Prentiss, whose sudden death last summer bereaved colleagues and students alike, was in the fullest sense one of the pillars of Kutztown State College. A doctor of philosophy from Northwestern (1932) this staunch New Englander came to our campus in 1946 as Dean of Men, and five years later was appointed chairman of the Social Studies department. In 1962 he was the obvious choice to head the new liberal arts division, and in 1965 he was named Dean of Arts and Sciences by the late President deFrancesco. His energy, his wise counsel, and his constant warm concern for the good of his fellowmen were apparent to us all. Here truly was one worthy of Marc Antony’s words, His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, 'This was a man.' In reviewing the campus development of the period during which this class has been both an observer and a participant, one is convinced that there has been not merely growth, but an accelerated growth through each year of the time. Within the last four years nine new buildings have been opened for use by college students. These include: Deatrick Hall for men, the deFrancesco World Cultures Building, the Gruber-Knedler Planetarium, Johnson Hall for women, the new Dining Hall, the Mary E. Richenbach Research-Learning Cen- ter, the Rohrbach Library, and the Student Center. Currently, in addition to these, a field house and a fine arts building are under construction. Architects are also working on the planning and preplanning of ten additional buildings. Already Kutztown can be ranked among the large institutions of the Commonwealth. It is true that bricks and mortar do not guarantee the excellence of education, but they do indicate that Kutztown is dedicated to making significant progress toward meeting the physical needs of the masses of Pennsylvania high school graduates seeking a place in a good college, and at a cost they can afford. Early in 1968, the college was visited by an evaluating team representing the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and again, as in previous visitations, the college was accredited. New programs arc constantly in the process of development. Within the last four years the college conferred its first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The number of candidates completing the requirements for the Master’s degree increased from forty-three in 1965, to one hundred forty-four in 1968. Currently, new courses in accounting, social case work, and oceanography are being offered. As this class leaves the college, the future of this rapidly growing institution will be determined largely by the degree of excellence and responsibility its members show when serving their respective communities. The challenge to them is to bear evidence that their experiences in a growing college community can be translated into service toward a better society. Cyrus E. The continued development of a superior department of speech and drama should promote greater interest and activity in speech and drama — curricular as well as extra-curricular — in the high schools of eastern Pennsylvania, and meet an increased demand for teachers with this specialized training. Kutztown will probably follow trends already discernable in teacher- training throughout the United States. Among these might be mentioned: a greater flexibility in general education requirements, efforts to reduce irrele- vance and duplication in professional courses, greater use of research, simulation, and instructional media — such as closed-circuit television and video tape. Our new library will be a boon. Additional facilities — physical and human, coupled with anticipated greater local autonomy for the college will permit Kutztown to meet the educational challenges of modern society. 16 Dr. B. Henry Shafer Director Art Education Education of art teachers is a relative balance of visual and liberal arts. Since the art teacher is committed to the whole education of youth, the liberal arts experiences not only aid in establishing educational rapport with young people but also in developing a personal erudition necessary to aesthetic perception. Visual arts experiences, with equal emphasis on graphics and crafts, provide for the development of personal and educational aesthetic competence. The evolving curriculum is contextually related to this educational structure. Curriculum changes will continue to emphasize the inter-relation of aesthetic competencies rather than merely accumulate isolated courses in the visual arts. The liberal arts education will permit considerable elective latitude with a minimum of required courses. Students will have an increasingly vested •Wrest in determining their education within the context of the curriculum. Dr. Horace F. Heilman Director Fine Arts Education Fine arts curricula — painting, sculpture and advertising — were completely evaluated during the Spring of 1968. Major curriculum revisions were based on in- structional experiences by students and instructional staff. Development of aesthetic competencies are definitely sequentially interrelated, thereby eliminating segmented studio experiences. These significant revisions reflect the immediate future curricula in fine arts. Impending revisions in the liberal arts aspect of fine arts education forecasts a considerable student latitude in course selections. Students will be in a position to program liberal arts courses reflecting the particular purposes of their fine arts curriculum. 