1967 KEYSTONIA KUTZTOWN STATE COLLEGE KUTZTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA Dr. Italo L de Francesco President of Kutztown State College ENVIRONMENT FOR LEARNING For years I was puzzled, and somewhat disturbed, by the fact that Kutztown State College is situated exactly midway between Reading and Allentown. The notion in my mind was that we were not in the city and not quite in the country and, therefore, had the advantages of neither. But somewhere along the way, a new realization dawned on me — the founding fathers knew what they were doing when the school was originally founded and located here. For that matter, they have been knowledgeable at every step of her growth as an institution of higher education. Here, indeed, is a reasonable quiet area where one can still look up and see the blue sky; here again, it is possible to look ahead and see fields of grain or green pastures set against a background of purple mountains. Yet in all this, one realizes that he is only a few miles away from major transportation routes, airlines, industry, big business, and centers of culture. After thirty-one years of pondering, I have concluded that Kutztown is quite fortunate in her location between two fine cities, eighteen miles away in either direction, and on the main stem to New York or Philadelphia or to the state capital, Harrisburg. In order to properly appraise the blessings of our geographic location, it is essential to account for many social elements, chief among these the cultural assets in Allentown and Reading: museums, musical organizations, big industry, big business, the theater, and other social conveniences of con- temporary communities. These facilities are available whether for study or personal engagement. 4 On the other hand, on campus, with a large measure of freedom from the stifling conditions of the city, students and faculty have created a cultural setting of their own which is generally undisturbed by the evils of large masses of population, even though these centers are close enough for sociological and educational study or for the occasional fling in the city. Thus the college stands as a citadel, a center of culture, an oasis in the midst of megalopolis. While our immediate neighborhood suggests a simple and relatively quiet demeanor, the intellectual pursuits and other activities on the hill celebrate the life of the mind, and ring with the vigor of youth. Finally, there is the indigenous culture of the area, that of the Pennsyl- vania Germans. They have particular habits of speech, a folk-lore, an insistence on basic virtues, and rather unique arts and crafts. Vis-a-vis these time-honored facets of culture we find the multiferous habits and mores of students from forty-seven counties in Pennsylvania, fourteen states, and nine foreign countries. As these forces interact, students and faculty are enriched and broadened. I. L. deFrancesco President BOARD OF TRUSTEES Seated — Dr. Muriel M. Berman, Mrs. Carl J. Bast, Atty. William M. Looking back . . . the crazy, happy-sad days of customs . . . days spent apologizing to cracks, chanting Disconnect Connecticut, being herded everywhere by those terrible customs officials, trying to sneak off after dinner and ... Hey, FROSH!! . . . Scum of the earth . . . the tug-of-war at the afternoon games . . . the long, hot, dusty walk to the FROSH picnic ... a flaming bonfire, its sparks rising high into the deep, dark sky ... a huge ring of new faces, do you know the person on your right? your left? . . . now you do . . . the Alma Mater . . . and, finally, dinks flying into the air of the auditorium at Induction . . . you're Freshmen now! And it was true . . . the time of evaluation was here . . . bull sessions in the dorms . . . new people, new ideas ... an exchange over a cup of coffee in Chez Nous . . . then — a flag at half mast . . . the assassination . . . IMPOSSIBLE! . . . the first mid term grades . . . what you expected? . . . organization to elect class officers . . . that first Homecoming float ... an onion snow and winter is here . . . Remember those first finals . . . driving that back road in all the snow . . . digging out . . . school goes on . . . spring breaks through with the first green shoots from the trees . . . the first rain . . . won't it ever stop raining? ... a slippery street . . . cars, trucks, and more cars . . . WALK . . . better run with that art project . . . overdue books again? . . . why, oh why, did they build this place right in the middle of Rt. 222? Years roll on . . . students drop from the ranks . . . some stay and begin to specialize . . . summers pass to fall and the work begins again ... we grow, we learn . . . from each other, from our professors, about ourselves . . . Ahead lies life itself . . . the college will grow and change . . . those bare skyscrapers of cold steel will be brick covered buildings one day ... we won't recognize the renovated Old Main with its stern chicken-head clock tower . . . more students, better students will come every year ... a college now, someday ... a university? . . . and the people, they too, will change . . . new professors, new and bigger departments . . . the graduates . . . move on ... a job . . . marriage . . . grad school ... a date with Uncle Sam . . . some will go away . . . some will stay nearby . . . but, most will return . . . someday . . . with pride in their future achievements . . . and pride that they knew KSC when . . . a. Carolyn Zingone English 110 FAREWELL And so, the end . . . our class president, Michael Gilmartin leaves a challenge . . . Quietly, in the one hundred-and-one year history of Kutz- town State College, a small rural community has been deeply changed. Of late, the noise has grown louder and the college stands in sharp contrast to its environment. With strong pro- grams in many directions of the educational field, Kutztown is growing at a rapid pace. Her strength as an institution of higher learning is being felt throughout the Commonwealth as both a model and a goal. Progress seems to be the password at Kutztown, but it comes with much responsibility. A large part of that responsi- bility is placed before the student. By accepting this challenge in a mature and forthright manner, the student will also grow. Emphatically, growth comes through change, and while we remain students, we should take a more defined part in the effects that Kutztown institutes in itself, the community, and the Commonwealth. As alumni, this task becomes more diffi- cult, but we have gained the advantage of having strength through growth and progress. To those of us who leave here now, I wish success. To those who remain, I urge you to accept the responsibility you inherit as a student at Kutztown State College. Respectfully yours, Michael J. Gilmartin President, Class of 1967 and we, the staff of the Keystonia 1967 leave a memory ... of times you spent here . . . people you met here . . . and things you did here.
