Medical Center, a massive facility of 2,603 beds where 140,000 persons are admitted annually as inpatients and nearly 1,000,000 people visit the hospital's various clinics each year? How does one feel to function as one of 6,500 individuals, with various technical, scientific medical, engineering and clerical skills, who are employed to operate the hospital? What kind of 7 WALK AWHILE experiencesdoes the typical County nursing student encounter as part of her training on the job and oft? The class of 1971 created this book in an attempt to answer some of these questions and to represent in some small way the lite ofthe student nurse as we have experienced it. So as you turn the pages ot this 1971 annual, slip otf your wingtips, canvas wedgies, buffalo hide sandles or patent pumps, it you will, and slip into our role, the life of a County nursing student, and . . . M Our School Celebrates a Birthday On Saturday, November 7, 1970, the Los Angeles County School of Nursing celebrated its 75th anniversary, marking 75 years the school has functioned in the training of registered nurses. Fac- ulty, students, alumni and members of the hospital administra- tion gathered together for the day to commemorate the Di- amond Jubilee. , Tours of the hospital and Muir Hall were conducted by student nurses. The library and various rooms in the student's residence featured displays and films. An afternoon program was planned for the day, highlighted by a series of short skits called This is Your Life, in which student nurses, garbed in uniforms of each era, portrayed the life of the student nurse from 1895- 197O. Miss Roberta Housel, a nursing instructor, was guest speaker. 4 lu 1 ' t. ,Mr L.. - . iii R , 5 -., I4 e , A V Open house Muir Hall Debbie Finstad D bb F stad A-V open house in library In the Hospital Some of the areas in which we gain knowledge through participation are: Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, Surgery and Medical Nursing and Team Leading. Prolonged pressure over bony prominence causes a lack of circulation which is the etiology of a pressure sore. Provide with assistive devices if helpful, eg trapeze, siderails up for safety and movement assistance. PT Position on side q 2 hrs. Provide with blow glove: instruct how to use and encourage coughing and deep breathing q hr. Encourage fluids Up in chair BID as ordered ROM-passive and active. Instruct how to do exercises and encourage to do Backcare at least BID with alcohol, silicone spray to buttocks as ordered Results I found the pt responded very well to instruction on exercises and coughing and deep breathing and carried out my suggestions with little encouragement. The pt. seemed to be less dependent on me when l provided articles of care near his bedside and encouraged him to function as much as he could on hid own. He, however, remained very demandingg perhaps I underestimated his helplessness. PT might be helpful in showing the pt ways in which he can carry out his ADL with his disability. Any problems urine qcontrol or abnormal lab workyl There's More to Life Than Care Plans. . The school of nursing sponsors a number of clubs and organizations which encompass various interests and talents. All students make up the school's Student Body and officers are elected each term to head the organization. Judicial Board, Professional Standards, Social Committee, Residence Board, By-Laws, Food Committee, Nominating Committee, Student Faculty, Finance Committee, and Student Council are various branches of the Student Body and are composed of members elected from each class. Membership to Philathians, an honor society which performs as a service club and sponsors the annual Recruitment Tea, is open to those persons who maintain a 3.2 GPA. Choir, Judo, Ceramics, Photography Club, Explorers, Rx Staff, Nurses' Chris- tian Fellowship, Newman Club, and SNAC are additional school clubs which make membership available to any students interested in becoming involved in these numerous extracurricular activities. On the following five pages are photographs of members of these organi- zations. 20 ! Q., M-..,.o' 6 1 25 Christmas County-Style Christmas time at County has always been traditionally a big event at the Nurs- ing School. The residents of each floor of Muir Hall participate in the decora- tion of their respective floor lobbies, competition becomes heavy to see who can come up with the most creative, original display. After the residents choose a theme, many hours and many talents are often invested to perfect a pleasing Christmas exhibit. Several days before Christmas vacation, Residence Board sponsors a Christmas party where prizes are awarded to the floor who, in the opinion of the judges, has done the finest job in decorating. The windows in the downstairs lobby are adorned with Christmas paint, the main lobby tree is decorated and refreshments are served to make the annual party a cheery event.
