THE EDITOR. Three ix ff ,NNNVX I ' IN MEMORIAM EVELYN IRENE LANG October 5, 1915 January 28, 1933 I cannot say, and I will not say That she is dead-she is just away. With a cheery smile and a wave of her hand, She has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since she lingers there. And you-oh, you, who with the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return, Think of her, faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Hereg Think of her still the same, I sayg She is not dead-she is just away! JAMES VVHITCOMB RILEY. To the Attending Stai, Who so willingly give time and services to this institu- tion and the instruction of its nurses, We, the 1934 Class of the Los Angeles County General Hospital School of Nursing, respectfully dedi- cate this RX. Eight THE NEW HOSPITAL Chisel in hand, stood the Celestial sculptor 1 With his marble block before him, And his eyes lit up with a smile of joy, As an angel dream passed o'er him. He carved the dream on that shapeless hulk With many a sharp incision. With Heaven's own light the structure shone. It hadcaught the angel's vision. Far in the night, the lights shone out, The beacon glowed and gleamed. The Temple of Healing completed- The Carcassonne of our dreams. Arranged by INEZ LUCILE MILLER. Excavating begun dpril 1, 1927. Cornerstone laid December 7, 1930 by Mary Piclzford. First illuminated on the night of February 16, 1933. Opened December 12, 1933-fllaternity Ward. Surgery opened December 27, 1933. Dedication .fflpril 15, 1934. TO THE 1934 CLASS May you start on your career as a graduate nurse with the same enthusiasm, sincerity and courage you have shown during your course in nursing. H The girls added confidence from the election of their class officers: Mrs. Elizabeth H. Brown as Class Advisor, Miss Pauls as President, Miss Corns as Vice-President, Miss Wheeler as Secre- tary-Treasurer, and Miss Sweetland as Council Member, to lead them. The 1935 class hopes to have the same success as their Seniors, the Class of 1934. A RERA C. CONRAD, Class 1935. EDITH CORNS, Vic:-Prexident RUTH WHEELER, Secretary-Trzax. Sc . ww'-'Pl ' CLASS PRGPI-IECY OF 1954 FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1950 Madrid, Spain : I have time for only a note of today's experience since I must pack my things and get a good night's sleep before leaving tomorrow. This morning I was frightened at the sight of a mob of men clamoring at the doors of the Cabaret El Toro. Not wishing to miss a thing, I went as near as I dared-without appearing tooconspicuous. I thought I must be dreaming-but NO. There before me, on a gorgeous stage, were Dena Saxon and Reta Qualls doing the tango with none other than Dr. Wade and Dr. Silton. I went back stage to talk to the girls and to learn how and what they were doing in such work. Dena informed me it had been her life's ambition and that she had gained her graceful figure in train- ing. They are making huge salaries and are the most notorious dancers in Spain. JUNE.15, 16, 17 AND 18, 1950 Pardon my negligence in not writing of my travels the past four days. I was enroute home and was able to draw a deep breath. To summarize the events, I stopped ten hours in England and was entertained in the home of Dr. Mauer and his wife, Ruby Baird. Frieda Victor and her husband, Dr. Rand, Violet Huntington and her husband, Dr. Levitt, were guests for dinner while I was there. 9 I forgot to mention my trip through France. There I met Elsie Blair who is now Dr. Elsie Blair, having completed her medical course. She was returning from a short visit with her sister in Paris and we had a lovely visit on our journey to England. 'I visited Juanita Sabichi and Lula Roach in Argentina. They are Assistant Superintendents ofthe largest hospital in South America and I was pleased to see them for a few hours. THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 1950 , Los Angeles, California America! And how good it was to be in my own country again. After sixteen years I had accomplished my soul's desire-a trip around the world. Such a trip! Seeing my dear friends whom I had given up as lost for keeps. As I thought of each girl, I was even more proud that I' had been in that class of 1934. RoNDELET I wonder why The noisy, cold wind blows. I wonder why It dances about the sky And pushes the clouds awry. It calls and then my nose Must blush as does a rose. I wonder why? I MARY KENT. Having earned enough money for a trip fthe depression had come and goneb Blanche bought a ticket for a twelve-day jaunt around the world. Of course Blanche had a wonderful time. We know-because this is the record of each days experience as copied from her diary. MONDAY, JUNE 10, 1950 Aboard U. S. Air Liner Magellan Left Los Angeles this morning with a glorious farewell from Vivian Campbell who 1S now Superintendent of Nurses at the L. A. C. G. H., Maudie. Lowrance who is Supervisor of Surgery, and Janet Burson who is Supervisor of C. D. On board with me are three of my classmates, Mar- jorie Doyle, Mary DeKorte and Mary Hale. Marjorie and Mary DeKorte have been ardent workers in Public Health activities and are taking a va- cation now. Mary Hale, really Mrs. Robert Donham, is giving her hus- band a rest, as well as herself, while she visits her friend Martha Welker, a visiting nurse in Japan. TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 1950 Tokynoi, Japan We had luncheon with Martha today in her beautiful home here. We visited the marvelous hospital which she has helped to establish. She has a training school with live hundred Japanese girls. Her assistants are Mae and Fay Stivers, Bonnie and Faye Griffiths, and Myrtle Martin. I wish I could tell you of their wonderful work, but time limits me. