9 presiaeni s message The class of 1966 is the Centennial Class. This is a distinction which will not be soon forgotten. However, one may ask: what else is there about the Centennial Year which will be indelibly written into the pages of history and will have a bearing on the members of the class of '66? First and foremost, there is the impres- sive company of distinguished Kutztown- ians who have made contributions to the advancement of American society. The chief implication of this fact for members of this class is clear and carries with it the moral obligation to match and surpass the past. A second element which relates the class to the Centennial is the evolution of Kutz- town as an institution of learning. From a normal school set up to prepare elementary teachers to a multi-purpose state college with a growing graduate division, it is quite a distance. But it was an inevitable feat made possible by the clear needs of education across the nation. What will the future of Kutztown be? Here is ground for speculation and for the imagination. But the rapidity of change points out that members of the class of 1966 will be deeply involved in the imminent changes in American education and the further changes at K.S.C. What will be their contribution? Thirdly and finally, there is another relationship between the class of '66 and the Centennial — it is the matter of loyalty to a college which has fought for its very existence at various times during the past 100 years. Today the battle is more sophisticated, perhaps more subtle, but it is going on nevertheless. One wonders what power resides in early 9,500 living alumni to sway the fortunes of their Alma Mater! Pennsylvania is undergoing a sharp renewal right now, and the success of what, hopefully may be a renaissance for our Commonwealth depends on the alert- ness, the activity, and the influence which our alumni — the class of 1966 — will bring to bear on the problems faced by the Commonwealth, Education is the para- mount issue. As I write these lines, the Centennial program is taking tangible form. We are engaged in illuminating the achievements of the past, but even as we do so, we suggest that you, as a class and as individ- uals, look to the future, for it is in the next century that Kutztown's destiny lies — even as your own success does. Cordially yours, Italo L. deFrancesco President dr. italo I. de franceso, president of kutztown state college
