Sandburg wrote of Abraham Lincoln, A tree is best measured when it’s down. ” We remember Mr. Outinen as he was, A good and gentle man, A teacher interested in his students, A citizen concerned about his community, A man with principles, Which he followed in a quiet and honest way, A man, who, in the still moments When all things are truly measured, We miss. A time for us at last to see a life worthwhile for you and me. And with our love through tears and thorns we will endure as we pass surely through every storm. A time for us there’ll someday be a new world a world of shining hope for you and me. Baby Blue and Silver Tipped Carnation Yesterday is today's memory and tomorrow is today’s dream. 14 High school is the whirl of fall leaves swirling across a road at twilight. It's a gold-plated megaphone dangling from a dainty chain. It's buying all the latest fashions, then baby-sitting. It’s meeting friends, watching the winning touchdown and experiencing the thrill and sweat of a locker room, after the struggle. High school is cramming for an exam that you'd rather forget. It's a shiny bronze ring that catches the light and a charm bracelet with scattered memories. High school is growing up. and growing up is wishing you were young again. Suzanne Branciforte 16 Our school is complex, almost a living and breathing thing which draws its nourishment from its many individual parts. It blossoms into full view for nine months at a time, yet is never far from any of us no matter what the season of the year or of our lives. No person or group is more important than the others. To survive and to grow we must all learn to live and to work and even at times to play together. This section is a visual record, as is the rest of the book, of our experiences; sort of a family album for 1976. We hope you enjoy it. Our Administrators We see a lot of our new principal, Mr. ludge, and his assistant principal, Mr. Mattson. Sometimes we'd rather not. Mr. Olson, who is just finishing his career as superintendent, we usually see on special occasions. Mr. Willette, principal at Laird, we seldom see; but when we do - he’s smiling. Our school board we can’t see because nobody took their picture. For the record, however, they are: John Sikorsky, Roy Koski, James McPhillips, Donald Erickson, Ray Juntunen, James McMullin, and Norman McKindles, Jr. Our teachers come in various shapes, sizes, and departments. Some in more than one of each. There are the math and science teachers, for example, and their student teachers: U. LEFT: Mr. Niemela, Mr. Seid, Mr. Bugni, and Mr. Christensen. LOWER LEFT: Mr. Goulet commands attention, even if he can’t walk. RIGHT, T. TO B.: Mrs. Sorelle, Mr. Marth, and Mr. Bennett who was unable to get to the departmental meeting for a new picture. Math and Science Language and the Performing Arts We are encouraged to express ourselves as part of growing. To do it we need skills and tools. These we get from: Mr. Anderson, instrumental music: Mr. Bruno, vocal music; and the English Department. STANDING: Mrs. DeMilio and Mr. Jacoby (sitting) Mrs. Magnuson, Mrs. Palosaari, and Miss Utley. 20 The white haired gentleman stopped to discuss American Humor one day. He said he was ... an expert. The study of mankind, from the wisdom of the ancient Greeks to the questions of today; this is the basis of the social studies. The staff consists of Mr. Gudegast, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Owen, Mr. Raymond, and Miss Higgins. Miss Higgins also teaches Latin and that is where our camera caught her. Mr. Owen took his U.S. History class to a police exhibit at the Commercial National Bank. Phil Collins, Bob Vizina, and Pat Kemppainen ’•enjoying another joke in world history. The Proper Study of Man, Is Man. Building Skills for Tomorrow The future is unclear, but there will always be basic skills we will need whether we become homemakers, commercial artists, accountants, or gourmet chefs. Mrs. Rajala, Mrs. Deschaine, and Mr. Jentoft make up the business department. Mr. Eplett works to help us develop our talents in art. Visit the annual exhibit to see how well he succeeds. 22 Mrs. Vertanen is fourth from the left, surrounded by her seventh grade cooking class. Voc Ed — Building for Tomorrow L’Anse runs a comprehensive vocational education program. An integral part of that program is housed in the Harvey Hyde building. The teaching staff includes: Mr. Gauthier, Mr. Brinkman, Mr. Beuson (standing), and Mr. Bertagnoli. This year the classes built a storage facility next to Hyde building. A local mason taught them how to lay blocks. 