MUIR She walked blithely down the hall and stood in line before the time clock to check in. As her hand pulled the card out of the rack, she' noticed a white slip of paper: Please see Mrs. Muir at 9 a. m., Wed- nesdayf' She thought of all the things she could possibly have done-or not done. Perhaps they found that piece' of gauze bandage on my table. I really meant to take it back. Maybe some one saw me come in iive minutes late last week. But no, I sneaked in the back way. I wonder now--did I return that classroom book? But surely Mrs. Muir wouldn't see me about that! Maybe someone found out I used a pillow case for a hot-water bottle cover. Did I chart that M. S.? Wednesday morning at last. She walked through the halls. Why was everyone looking at her? Did they know she had been requested to see the Superintendent of Nurses? The Nurses' Office. Mrs. Garard looked up- Do you want to see Mrs. Muir, or does she want to see you ? She wants to see me, finally came, through fear-parched lips. The inner Sanctum at last! The door opened and Mrs. Muir turned for a second to say something to an assistant. Would this never end? She tried to swallow, but the sides of her throat seemed to stick together. Her tongue was apparently glued to the roof of her mouth. Just then, too, she noticed that one cuff of her clean uniform was on backwards. And that spot of gravy on the black tie was quite visible. Do you suppose she can see the hole in the toe of my sock? That Tr. of Benzoin wouldn't come off my shoe. Why, oh why, didn't I sign for that late leave Saturday night? Only five minutes after nine? I hope she doesn't look at my cap. It is slightly soiled inside. Not much, but maybe she knows. Mrs. Muir speaking at last: Do you really want obstetrics for your advanced course ? RUTH MARTYN. Never be content with being at a standstill. Store up knowledge for future use, for nothing is wasted. Learn how tollike what comes to you and you will attract good things. When a situation gets .too bad and you can do something about it-do it! When you can't help 1t, comfort yourself with the thought that every- thing comes out ultimately for the best. There is scope for every tempera- ment in nursing, so never stay at anything at which you are bored. If you are.not happy after you have made every effort to learn all that your position has to offer, and if you feel that you are unable to learn any more or give value for the money you receive-leave that particular .line of nursmg and find something else. Begin at the bottom if need be, and learn something quite new. Make an adventure of your chosen field, and make every working hour full and valuable to yourself and others. Have a good time wherever you are and whatever you do. My final message to the' Class of 1934 is this: a I Have a good time on duty as well as oi and you will be good nurses, for you will be happy people, and happy healthy people cure sick people faster than medicine.
