Janus-faced, we contemplate Kutztown State College 1967. Looking back . . . the crazy, happy-sad days of customs . . . days spent apologizing to cracks, chanting Disconnect Connecticut, being herded everywhere by those terrible customs officials, trying to sneak off after dinner and ... Hey, FROSH!! . . . Scum of the earth . . . the tug-of-war at the afternoon games . . . the long, hot, dusty walk to the FROSH picnic ... a flaming bonfire, its sparks rising high into the deep, dark sky ... a huge ring of new faces, do you know the person on your right? your left? . . . now you do . . . the Alma Mater . . . and, finally, dinks flying into the air of the auditorium at Induction . . . you're Freshmen now! And it was true . . . the time of evaluation was here . . . bull sessions in the dorms . . . new people, new ideas ... an exchange over a cup of coffee in Chez Nous . . . then — a flag at half mast . . . the assassination . . . IMPOSSIBLE! . . . the first mid term grades . . . what you expected? . . . organization to elect class officers . . . that first Homecoming float ... an onion snow and winter is here . . .

Remember those first finals . . . driving that back road in all the snow . . . digging out . . . school goes on . . . spring breaks through with the first green shoots from the trees . . . the first rain . . . won't it ever stop raining? ... a slippery street . . . cars, trucks, and more cars . . . WALK . . . better run with that art project . . . overdue books again? . . . why, oh why, did they build this place right in the middle of Rt. 222? Years roll on . . . students drop from the ranks . . . some stay and begin to specialize . . . summers pass to fall and the work begins again ... we grow, we learn . . . from each other, from our professors, about ourselves . . . Ahead lies life itself . . . the college will grow and change . . . those bare skyscrapers of cold steel will be brick covered buildings one day ... we won't recognize the renovated Old Main with its stern chicken-head clock tower . . . more students, better students will come every year ... a college now, someday ... a university? . . . and the people, they too, will change . . . new professors, new and bigger departments . . . the graduates . . . move on ... a job . . . marriage . . . grad school ... a date with Uncle Sam . . . some will go away . . . some will stay nearby . . . but, most will return . . . someday . . . with pride in their future achievements . . . and pride that they knew KSC when . . .