23 Gerard Lanctot and Gerald Friisvall are shown working in the shop. I V I t f«u Some teachers have their own departments, some may not even teach but serve us in other ways. CLOCKWISE FROM U. L.: Mr. DesRochers is the Guidance Counselor. Ms. Phillippo referees in the Library. Mr. Sirard and Mrs. Seavoy teach gym and coach boys and girls athletics. Mr. Ashley and Mr. Cadeau work under the Johnson-O'Malley program. On Their Own, Helping Us Be on Ours Non-Teaching Staff One fine group you hear little about is the non-teaching employees. Yet without them the school could not function. Many are pictured here, all deserve our appreciation for their hard work. CLOCKWISE FROM U.L.: Some of the cooks are Mrs. Supanich, Mrs. Thoresen, and Ms. Jukkala. Miss Paquette runs the high school office. Mrs. Wallin does double time in two libraries. Shown in the midst of summer cleaning are the custodians Ron Nesselroad, Mr. Oswald Harju, Tim McIntyre, and Mr. Ferdinand Paquet. Lisa Turner and Jill Van Wagner are just two of the kitchen gals. Mrs. Elaine Rice (Jr.). 25 National Honor Qociety Baraga NHS president, Vern Miron, presents the L'Anse Excelsior Chapter plaque to president Debbie Lee. NHS Officers: K. Magnuson, reporter: K. Debaters Reach Qtate Finals The 1976 debate team was composed of students from both L'Anse and Baraga high schools. Miss Ambs from Baraga wass the coach. LHS team members were Laura Bourdo, Don Heikkila, Bonny Kinnunen, Anne McPhillips, Annette Oger, Bob Tarvainen, and Cecelia Wentela. The varsity team qualified for the state finals in Mount Pleasant. Dennis Richards (from Baraga), Laura Bourdo, Coach Ambs, Anne McPhillips, and Bob Tarvainen pose with one of the trophies they brought back. Miss Ambs is shown presenting another debate trophy to Mr. Judge. 28 L. TO R.: Allison McPhillips, Debbie Mills, Cindy Heikkinen, Laura Bourdo, Monica Sullivan, Kitty Veker, Ann Barthell, Bob Tarvainen, Anne McPhillips, Pam Miller, Yvonne Whitman. Monica qualified to compete in Radio News at the State Finals held in Ann Arbor. Forensic students received script L's at the annual awards assembly. Forensics Music Makers The concert band, under the direction of Mr. Anderson presented two concerts this year and performed at many other functions. This year they finally received recognition in the form of script L's” and pins for the many contributions they make to the school. The pep band helps keep school spirit going by playing at athletic events and pep sessions. Mr. Timpani himself, Joe McKindles, received the first annual John Philip Sousa Award. 30 Sk Shall We Sing? Our chorus also does a lot for the school. Under Mr. Bruno's direction, they also give two concerts a year. The chorus is another group who received school letters for their contributions to L'Anse High. Our seniors took time from their busy schedule to prepare a The Way We Were slide show for their classmates to present at Class Day and Commencement. Anne Sands received the first annual National School Choral award in L'Anse high school. Performing 32 Smile singers, you're supposed to be having fun. Are you sure everyone is playing the right notes?” All this pounding is giving me a headache. Something of a tradition in the junior high after the concert; get your picture taken outside on the steps. Chorus!? It takes me all day just to eat lunch!!! These are the members of the junior high chorus; strange - according to Mr. Bruno they're never this quiet at practices. 33 The Spirit Flies High Where oh where are our rivals tonight?” Sophomores win the tug-of-war. Pam and Tibor reign as Football Homecoming royalty. Farmer Brown’s Rockettes make their debut at L’Anse High. School Can Be Fun Is my hat on straight? asks Patty. Okay! Who stole Harry's kangaroo? Linda and Master share a smile on Slave Day. Being a bum is just a scream. Unfortunately, our pictures of Basketball Homecoming King and Queen. Harry Miron and Holly Stenson, did not turn out very well. We apologize. Pep Club 36 Varsity Club Senior Feasts On May 12th, the Lions Club honored the Senior boys and fathers with their annual Father-Son Banquet. Mr. Judge amused the guests with his sparkling wit and humor. The Baraga County Senior Girls' Tea was held on May 18th. Girls from Baraga and L’Anse High Schools attended with many of their mothers helping serve. This annual event is sponsored by the Baraga County Extension Service. 