D., the composite He Man we hear so much about. c Surely, surely, somewhere, if only in the realm of his masculine imagination there must be his correlative soul, the one plu-perfect dream girl! ! A girl with all the charms and traits so dear to masculine fancy. A girl who is sufficiently spiritual to appeal to his higher nature, and sufficiently human to appeal to the other 99.506 of him. A girl who is big enough to pretend to be little and helpless, wise enough not to mind being frivolous 'and foolish, and strong enough to ad- mit her weakness. A girl who has brains enough to forget that she is beautiful-ands beauty enough to make a man forget that she has brains. , Who will accept him as her Lothario, teacher, advisor, authority, even to outlining the political situation, but can manage to remember in her most demanding moment, her Pathology, Anatomy, and her Bacteriology to the extent that Lister and Listerine are not synonymous, her Geog- raphy of direction and curves, even that Rex Beach is neither a Gretna Green nor a summer resort. Who knows how to take a compliment gracefully without seeming to snap at it like a pom at a bon-bon. Who can say the soothing, sympathetic, understanding phrase, in- stead of the scintillating retort, and gives the gracious gesture instead of the brilliant overture at the psychological moment. Who has such a wide scope of interests and responsive enthusiasms that she is as colorful and mysterious as the eternal beckoning of the unread chapter of a compelling book, and is far too busy to be dated on a twenty minute request. Who has that poise born of calm self assurance that is true aristocracy of heritage with a total lack of self-consciousness that bespeaks breeding, and not the pose and effort of the social climber. Who, by her thorough and convincingly genuine appreciations, rec- ognizes at all times the dormant, latent greatness that is his permanently in his reveries of solitude. But even after this earnestly scientific quest, he inevitably awakens one day and finds he has committed the unbelievable impossible! Alas, he has bestowed that priceless and enviable degree, Master Research Sci- ence QMrs.J on some amusing little trick who cuddled and kidded him straight to the altar! Did he do it for the capable helpmate and home- maker, the splendid mental companion and comrade for whom he has been so faithfully and sometimes ruthlessly searching these intense years? Men may come and men may go, which they most often do, but the paragon men like to believe themselves seeking and the apparations they actually marry are just about as much alike as Peggy Hopkins Joyce and Sairy Gamp. The right composition of ruflles and flutters can cash out a man's joint bank account, break his heart,spoil his finest friendship, ex- pose his most cherished confidence, and feed him, rocks for biscuits, he'll love her just as long as she can paint him to himself as the great, all- encompassing He man, the amazing, the brilliant, and the all-seeing M.