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1950 Ifongkong, China I left the girls in Japan and thought I was fortunate to have seen so many of my dear old friends. Well! Imagine my surprise when I met Catherine Olson and her husband, Dr.. Buss, with their four little Busses. They were having dinner in the hotel and invited me to join them. Inci- dentally, Dr. Buss told me that Catherine had never learned to cook any- thing but stew while she had been in training. After dinner Dr. and Mrs. Riveria CRoberta Wulsteinj joined us. The two doctors are famous sur- geons in China. ' THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 1950 I The Alps in Switzerland One would not have known it was June, for I was high up in the Alps and OOoo! it was cold. This proved to be the most fascinating experience I have ever had, for always I have, wished to see these mountains. Pic- tures and stories of them do not do justice to their beauty. This morn- ing a party of twelve of us hiked twenty miles. Our guide was Michael Faiola and among the vacationists were Lillian Chapman and her hus- band, Edward Train, Martha Zwiebel, Hazel Richardson and Tommy Cur- tis. We had such fun talking over old times. These three girls are found- ers of the T. B. Sanitarium in Geneva. They have invited me to spend my remaining hours here with them. Never be content with being at a standstill. Store up knowledge for future use, for nothing is wasted. Learn how tollike what comes to you and you will attract good things. When a situation gets .too bad and you can do something about it-do it! When you can't help 1t, comfort yourself with the thought that every- thing comes out ultimately for the best. There is scope for every tempera- ment in nursing, so never stay at anything at which you are bored. If you are.not happy after you have made every effort to learn all that your position has to offer, and if you feel that you are unable to learn any more or give value for the money you receive-leave that particular .line of nursmg and find something else. Begin at the bottom if need be, and learn something quite new. Make an adventure of your chosen field, and make every working hour full and valuable to yourself and others. Have a good time wherever you are and whatever you do. My final message to the' Class of 1934 is this: a I Have a good time on duty as well as oi and you will be good nurses, for you will be happy people, and happy healthy people cure sick people faster than medicine. As her hand pulled the card out of the rack, she' noticed a white slip of paper: Please see Mrs. Muir at 9 a. m., Wed- nesdayf' She thought of all the things she could possibly have done-or not done. Perhaps they found that piece' of gauze bandage on my table. I really meant to take it back. Maybe some one saw me come in iive minutes late last week. But no, I sneaked in the back way. I wonder now--did I return that classroom book? But surely Mrs. Muir wouldn't see me about that! Maybe someone found out I used a pillow case for a hot-water bottle cover. Did I chart that M. S.? Mrs. Garard looked up- Do you want to see Mrs. Muir, or does she want to see you ? She wants to see me, finally came, through fear-parched lips. The inner Sanctum at last! The door opened and Mrs. Muir turned for a second to say something to an assistant. Would this never end? She tried to swallow, but the sides of her throat seemed to stick together. Her tongue was apparently glued to the roof of her mouth. Just then, too, she noticed that one cuff of her clean uniform was on backwards. And that spot of gravy on the black tie was quite visible. Do you suppose she can see the hole in the toe of my sock? That Tr. of Benzoin wouldn't come off my shoe. Why, oh why, didn't I sign for that late leave Saturday night? Only five minutes after nine? I hope she doesn't look at my cap. It is slightly soiled inside. Not much, but maybe she knows. Mrs. Muir speaking at last: Do you really want obstetrics for your advanced course ? RUTH MARTYN. QUIETA NON MOVERE If you would like to cure your cough, Then stay away from Semenov, Because it's people such as he Who ruin throats for you and me. Besides I haven't any doubt, He'll want to take your tonsils out, And should he once attain this goal May God have mercy on your soul. ' Thou shalt wear sensible street clothing inthe seasons. Thou shalt not wear long, heavy, trailing skirts. Thou shalt not wear improper corsets or tight belts. Thou shalt not wear high, spike heels. Thou shalt wear well selected shoes on and off duty, sufficiently longer than the foot, straight inner line, good heel, fitting loosely at the toe, and snugly at the heel. ' Thou shalt choose light weight leathers and ones that afford good ventilation, for, yea, verily, I speak unto ye, thou wilt have corns, calluses and like tortures on thy feet if thou heedeth me not. Thou shalt wear the complete school uniform while on duty. Thou shalt be neat and clean at all times. Thou shalt not wear round garters, nay nor shalt thou wear stock- ings with holes or unde-rclothing which is not easily washed. Verily, I speak unto ye, my students of Personal Higiene, and pray ye will