37 Hope Springs Eternal REAR, L. TO R.: Gary Nevela, Annette Oger, Harry Miron, John Saarinen, Clyde Elmblad, Laura Bourdo, Joe McKindles, Alan Salo, Beth Veker, Wanda Perry. FRONT: Holly Stenson, Char Holso, Anne Sands, Pauline Edwards, Barb Clements, and Mrs. Palosaari. The cast you know. The plot involved a group of overaged old folks in their own fictional kingdom, an undertaker with a deal for everybody (or every body), the conniving owner, a pretty nurse, and an indomitable social security agent. Well put together, it turned into quite a success. The old folks discuss the morning's activity, a butterfly chase. Meet Robert E. Lee Grant Sheridan Sherman, or Clyde. 38 Blanche Greever Sickman consults her medical dictionary. H. T. Buryin' Sam Scott finally gets a funeral contract from Max. Mrs. Palosaari puts the finishing touches on John’s moustache. Can the Social Security man and the County Nurse find true love and happiness? . . . Tune in next year and find out! May I offer Your Majesty a leisurely stroll around the rose garden? Dr. Maude Grimm . . . Need we say more? Theodore Lump does his thing . . . zzzzzzzz 39 Mr. James Dougovito and local veterans presented our annual November 11th Veteran’s Day program. Mr. Russ Charles and assistants, Mike Jokinen, Tom Ross, and Gary Nevala, made doves disappear and ribbons, cards, and bvd’s come from nowhere in one of the year's best assemblies. Phil Martel and Tiki did their thing on guitars and Mr. Dick Kroeckel did his, ragtime, on the piano. Mark Twain, alive and almost in person, delivered a monolog of humorous readings and sayings and later visited Mr. Jacoby’s classes. 40 Sponsored by Your Student Council The student council plays a larger role in school affairs than most students realize. Government is only one of its functions. It also is responsible for varied activities, including the Christmas program, and pays for the School Assembly programs we sometimes enjoy and sometimes suffer through. In the Christmas skit Santa and Mrs. Claus and elves rewarded teachers and students alike with the fruits of their labors. Liz and Mike Erickson played the Clauses, Chris Sholander and Bob Kissel the elves, and Mr. Owen and Gerard Lanctot themselves. Your 1975-76 student council included STANDING: Ginger Stroube, Denise Rice, Bob Kissel, Clyde Elmblad, Dean Tossava, Annette Oger, Tibor Lanczy, Beth Veker, and Sissy Mattson. SITTING DOWN ON THE JOB: Lisa Turner, Chris Sholander, Geza Lanczy, and Scott Lloyd. 41 Stairway to Heaven The Junior Class worked very hard to give the Seniors a fantastic prom. Deb Crawford, Anne Sands, Holly Stenson, Annette Oger, Karen Ross, Beth Veker, Rick Johnson, Mark Fuller, Joe McKindles, Harry Miron, Calvin Tollefson and Mike O’Neil were the Prom King and Queen Candidates. 42 Joe and Anne were the 1976 Jr.-Sr. Prom King and Queen. Let's Climb to the Stars The 1976 Prom was held in the Knights of Columbus Hall. Music was provided by Fore We'll Drive.” The Juniors presented each guest with a beverage mug for use at the celebration afterwards. 43 Excited Sophomores were permitted to serve the luncheon at the gala event. Awards — Recognition Earned This year a number of students received recognition for their achievements, some at special assemblies and others on different occasions. Winners of the Ralph Ellis and Ruth Supanich Reed Memorial Awards for excellence in athletics were Mark Fuller and Linda Johnson. Randy Rantanen was honored twice for heroism in the saving of human life while risking his own. Mr. Gauthier presented Rick Johnson with the Vocational Education award. He was the first to receive what will become an annual honor. Cece Wentela earned the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow certificate. 17 I ■ • Annually, the American Legion and L'Anse Lions Club each send a delegate from LHS to Wolverine Boys’ State in East Lansing. This year's nominees and alternates were, respectively; Tibor Lanczy and John Hill and Matt Elmblad and Jim Bertie. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a delegate to Girls' State at Ann Arbor. This year Donna Kuusisto was named as delegate and Yvonne Whitman as alternate. Mr. Dompier, representing the Community Schools programs, distributed bowling awards to Scott Lloyd, Don Holso, Harold Thoresen, Mike Lytikainen, and Cindy Heikkinen. Letters in the Fine Arts areas were presented for the first time, here to the Chorus. Distinction Achieved Honors Convocation Honors Convocation is always a night for proud parents and smiling children, except somebody forgot to tell that to Tim McKindles (seen marching in). The guest speaker was Mr. James Meteer from Alberta. Mr. Gipp, Mr. Willette, Mr, Mattson, and Mr. Judge presented the honor students with their certificates. Damon Talerico (not shown) and Laura Bourdo were the athletic scholars honored. Laura also received the Frank E. McKindles award for excellence in language. 