. They were Scott Lloyd, Bob Tollefson and Dan White. Earning All-Upper Peninsula honors: Lloyd and Tollefson, first team; and White, honorable mention. The Hornet team was tabbed “Team of the Year” and Coach Ed Sirard was deemed “Coach of the Year” by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters. Coach Sirard also earned special honor statewide as did both Lloyd and Tollefson. Although eight seniors are being lost to graduation this year, chances are the team of 1979-80 will be strong enough to post another winning season for LHS. 19 JUNIOR VARSITY: Sitting L to R: Steve Martinac, Sean Sullivan, Jeff Fish, and Pierre LaPlante. Four students were selected from each of the schools in the Upper Penninsula which participated. The all-Senior representatives of L’Anse were: Janet Jarvey, Debbie Nopola, Bruce Harju and Jeff Selinger with Jay Selden serving as alternate. The team, under the direction of Mr. Lou Owen, began practice early in the year. That practice finally paid off when the L’Anse team defeated North Dickinson by a score of 220-80 in opening round play. The quarter-final match pitted L’Anse against a relatively strong Republic-Michigamme team. Jeff Selinger pulled out the win by answering a question after the buzzer had already gone off. L’Anse was finally ousted in the semi-finals by a suprisingly bright Norway team. Mr. Owen was very pleased with the team’s performance and is looking forward to attending next year with a new line-up of participants. 76 DEBATE MEMBERS: Front Becky Shetron, Callie Cram and Nancy McPhillips. Back: Jackie Conley, Coach Dean Weiger and Martin Tousig- nant. The Debate team was a mixture of experience and young talent this year. Three newcomers to the team helped L'Anse place a very close third in their division, although they were denied a trip downstate by Newberry and a very strong first place Negaunee team. However, in varsity competition, Becky Shetron was awarded a second place speaker’s award. Both Shetron and Nancy McPhillips earned varsity awards for their second and third years respectively in varsity debate. Mrs. DeMilio stayed on as the forensics coach to help guide her four-year protegee, Monica Sullivan, to another successful season in the category of Radio News”. Talented first-year participants on the team help assure L’Anse a strong forensics program in the future. Members of the Forensic team pictured above are: Lisa Sirard, Monica Sullivan, Martin Tousignant and Becky Boston. 77 'pcitune 0ftya4ne na6ene 4 ttenica MEMBERS: Row I L to R: Advisor-Brenda Ballor, G. Those attending Boys’ State were Dan White, Mike Bourdo and Don Holso. The Girls’ State representative was Monica Sullivan. These individuals were honored at the annual banquet which was held at the American Legion in mid-November. Those boys attending the 1979 program are pictured also. Bob Selden and Tim McKindles are the rcsprescntatives and Alan Tai- palus and Mark Elmblad are the alternates. 91 Pkuk, (?64H4Hlttee The 1979 Prom Committee under the direction of Mr. John Bruno, started out with a whopping 52 members, but as is always the case, the number dwindled to about fifteen very loyal and hard working individuals. These dedicated people put a lot of effort into the task of putting on the prom. One of the first things the committee did was elect Co-chairpersons. They were Callie Cram and Bob Selden. The decision was also made to hold the prom in the high school gymnasium. Some people were against this, but some thought it was a good idea 92 It turned out to be a great idea. The 1979 Junior-Senior Prom was one of the best in LHS history-so it has been said. Congratu- lations to all of the loyal committee members on a job well done. 93 The 1979 Junior-Senior Prom was held on May 19 in the L’Anse High School gym. The Romantype decorations were done by the Class of 1980. As each couple entered, they were given a glass and a scroll as a memento of the evening. When walking into the prom area, they were greeted by Roman pillars and a classical fountain. Each table was lit by a single candle. Refreshments were served by sophomores: Thresa Barr, Kris Flaa, Susan Koski, Ed Clements, Rob Kraft, and Rob McKindles as “New Breed” from Iron Mountain played for dancing and listening enjoyment. Midway through the occasion, the Queen and King were crowned. Congratulations to Monica Sullivan and Mike Bourdo. 94 97? flcCKi l - Se U l 96 97 The annual Class Day was held in the high school gym on May 31. Many Seniors participated in the festivity. Reading the Class History were Monica Sullivan, Pauline Knapp, Jerry Cangemi and Debbie Nopola. The Class Will was presented by Lois Brink- man, Scott Lloyd, Pam Supanich, Libby Clements, Julie Gipp and Donna Eliason. Prophecy speakers were Bob Tollefson, Kevin Sikkila, Shelley Tossava, Mike Bourdo and Craig Jestila. Master of Ceremonies was Steve Foucault, President of the class. A spe- cial solo was sung by Monica Sullivan and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was sung by Sullivan, Shelley Tossava, Janet Jarvey and Don Holso. The highlight of the ceremony was a mime by Shelly Jestila, Mary Jane LaBerge and Tanya Rajala. 98 99 100 979 (£a4H4HeKce tte tt Commencement, on June 3, 1979 was a typically stirring occasion. Speaker for the occasion was Paul Kotila, a L’Anse native and twenty-seven year veteran of the educational system. The addresses of valedictorian-Julie Gipp, and salutatorian—Don Holso were followed by the L.H.S. band’s version of “Rocky.” “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Someday Soon” were sung by the Honors Choir. The play was put on twice. The afternoon performance, had a few “goof-ups,” but the evening performance went as “smooth as silk.” Special thanks go to the stage crews, prompters, publicity help, and others who helped make the play a success. 108 tyiandad Step Occt '' 109 4 no Ill Patude - Pu$ '? ££ The 1978-79 Powder-puff Football Game was once again dominated by the Senior class team. The Juniors looked as though they were going to be a big threat at first, capturing the first touchdown; but, alas, the Seniors proved to be a little more than the Juniors could handle. But, beware to the next years Juniors! Front: Dean Weiger-Advisor, Robynn Lambert, Amy Deschaine- Business Editor, Brenda Nopola, Vickie Jaeger and Mary Seid. The entire staff would like thank Mr. Weiger for serving as the yearbook advisor. It is a difficult task and he helped us through it (thanks to a marathon work bee which lasted until 3 A.M. on deadline day). Good luck to him in the future. 114 This is a picture of some of the faithful who kept their faith that a ’79 Envoy could be produced with the help of (despite?) a brand new advisor. He’s the funny-looking bald guy behind the podium. Some, like Pat Miller, are not pictured because they tem- porarily lost the ability to do eighteen different things at once. Some lost everything in the rush to graduate and the resulting confusion. One is not pictured because he is on his way back to his seat after receving a special award from his former advisor and myself. This book could never have been produced as successfully as you now see it without the help of this man-Donald Holso. It has been my sincere pleasure to work and grow with him this past year. We couldn’t have done it alone, however, and I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to all of the staff for helping in whatever way they could. I’d also like to thank the entire staff at LHS. The janitors, who put up with our odd hours and who we failed to picture in the book, deserve special thanks. Ray Gudegast, former yearbook advisor, also provid- ed invaluable assistance. The Professionals in Houghton probably put up with the most, however, and there’s no way 1 can repay Paul and Keith and their Staff. Finally, one last word of thanks to our advertisers and all the others too numerous to mention, without whose help none of this would have been possible. This may be the only year I spend at L’Anse High School as yearbook advisor, and it’s impossible to put all of my emotions into words. If I could, you’d probably get this page too wet to read, anyway. So let me just quickly say it’s been an experience I wouldn’t have missed for the world.
