Text from Pages 1 - 92 of the 1959 volume:

This book is designed to present an accurate account of the student life in L’Anse High School for the year 1958-1959. This is the first all-school yearbook to be published in L’Anse High School, and we, the Seniors of 1959 are very proud to have the opportunity to originate this book with the hopes that other classes to follow will carry on this tradition. The contents of this book are for your enjoyment and information; in fact, the book is You,’ for you and your support made it possible. It is hoped you will cherish it and the memories it holds. . . • the —2— m emoriam In memory of Charles Mattson, Class of 1955, Leif Jentoft, Class of 1957, and all other graduates of L’Anse High School who have passed away. Very few of us realize the many sources which, working together, are our total education; nor do we realize the time and energy each of these sources contributes towards our development. A delevolpment which takes place gradually, from day to day, from month to month, and from year to year, until we reach a climax, at which time we leave the security they have given us for twelve years. These sources are so varied it is difficult to cover them all. They range from the teacher, whose very life it is to instruct and enlighten; to the members of the Board of Education who suggest ideas for our welfare; the maintenance people, making possible a clean, attractive, warm building; the students, who are the purpose of the school; and last, but perhaps most important, the parents and interested citizens of our area. We are extremely fortunate in having these people who are concerned with edu- cating our young people. We are given a great opportunity to become well rounded individuals by the means of applying ourselves. Education is a treasure, and whether we take advantage of it, 6r noard it to ourselves, is up to us. To all these, then, the teachers. Boards of Education, maintenance people, students, and the people of this area—not only those of the present, but also of the past, who combined, make up the Spirit” of the School, we dedicate this. This should be first and foremost in our minds. In this advanced age, in which two entirely different codes of living prevail, our faith and devotion are going to play increasingly important parts in deciding which of these codes will survive. We may not see the importance of this now, but in the future we will become aware of the vital role our religion plays. Since ours is a public school, open to all, we have students of many faiths. This is an excellent example of tolerance, where, not just one or two, but several different groups of people, can work and play together on an equal basis, with no existing prejudice. On the next pages, we will picture the various groups to which the students belong, giving ample proof that L'Anse High School has seen us develop SPIRITUALLY. —to— yyjethodiAt 1st Row: P. Whenever there is a football game, track meet, or a basketball game in L'Anse, you will usually find a great number of people present. This holds true for the rest of the country, too. Sports are our national pastime and are enjoyed by spectator and partici- pant alike. Almost everyone shares an enthusiasm for athletics. The term sports,” in its true meaning, means more than participating in a game. It also means lessons in fair play and sportsmanship, which cannot be found in any textbook. These lessons can be learned in any sport, whether it be tennis or football, or even a game of cards. Sportsmanship also stands for the idea of a team game, which should always prevail, win or lose, not the individuals’ game. Yes, sports teach us many valuable lessons and that is the reason so many people turn to them, not only for pleasure, but for the rules of life brought forth by sports. In the past few years, we have had teams in L’Anse High School of which we can be justly proud. They have won and brought back to our school several trophies which praise and honor our school. We are indeed fortunate to belong to a school which can boast of champions. In the following pages, we will show you the teams we are proud of, and also show that L’Anse High School has seen us develop PHYSICALLY. —14— 1st Row: B. Biekkola, R. Moilanen, J. l.aFond, B. We had a very successful football season this year, completing the season with five wins and two losses. Our season started on August 30, at Munising, in a non-conference game. We were defeated in this game oy a score of 14 to 13. But we picked up our first victory the following Friday on the home field against Ontonagon, 21 to 12. The next game against Houghton was a very tight game. Both teams were scoreless in the first three quarters, with Houghton breaking away to score in the beginning of the fourth period. Bill Herrala ran the kickoff back 75 yards to score, and to tie the ball game. L'Anse scored on a brilliant pass play with only 32 seconds remaining in the game to win 12 to 6. At Lake Linden next week we defeated the Wiz Kids by a score of 19 to 13 in a game that saw the lead change hands several times. The following week we traveled to Crystal Falls and went down to defeat at the hands of the Trojans, 49to 25. Arch-rival Baraga was our next opponent, and at the final gun, the score was L'Anse 13, Baraga 6. October 10 was the date of the championship game with Hancock, the game began in L'Anse. The rain had come down steadily for two days before the game, but after splashing through calisthenics, the Hornets easily