In reviewing the campus development of the period during which this class has been both an observer and a participant, one is convinced that there has been not merely growth, but an accelerated growth through each year of the time. Within the last four years nine new buildings have been opened for use by college students. These include: Deatrick Hall for men, the deFrancesco World Cultures Building, the Gruber-Knedler Planetarium, Johnson Hall for women, the new Dining Hall, the Mary E. Richenbach Research-Learning Cen- ter, the Rohrbach Library, and the Student Center. Currently, in addition to these, a field house and a fine arts building are under construction. Architects are also working on the planning and preplanning of ten additional buildings. Already Kutztown can be ranked among the large institutions of the Commonwealth. It is true that bricks and mortar do not guarantee the excellence of education, but they do indicate that Kutztown is dedicated to making significant progress toward meeting the physical needs of the masses of Pennsylvania high school graduates seeking a place in a good college, and at a cost they can afford. Early in 1968, the college was visited by an evaluating team representing the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and again, as in previous visitations, the college was accredited. New programs arc constantly in the process of development. Within the last four years the college conferred its first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The number of candidates completing the requirements for the Master’s degree increased from forty-three in 1965, to one hundred forty-four in 1968. Currently, new courses in accounting, social case work, and oceanography are being offered. As this class leaves the college, the future of this rapidly growing institution will be determined largely by the degree of excellence and responsibility its members show when serving their respective communities. The challenge to them is to bear evidence that their experiences in a growing college community can be translated into service toward a better society. Cyrus E. Beekey President January 29, 1969
