The Purple Hornets were generally regarded as the team to beat in the Copper Country Conference at the start of the season, but by the end of the season nobody had. Jeny Bugni, in his third year as coach, directed the Hornets to a 7-0-1 record and their first C.C. Conference championship since 1959 and their first undefeated season in Twenty-three years. But the biggest thrill was yet to come. A week after the season ended the U.P. sports writers met in Marquette and chose L'Anse as the best team in the Upper Peninsula and awarded the Hornets the coveted Barber Trophy. It was the first time a Copper Country team had won the trophy and only the thind time a class C school had won. Most of the Hornets and I'm sure most of their fans were a little suprised because a small town team had only a slim chance of getting the award. But the Hornets cer- tainly didn't feel it was a Gift . They were the best and that was that. They had worked hard and they knew it; they felt they deserved the trophy. They did. 1970 Football Players: Coaches-J. Bugni Assistant coach-A. Niemela-D. Michaelson-D. Collins-B. Teddy-D. Mannikko-J. LaPointe-R. Foy-B. Tem- bruell-G. Heikkinen-M. Bennett-S. Salli-D. Pennock - Manager The 1970-71 Junior Varsity Basketball Team demonstrated fine basketball ability by winning their first thirteen games. The team has hopes of winning the Junior varsity tournament and perhaps completing the season without a loss. One of the factors contributing to their successful season was the consistent balance scoring and team work. 25 Basketball is a popular sport in this area and for as long as anyone can remember L'Anse High School has had a team. Sometimes it's been more than just any team as you may remember in recent years, such as the state Class C Champion- ship team of 1965-66 and the undefeated Conference Championship team of 1966-67. The seniors on the 1970-71 team were freshmen the year after L'Anse won its last Conference title. Since this is their last year in school they would like to bring another one to L'Anse. With only one defeat in the first half of the sea- son the chances look promising; perhaps even another state championship is more than an impossible dream. OUR SENIORS: Manager-K. Penokie-D. The program began with the chorus performing Hallelujah, Amen and Jingle Bell Travelogue. Bobby Meyers and Eric Olsen read The Night Before Christmas to Gary Jordan's swinging beat. Finally, Santa Bruce appeared with his elves and Peggy and presented the teachers and friends with their Christmas presents. We all went home in the joyous Christmas Spirit. 40 AT THE GROCERY STORE THE SEEDS AT THE DENTIST THE HORROR HOUSE PANTOMIME PRODUCTION At the beginning of the school year a Drama Club was formed under the jurisdiction of the Commun- ity School Program. Students from L'Anse and Bar- aga participated, about fifteen in all. Mr. Richard Jedelle was director of the club. One production was held for the public, which consisted of a series of ten pantomimes. The pantomimes both humorous and serious were done very well. 41 DRIVER'S EDUCATION Master of ceremonies-Mr. T.