defeated the Bulldogs by the score 25 to 12. After being low man in the Keweenaw Bay rivalry, for several years, Baraga rose up and defeated the Hornets 65 to 48 and 68 to 61, and then proceeded to go on and win the conference championship. L'Anse was the spoiler this year, but next year we’ll be one of the top contenders for the championship. Playing junior varsity teams from throughout the Copper Country, they ve shown people that they re going to be tough as a varsity team in the next few years. The purpose of the B Team is to enable Freshmen and Sophomores, who would usually sit on the bench of a varsity squad, to see real-game action. Mr. Maule, the B team coach, gives his players the same rigorous training that they will be having when they try out for the varsity squad a year or two later. In—or out? Class C Regional Title, the Hornets competed with schools from all over the Peninsula in several meets. There were several dual meets in which L'Anse came out as the top scorer and also a quadrangle night meet in which Houghton, Baraga, and Ontonagon all competed with the Hornets, but L'Anse won again. At the Copper Country Invitational, Calumer defeated the Hornets by a very close score, but the Hornets again captured the U.P. Regional Class C title, and then placed third in the U.P. Finals. We have lost several outstanding trackmen due to graduation and eligibility, such as Stuart Delene, Joe Poisson, Pat Hosey, Clark Westman, Ed Stevens, Jim Newland, and Eero Taisto. It is hoped that the major and minor lettermen, along with the new members of the track team uphold the prowess of L.H.S. in Upper Peninsula thinclad competition. Copper Country District Track Trophy —21— AN EDUCATION. What is it? Webster’s Dictionary defines it thus: the sys- tematic training of the intellectual faculties.” Does this help you understand it? Prob- ably not, for education is intangible, something you can’t quite put your finger on. It is a combination of three factors: teaching, learning, and doing. The duty of teaching falls upon the shoulders of the adults around us, not only the teachers, but also our parents and others with whom we come in contact. It is their responsibility to see that we are educated properly. The next factor, learning depends on us—how much we are going to learn and about what we are going to learn. We should always take advantage of the opportunity to learn, especially while we are young. The third factor depends upon the first two. How well we have been taught, and how well we have learned, determines how well we will do things, whether we shall achieve great, mediocre, or minor success in our lives. The standard of excellence of both the faculty and curriculum at our school clearly point out that L'Anse High School has seen us develop INTELLECTUALLY. —22— Senior Class Advisors: Front: Miss Jacobson, Miss Higgins. In L Anse High, we have had a bountiful supply of activities to keep our students busy, amused, and entertained, so our Jack is by no means a dull boy. We have activities which teach us responsibility, such as band and chorus, sports, the school paper and annual, and various types of clubs. We also have our dances and parties, which provide a means of good wholesome fun. Because these activities help us develop a better personality and assist us in getting along with other people, L'Anse High School has seen us develop SOCIALLY. 12— -i .,,tnr. Olson. The Juniors gave a victory dance To honor both our towns; Our high scorer picked a girl, And they reigned as Miss Pep and Mr. Touchdown. Double double toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldrom bubble; Spirits all, we welcomed you To help us sample our witches brew. Into it went a part of all And came out as a Costume Ball; As Juniors we had passed away, And came to haunt you the Senior way. Hula hoops and Christmas balls and tinsel all aglow; A winter scene, a boy and girl, and trees all white with snow. A wishing well, some strings of lights. And gaiety was at its height. And then we had a victory dance. After the Houghton game, In honor of Cupid and the Hornets Who were on their way to fame. And teen-agers came from miles around. To dance on the day of St. Valentine. The profit which was quite alot, Went to the March of Dimes. r -'•«wne: Caro Elmb, —«5— PerSt eSMonS The Little People” Faces — Betsy Robillard, JoAnne Sands. You will naturally ask, Who are you, and where are you?” We are the graduates of 1959 of I. Anse High School, the largest class in the history of the school We have reached a great milestone in our lives, perhaps the most important one. for our next step will determine, to a great extent, what the remainder of our lives will be. W'e are considered mature, for the most part in these four fields: spiritual, physical, intellectual, and social. Sonae of us have matured in these areas to a greater degree than others. Many will need more time to develop these traits. Graduation is a time of mixed emotions; it is all the joys, sorrows, exciting events, and disappointments, we, as a class have experienced, sharing each of these precious moments as a large family. Some of us may say we are glad to graduate, to get out on our own; try our own wings so to speak. However, a part of us will always remain here, in this school where we have received a wonderful training, one of which we can be proud. We the Class of 1959, arc thankful to all of you who have helped us in our development. ROSEMARY ANDERSON Rosie” It is a quiet worker that succeeds.
