On the other hand, on campus, with a large measure of freedom from the stifling conditions of the city, students and faculty have created a cultural setting of their own which is generally undisturbed by the evils of large masses of population, even though these centers are close enough for sociological and educational study or for the occasional fling in the city. Thus the college stands as a citadel, a center of culture, an oasis in the midst of megalopolis. While our immediate neighborhood suggests a simple and relatively quiet demeanor, the intellectual pursuits and other activities on the hill celebrate the life of the mind, and ring with the vigor of youth. Finally, there is the indigenous culture of the area, that of the Pennsyl- vania Germans. They have particular habits of speech, a folk-lore, an insistence on basic virtues, and rather unique arts and crafts. Vis-a-vis these time-honored facets of culture we find the multiferous habits and mores of students from forty-seven counties in Pennsylvania, fourteen states, and nine foreign countries.