17 Elementary Education These are exciting and challenging times in which we live! The techno- logical advances, the scientific explorations, and the crises in our society and world call for a varied and different approach for the education of children. If our democratic society is to survive educators must help children think for themselves, make their decisions, evaluate themselves, develop positive attitudes, and develop concepts rather than a group of isolated and unrelated facts. A basic understanding of other people, as well as of themselves plus the skill and knowledge necessary in solving problems are important aspects in develop- ing world understanding. These are essential ingredients of any good elementary school curriculum. This is a time for review and innovations! The challenge is ours — students and educators must accept it! Dr. V. Ruth Traugcr Director Liberal Arts Education The Liberal Arts program will grow as Kutztown State College grows. The various major fields will increase in scope and number as the college develops curricula to meet the new demands of an on-going society. The Liberal Arts must both preserve tradition and absorb innovation. Above all, they must provide the cultural perspective that enables men and women to adjust their personal lives to their time in history. No matter how the means of the Liberal Arts program may vary from year to year, it will continue to move towards these ends. 18 Dr. Bennett Harris Director Library Education In order to meet the need of professionally trained school librarians for the schools of Pennsylvania, the Department of Public Instruction authorized Kutztown State College to inaugurate a Library Education program more than a half century ago. Since then much has happened in the field of education and school librarianship. Today’s training encompasses much more than formalized indoctrination. It has come to mean much more than merely learning library techniques. All the facets of teaching in our schools today are examined and the school library as an Instructional Materials Center is emphasized. The approach to School Librarianship at Kutztown State is along one of the following avenues: full-time majors interested in elementary or secondary school libraries, academic majors for elementary students, elementary endorse- ment for in-service elementary teachers, and since 1966, a Master of Education degree with a major in Library Education for certified school librarians. Dr. NichoLis G. Stevens Director Special Education The program in Special Education is divided into two fields, the area for specialization with the Visually Handicapped and the area of Mental Retardation. A complete curriculum is available in cither field of study leading to certification in that field as well as in the field of elementary education. Special Education students also belong to an international organization for exceptional children and participate in local, state and federal programs. There are over 100 students in the Special Education curriculum and it is continuing to increase both in the numbers as well as in the quality of students and courses. The Department of Special Education is enlarging its library holdings and materials, and students are given opportunities to visit facilities for the mentally retarded and visually handicapped in Reading and Philadelphia. In this way they combine theoretical with intensely practical knowledge, and become ready to respond to the continuing demand for qualified teachers in both areas of Special Education. 19 Mary E. The cornerstone of Johnson Hall was laid. There were fireworks at Homecoming! The lights went out in Old Main — remember the candlelight dinners? The commuters were the happy recipients of a new conveniently located parking lot (I). THE BASEBALL TEAM WON THE EASTERN DIVISION BASEBALL TITLE OF THE PSCC. Staging of a centennial pageant and the presentation of Beacon on the Hill marked the climax of the celebration of Kutztown’s first century. Life-saving classes were held in the swimming pool in the gym. The new dining hall, on the edge of the quarry, opened for Christmas dinner. The bookstore changed face to become self-service, remember trying to get books before then? The Second Shepherd's Play, a KSC production, was seen over WGAL-TV. