1970 was a great year for football in L'Anse. The Purple Hornets were generally regarded as the team to beat in the Copper Country Conference at the start of the season, but by the end of the season nobody had. Jeny Bugni, in his third year as coach, directed the Hornets to a 7-0-1 record and their first C.C. Conference championship since 1959 and their first undefeated season in Twenty-three years. But the biggest thrill was yet to come. A week after the season ended the U.P. sports writers met in Marquette and chose L'Anse as the best team in the Upper Peninsula and awarded the Hornets the coveted Barber Trophy. It was the first time a Copper Country team had won the trophy and only the thind time a class C school had won. Most of the Hornets and I'm sure most of their fans were a little suprised because a small town team had only a slim chance of getting the award. But the Hornets cer- tainly didn't feel it was a Gift . They were the best and that was that. They had worked hard and they knew it; they felt they deserved the trophy. They did.
