The '76 Hornets celebrated the bicentennial by compiling an 8-1 record. Especially memorable were the 15-6 victory over Hancock and the 21-6 loss to Forest Park, both games being decided in the 4th quarter. Along with a fine record, the varsity could boast about its honor winning players. R. Tollefson, C. Summers, R. Kissel, R. Kemppainen, D. Kent, M. McDonald, R. Fedie, and S. Tollefson were named to the All-Conference Teams. S. Tollefson was selected as All-U.P. quarterback by the U.P. sportswriters and sportscasters, and M. McDonald was selected for the All-U.P. defensive team. Also earning honorable mention for All-U.P. were: D. Kent, R. Kissel, R. Kemppainen, S. Dillon, and R. Fedie. S. However, Coach Niemela noted that the sopho- more standouts will probably add the extra punch for the varsity next season. He also predicted that this year's freshmen will be much improved with a year's experience and he looks forward to a much better season in 1977. PowVi '76 . . . The Hornettes enjoyed a 17-3 season, were the Copper Country Con- ference Division II champs, won the district tournaments, but lost to Norway in the regional finals, 49-45. Senior guard Karen Marquardt was named to the first team All-Con- ference and All-U.P., she was also the team's high scorer with a 14.8 average. Coach Carol Seavoy was selected U.P. Class 'C' Coach of the Year. Also receiving post-season honors were Kay Lanctot, selected All- U.P. and Terri Flaa, second team All-Conference. Along with Mar- quardt, Lanctot, and Flaa, other graduating seniors include S. Bol- ton, Sh. Daust, A. McPhillips, P. Selden, and G. Stroube. The 1976 Varsity Hornets completed the basketball season with a fine 14-8 record. The team placed second in the Copper Country Conference Division II and boasted its second highest scorer as well. He was senior guard Steve Tollefson, who fired in 435 points in the regular season. This, added to his total from three previous varsity years, gave him a grand total of 1,174 career points, making him the third player in LHS history to top the 1,000 point plateau. Tollefson was also elected to the first team CCC and the All-U.P. team. Other grad- uating members were D. Martinac, who was elected to the second team CCC and given honorable mention for All-U.P., M. Anderson and M. McDonald. They will be missed but Coach Sirard has hopes that those return- ing, along with those moving up from the JV's will make the Hornets Number 1 in the 1977-78 campaign. 20 JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM MEMBERS: STANDING, L to R: Coach Jerry Bugni, S. The Hornet JV'S made it known throughout the area that the Varsity Hornets are going to be the team to beat in the 1977-78 season. They finished their year with an excellent 16-2 record, their losses being to Ewen-Trout Creek and Westwood. The team won the JV Tournament for the second year in a row by defeating Houghton in their opener and Ontonagon in the finals. If this year's freshman players stay strong, together with the upcoming Jr. High talent, there is little doubt about another JV Title being captured by LHS in the near future. 21 Junior f-fajk Sosk tbcM 8th GRADE: KNEELING, L. toR.: K. The 1976-77 Little Hornets proved with their unblemished records that they are going to be tough contenders in the next few years. The 7th and 8th grade teams boasted 6-0 and 8-0 records respectively. With the 8th graders moving up to junior varsity, LHS should expect another JV title next year. For their part, the 7th grade players look like a sure thing to win the Junior High Tournaments in their 1977-78 season. T. Johnson throws the ball up court. J. Brown and T. LHS had its first homecoming parade in nearly a decade and it snowed, of course. The band froze their fingers and thought about playing White Christmas” in October. The juniors won the float competition. Their float was titled Blast 'Em. The sophomores were second with Tear Them Up, the seniors third with Eat 'Em Up, Chris Sholander and Becky Clisch were crowned King and Queen. Neptune played at the dance, held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. There was a Hat Day, a Clown Day, a Dress Up Day, and a Slave Day. (Guess who bought Ann Edwards?) There was a bon fire (sort of), a tug of war (sort of) and a football game (definitely!). L'Anse beat Hancock, 15-6. Not bad. Not bad at all. 39 40 U Ucte t CjOtAiM cJlW k Winter Carnival was a big success this year. Monday was Cupid Day, Tuesday was Clown Day, Wednesday was Couples Day, and Thursday was dress up day. The girls raised money by sponsoring a dance, taking cookbook orders, and selling carnations on Valentine's Day. They sent three members to the state convention. Wanda Pietela earned a first place in the competition there. Their last activity was a spring membership drive, promising an even busier year come fall. Members of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America accomplished much this year. To raise money the VIC A club raffled off a CB radio and held an all day car wash which took place at the Industrial Education Building. They participated in the annual VICA competition which was held in Menominee and were instrumental in the construction of three picnic tables for the Otter Lake Campground facilities. He was lodged in Max Pepper's museum for temporary safekeeping while enroute to New York City. Professional thieves, jealous girlfriends, a bumbling sheriff, and more mummies, bodies, and walking wounded than one can count, all interrupted his travels and confused and delighted the audience. 85 Vote Students made the big decision between Ford and Carter in a mock election sponsored by stu- dents from the Government and Economics classes. Miss Higgins helped us make our choices by advertising the two major parties on her bulletin board. The whole process of voting, from registration to the actual balloting, was followed with careful detail. With one excep- tion, that is: LHS Voters re- elected President Ford. The whole event gave students an idea of how hard it is for voters to decide who should run our coun- try. 86 s Guifity (yv not- Gulfity ? The entire senior class had its day in court on April 28. Mock trials were conducted to instruct the students in the process of the law. In the morning session Amy Ross successfully defended Mike McDon- ald against a charge of Possession of an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle. A jury of his peers found Don Kent guilty of Assault upon the Person of Scott Dillon in the afternoon session. It was an amusing and informative day for the seniors. Repairs - Electric - Wiring and Fixtures Pfijickiti BQpjcbitiy J BlkdknJbcol Cowt Actcws L'Anse 142 AFTERWORD This was written late on a Thursday evening, one week after school ended. A number of very special people had just gone home after spending the first week of their vacations putting this yearbook to bed. I won't mention their names, but I want you to know about them. Many others also gave freely of their time earlier in the year but found it impossible to continue as spring approached. Their help was invaluable. Of the few people I will name, first is the Editor, Kathy Magnuson. A friend of mine used an expression which applies well to the tremendous amount of work she did, and to what she had to put up with. ,!It's been real. Real was never explained and had meaning only for those involved. Believe me, though, it was. Jim Penokie served as cameraman, darkroom technician, and whipping boy. For the first time, most of the pictures used were both taken and processed by the staff, mainly by Jim. Supposedly I helped, but as I said, mainly by Jim. He started from scratch, spent a lot of time, and did a fine job. There are others: Paul Kemppainen and The Professionals In Photography, Houghton. The advertisers, who cut the selling price of this yearbook in half. The teachers, administration, and staff, who allowed us to mess up schedules, interrupt classes, and add to the general confusion. Finally, you the reader, who supported the ENVOY this year. Thank you. Now turn the page, and take a candid look at some of folks who did all of the work and deserve all of the Advisor P.S.
