F ormei 0. A. KIRK. A graduate of Hillsdale College. L’Anse High School Football Coach, 1926-27, 1927-28. Coach Kirk, in the years 1926-28, with a group of inexperienced players, started football on its way toward a championship. E. F. STEFFEN. A graduate of Western State Teachers’ College. L’Anse High School Basketball Coach, 1926-27, 1927-28, 1928-29, 1929-30. The careful training and the teaching of the fundamentals given by Coach Steffen during the years 1926-1930 laid the foun- dation for future championship teams. I ppreciation Appreciation is expressed to the men and women of the Junior-Senior High School Faculty for their co-operation and assistance in making possible L’Anse High School Championship teams. To all the student body, both boys and girls whose sympathetic attitude has added much, is gratitude due.

HISTORY L’Anse High School has enjoyed an unique record in athletics for the year 1931. Beginning early, the basketball squad not only decisively defeated Hancock, the Class B Champions, but won the Championship of the Class C Tournament held at Houghton. At the Regional Tournament at Gladstone, the L’Anse team was the runner-up. No sooner was the court deserted than the wearers of the Purple and White donned track suits and won second place in the Class C Regional Meet at Houghton. At the In- vitational Meet sponsored by the Michigan “Tech”, a week later, the L’Anse athletes won the Copper Country Championship. Following this victory the L’Anse team en- tered the Upper Peninsula Relays-at Escanaba and won a cup in both the 440 and 880 relays. When the football call was made in the fall, it was found that graduation had claimed a number of regulars but their positions were ably filled from the substitutes of the previous season. For the first time in the history of the school, the L’Anse foot- ball team played for an entire season without being scored against by a Copper Country team. While their opponents were held scoreless, the L’Anse boys ran up sixty-eight points against their adversaries. This year has been a new era in the L’Anse High School Athletics. Three Copper Country Championships in one year is a record that all schools aspire to, but a goal which few attain. It has been the result of a “building up process” at L’Anse. Past years work has not always been productive in games won but the teams were being transformed from unskilled participants into experienced athletes — championship material. This year’s success has been the culmination of that work. Clean sports- manship has characterized the playing of the teams and has added much to their success.