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on north (or is it west?) campus for the new library. All seniors were evicted from campus, much to their distress. Miss Judy Sitlinger crowned junior Bonnie Burke the 1966 Homecoming queen as KSC Bears stunned Cheyney 17 to 14. The Magnificent Men came for Spring Weekend, a first! Over $300 was raised by the ASA for the restoration of art treasures damaged in the floods in Italy. The new science hall and planetarium near completion. This year the freshmen outnumbered the seniors and, as always, the women outnumbered the men over two to one. Richard Nixon would be on the K.S.C. campus for a minute or two, and if we were friendly perhaps he would even speak a few words to us. So promptly at 12:15 p.m. Thursday about 1,500 students, faculty and townspeople awaited his arrival. Onlookers Disguised Everybody came in clever disguises. President Bcckcy brought his camera along. Hawk” Bankes, pencil and paper ready, already had plans for a gala press release on the occasion. Professors milled around trying to look calm. Kutztown Area High School and elementary schools showed up in strength for an educational” affair including one 15-year-old who stood in the street doing a fair imitation of early Brigitte Bardot. Mostly, students were glad for the break from classes and the crowd was in a holiday mood. When Nixon was late, no doubt due to huge crowds in Wescosville and Maxatawany, the Heidelberg Philharmonic marched out to entertain. One song, Happy Days Are Here Again,” brought back memories of summertime in Chicago. The first indication of Nixon’s imminent arrival were six Secret Service agents cleverly disguised as Secret Service agents, in raincoats, three-colored buttons, and walkic talkies. All at once the library began to look like the Texas book depository. Signs Provided Local Republican workers strutted around for this was their day. They had made signs, conveniently given them to the school kids who would flash them around, passed out buttons to all elementary students, then sat back to enjoy their handiwork. Let me interject myself into Dick Nixon's car for a mo- ment as they top college hill. Oh God, look at the mob and were late now. Guess I'll have to stop and talk. You there. (Pointing to one of the innumerable aides each candidate has) Get a quick joke I can tell. I can fake the rest.” (Aide huffs back to car then back to Nixon). What’s this? Oh the boy-girl ratio, good enough. Let’s see, this is Cuts-town or something like that.” (The aide corrects him) Kutztown, thank you. Isn’t Shacfcr back there some place? Trot him out. This is Pennsylvania isn’t it? Flashes Victory Sign The caravan came over the hill, the mob cheered. Nixon stopped, got out, mumbled a few platitudes, flashed a victory sign and drove on to Reading. While Nixon was talking, someone managed to cleverly trap Ray Shacfcr by the sidewalk, shake his hand, and feel pleased. The crowd left, leaving the ground strewn with used Nixon signs. I took my McCarthy button and stuck it on again, losing my clever disguise as a reporter. An unidentified student got in the best line of the day as he yelled to Gov. Shaefer, Hey Ray, how about some chalk for our room?” It was over. John Wirebach The Keystone October 31, 1968 84 HOMECOMING ’68 This year's Homecoming festivities, which took place the weekend of October 18-20, managed to overcome adverse weather conditions, and proceeded as planned. The weekend began Friday night with a pep rally and fireworks display, followed by a dance and cider-pour in the gym. Saturday morning was the dampener. The alumni registration was held in the gym, but the usual parade down Main Street had to be cancelled. Saturday afternoon it continued to rain, but Kutztown's spirit could not be quenched as the Golden Bears walloped the Wolves of Cheyney, 44-19. Halftime activities were held as scheduled, though minus the floats. Donna Pinter, '70 was crowned 1968 Homecoming Queen. Her court consisted of Judy Dimmig, '70, Danielle Danko, '70, Pokey Bobal, '70 and Debbie Gould, '69. Rich Delp of the Veteran's Club received his award as The Ugliest Man on Campus” in the annual competition sponsored by APO fraternity. Schuylkill Hall won the dorm decorating contest. The floats were judged at the Freshman game the following Friday, when the sophomores won the class award. The organizational float award went to the Art Students Association. Two concerts by The Sandpipers drew full houses and received many favorable comments. The annual Homecoming Dance was held in the newly renovated Georgian Dining Hall, to the music of the Jan Scott Revue, a combo and calypso night-club group. Completing the weekend’s activities was a dance held Sunday night in the gym. Music was provided by the TR-5's, from Philadelphia. 86 87 ART CONFERENCE Pride as well as progress was evident at the 30th Annual Art Conference held October 25 in the Sharadin Studio. One of the largest conferences on the East Coast, its outstanding guest was George Segal, of Princeton University, a contemporary sculptor noted for his lifesized plaster-cast figures. He spoke on The New Reality in Sculpture” before hundreds of art educators and students. Yar Chomiky, Boris Dudchenko, Robert Mueller, Helen Rose and Clifford B. West were also guest speakers. KSC student and staff exhibits received many fine comments. Especially effective were the huge banners announcing the guests at the conference. These were designed and constructed by students in Graphic Design. Art materials and supplies occupied the lower portion of the art building. Free samples and pamphlets were available as souvenirs of this highly successful affair. 