46 Cece Wentela and Debbie Crawford earned the chorus and band scholar awards. Denise Rice was one of many sophomores to receive an honor certificate. Donna Kuusisto and others from the Junior class walk across the stage to receive their well deserved recognition. Carole Hutula introduced the nominees for the William Jarvey Memorial Plaque; Ginger Stroube, Pam Selden, Karen Marquardt, Donna Kuusisto, and Laura Bourdo. Laura Bourdo was named as the 1976 recipient of the Jarvey award. Senior Court Day The names are changed not to protect but to involve the seniors in their annual day in court. CLOCKWISE FROM U.L.: Defense counsel Laura Bourdo and David Rafferty listen closely to assess the evidence as prosecutor Cece Wentela confronts defendant Harry Miron. He was accused of larceny from Mike Golden's Tire Shop. A real Judge, the Hon. William Konstenius, listens, ready to aid when necessary. Court officials John Saarinen and Mike Erickson confer on the side. The results of the trial: Miron was found guilty of receiving stolen property. Oh yes. One final word from the bench, alcohol is a depressant. 48 Class Day — A Time for Us Class Day was a successful blend of the comic and serious, the laughter helping to ease the uncertainties felt as graduation nears. The class sang their class song and the senior chorus members auditioned their slide song performance. There was a talent show hosted by Eub Sullivan in native costume which guest starred Gary The Duke Nevela, Harry Swivel Hips Miron, and Beth Edith Ann Veker. The underclassmen received numerous gifts and the future was foretold, with doubtful accuracy. All in all it was a gala event maned only by one interruption for an emergency message to Mr. Judge, who quickly solved the problem. 49 THE PLATFORM L. to R.: C. Wentela, Valedictorian; Mr. Brennan, Speaker; Mr. Tembreull, School Board President; Mr. Judge, H. S. Principal; Pastor Flaa; Rev. Peters; P. Edwards, Salutatorian; A. Ross, 1st chair flute (???) You boys look pretty positive!!! Miss Higgins applies the finishing touch. Commencement Doesn’t the Honor Guard look interested?! I wonder why Eub looks so happy? Maybe it's because he is being followed by Cindy? Another day, another diploma. Anne is in a mild state of shock. Congratulations Debbie. Lining up for the firing squad?? 51 I'm a graduate and I WANT MY DIPLOMA!! You're not happy are you Holly? Do you want something Crawf? Who ya looking for Gary? Our President's last day in office. Little do we realize this was our last day together. 52 Look out world, here we come!!! Homettes Gain Statewide Renown FRONT TO BACK: Mrs. Seavoy, Coach, G. Jokinen, A. McPhillips, L. Johnson, R. McDonald, P. Miron, P. Selden, T. Flaa, K. Marquardt, G. Stroube, S. Bolton, S. Ahlsen, K. Lanctot, Diane Selinger, Manager. The L'Anse Hornettes had a wonderful season this past year. Under the competent coaching of Mrs. Seavoy, the girls practiced hard - and showed it. Not only did they defeat the heavily favored Gladiators to win the District Tournaments, they went on to become the Regional Champions. The team went downstate for quarter- final action, but met up against a tough Gladwin force that went on to take the State Championship. The girls represented their school in a fine style, and we congratulate them. 54 The JV's Already Know How to Sting The Hornettes J. V. Squad also had a good year. Team Members Were: STANDING: Diane Smith, Ann Barthell, Ann Edwards, Cheryl Tembreull, Monica Sullivan, Tammy Pirhonen, Tracy Emery, Becky Clish, Mary Mattson, and Lorena Brisson (mgr.). KNEELING: Mary Jane LaBerge, Linda Bemrose, Susie Daust, Rita Elmblad, Debbie Lloyd, Cindy Biekkola, Doris Cote, and Julie Gipp. Missing is Coach Mary Phillippo. Ann Edwards getting the tap. Doris Cote has possession. Basketball, with all of its opportunities for excellence, is a fascinating game. It has many aspects to be mastered . . . The jump ball . . . and the dribble (Cheryl Tembreull). The shot (Mary Jane LaBerge) . . . and the boards (Kay Lanctot). But most of all, basketball has its ups and downs. As in everything else, it is the player and the team that keeps on fighting, even when down, that is the real winner. 56 Cheerleaders — the Spirit of '76 BACK, LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Edwards, P. Tollefson, Elmblad, Miron, and Erickson received honorable mentions. In the Copper Country poll, Lanctot, Elmblad, and Miron were named to first teams, while both Tollefsons and Fuller were named to second teams. It's no credit to anyone to work too hard. 92 MONTGOMERY WARD O.R, AUTO SUPPLY CO.