heed and follow my advice through all the days of your life. MARY M. BUTLER. l You'd laugh to see me make my bed Now at the foot, now at the head. My brow quite puckered up with care The corners simply must be square. At all the Clinics which we see Miss Jones does it splendidlyg She pulls it here, and holds it there,- And then the corners come out square. And so I pull, and so I hold I tuck it here, andhere I fold, And know a joy beyond compare Whenever corners turn out square. Oh well, as fussy as it seems, You'd be surprised what precious dreams Are hidden in that very pair Of sheets, whose corners MUST be square. And when those dreams come true to me I'll think of all the Clinics, see- Remembering that it was where I learned to make the corners square. ANON. There are times when one does wonder- Edward Train told the patient's feminine visitor on Ward 155 that the patient was 'unable to sit up, and found he had been talking to the doctor. Ruby Baird found herself locked in the library at 8:30 one evening. The watchman was not chagrined but angry. Rose Futter and Frankie Fulp lost their purses at the beach and had to wait until a crowd of people boarded the car so they could squeeze in without paying fare home. A Tommy Curtis, then a probie, left the urine speimens from 500 in the Library, instead of the Lab. Nola Pickrell was locked in the bathroom for two hours, the evening she had a dinner invitation. The culprit was never captured. Hazel Richardson, as a Prep Student, icarefully Wrap-ped 500's daily allotment of enema and douche tips in separate gauze packages. Miss Booth declares there were 25 and that each bundle was tied with a blue ribbon. A A certain member of the January section dried the night's supply of Surgery's gloves by vacuuming them in the sterilizer, once too often. Eleanor Krentz, during the early probie days, was given a senior student's A ward report. The nice part was that the room-mate told everyone about it, and it was several days before the truth was known. A probie went to Surgery without the customary wheel chair or stretcher, 'determined that she could carry 500's daily supply of glucose and saline. They only used about 60 quarts of each, and those were the good old days of the coffee pot flasks. Rinalda Hanson found she was down to her last cent, and had to borrow a nickel from a cop for street car fare home. Someone vacuumed the vaseline gauze. - Juliano Montano offered Dr. W. D., the composite He Man we hear so much about. c Surely, surely, somewhere, if only in the realm of his masculine imagination there must be his correlative soul, the one plu-perfect dream girl! ! A girl with all the charms and traits so dear to masculine fancy. A girl who is sufficiently spiritual to appeal to his higher nature, and sufficiently human to appeal to the other 99.506 of him. A girl who is big enough to pretend to be little and helpless, wise enough not to mind being frivolous 'and foolish, and strong enough to ad- mit her weakness. A girl who has brains enough to forget that she is beautiful-ands beauty enough to make a man forget that she has brains. , Who will accept him as her Lothario, teacher, advisor, authority, even to outlining the political situation, but can manage to remember in her most demanding moment, her Pathology, Anatomy, and her Bacteriology to the extent that Lister and Listerine are not synonymous, her Geog- raphy of direction and curves, even that Rex Beach is neither a Gretna Green nor a summer resort. Who knows how to take a compliment gracefully without seeming to snap at it like a pom at a bon-bon. Who can say the soothing, sympathetic, understanding phrase, in- stead of the scintillating retort, and gives the gracious gesture instead of the brilliant overture at the psychological moment. Who has such a wide scope of interests and responsive enthusiasms that she is as colorful and mysterious as the eternal beckoning of the unread chapter of a compelling book, and is far too busy to be dated on a twenty minute request. Who has that poise born of calm self assurance that is true aristocracy of heritage with a total lack of self-consciousness that bespeaks breeding, and not the pose and effort of the social climber. Who, by her thorough and convincingly genuine appreciations, rec- ognizes at all times the dormant, latent greatness that is his permanently in his reveries of solitude. But even after this earnestly scientific quest, he inevitably awakens one day and finds he has committed the unbelievable impossible! Alas, he has bestowed that priceless and enviable degree, Master Research Sci- ence QMrs.J on some amusing little trick who cuddled and kidded him straight to the altar! Did he do it for the capable helpmate and home- maker, the splendid mental companion and comrade for whom he has been so faithfully and sometimes ruthlessly searching these intense years? Men may come and men may go, which they most often do, but the paragon men like to believe themselves seeking and the apparations they actually marry are just about as much alike as Peggy Hopkins Joyce and Sairy Gamp. The right composition of ruflles and flutters can cash out a man's joint bank account, break his heart, spoil his finest friendship, ex- pose his most cherished confidence, and feed him, rocks for biscuits, he'll love her just as long as she can paint him to himself as the great, all- encompassing He man, the amazing, the brilliant, and the all-seeing M.