88 George Segal—sculptor Boris Dudchenko—glass sculptor REV. JAMES GROPPI Under the auspices of the Newman Club this nationally known and controversial civil rights leader spoke at Kutztown on Christian Involvement — The Christian Responsibility”. After his talk many stu- dents and faculty members took part in a lively ques- tion-and-answer session. OTHELLO An ingeniously simple set and virtuoso performances by the entire cast largely overcame the traditionally poor acoustics of the Schaeffer Auditorium when the touring National Shakespeare Company presented Othello. The first professional Shakespeare on our campus since 1964, the play was enthusiastically received by a capacity audience. 90 91 LA BOHEME Puccini's famous opera is a study in contrasts: a richness of spirit is set against the drabness of garret life, colorful flashes of comedy brighten the bitterness of poverty and the surging spirit of youth is quelled by the pall of a fatal illness. Against the stormy background of Marcello and Musctta's constant bickering, the tender love of Mimi and Rodolfo is evoked. The genius of Puccini has succeeded in compensating even for the tragic death of the frail and ailing Mimi, though the curtain falls ... the music which has brought her story and the Bohemian kingdom to life endures forever. The Keystone, November 7, 1%8 92 Peter Segal- classical guitarist 93 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR The annual Christmas Bazaar, sponsored by the Art Students Association, was held in the Sharadin Gallery, Thurs- day, December 12. The bazaar, which offers for sale a wide variety of student art work, had a special attraction this year. For a few days prior to the opening, a showcase in Old Main had displayed a number of choice art works, which were sold by silent auction to the highest bidders. All proceeds from both the auction and the bazaar went to the Association for the improvement of their programs. 94 SAM AND DAVE Billed as the Double Dynamite duo, Sam and Dave have entertained fans all over the country with their fast and furious in-person act . . . actually faster than KSC expected. What was seen of the two performers here on November 25 was great, but their 19-piece show and go-go girls seemed somewhat to overshadow the principals. Together since 1961, their greatest hits have been Hold on, I’m Cornin’” and Soul Man , their golden record. 95 1967-68 Campus History Dr. Cyrus E. Bcckey became Kutztown’s eighth president fol- lowing the death of President Italo deFrancesco in May, 1967. THE KSC CHAPTER OF PSEA-NEA HAD AN ENROLL- MENT OF 957 MEMBERS, THE LARGEST ENROLLMENT IN THE STATE. Beware of the coming of Wilbur Trout.” New ruling — slacks and bermudas now permitted in the con- course and canteen of Old Main after 8 p.m.! Co-ed swimming — an innovation in this year’s athletic program. Student body reaches 4,000 and the faculty total more than 200. Apathy on campus bucked — Speak Out” expressed the desire for improvements but had no willingness to work. Manners still a big problem in KSCs dining hall. Fraternity-Sorority idea proposed as a solution to KSC’s suitcase college” problem. The Keystone goes weekly. James Farmer, former director of CORE, speaks at KSC. APO searches for a formidable” bear approximately 12 feet high and made of stone, cement or metal, to adorn our stately-treed campus. KSC Veteran's Club received a plaque in appreciation for Christ- mas cards sent to the USS Lowe. Housing still a big problem for seniors. The KSC population outnumbers the town's. Kitchen help protests mistreatment from dining hall service. Standing ovations and packed houses marked the performances of The Happenings” on Winter Weekend. Spring Weekend goes Motown. KSC FRESHMAN FOOTBALL TEAM FINISHED THE SEA- SON UNDEFEATED. Dick Gregory shocks our KSC community with his bluntness. The spaciousness, the quiet carpeting, the study areas, the telephones, the new audio- visual department and expanded facilities for library science majors are just a few things to be thankful for. Also, the library will be able to accommodate ; 300,000 volumes, com- pared to the old's 100,000. The shelves may still look bare, but check again in a few years. The books were transfered from the old building to the new by every kind of carrier possible in six hours and 13 minutes — a record time, Mrs. Youst, the librarian attested. Some volunteers made 26 round trips, and a lot more had sore muscles from lifting books from the stacks, — but all agreed at the end of the day it was a job well done. 108 rnn Basketball Team 1968-69 : Letter-winners in basketball 1967-68. Paint a ceiling panel in the Big G and get a free pizza. 134 The Keystone's reaction to the presidential candidates included this line, George Wallace is incredible, Nixon a tired old hack politi- cian and Hubert Humphrey a tool. The new student center, located behind the art building, was officially opened in November. One hundred thousand books were moved in six hours, 13 min- utes, to the new Rohrbach Library. The Keystone receives a first-class rating award from the Asso- ciated College Press. The SAB received a thank-you letter from Mrs. Robert Kennedy for KSC’s sympathy card. Fifty-five per cent of the undergraduates vote in favor of having fraternities and sororities on campus.
