Most of the memories will be forgotten before this book moves to another town. Most of the memories will never leave the page because they will not have been yours. Most of the memories will be things remembered without help of pictures, text, page or book because they will be yours. But some of this book β just a little bit of it β will possibly, probably be yours. It will be yours and maybe no one else's. This is the dedication. a jBgS W .VAVA W.V Aβ .V.'.Vyv william w. serantorΒ , governor of Pennsylvania governor's message As Governor of Pennsylvania, I am proud of the long and effective service of Kutztown State College to the people of our State. I extend heartiest congratulations to the administration, faculty and students of the College as they celebrate the school's Centennial in 1966. Education in Pennsylvania in the past century has seen fantastic progress. By helping to furnish leadership for our educational system, Kutztown has played a major role in this progress. Looking to the future, the College promises to continue to meet the growing educational demands of its students and the Kutztown area. May the Centennial be a meaningful observance for all who participate. William W. Scranton Governor 9 presiaeni s message The class of 1966 is the Centennial Class. This is a distinction which will not be soon forgotten. However, one may ask: what else is there about the Centennial Year which will be indelibly written into the pages of history and will have a bearing on the members of the class of '66? First and foremost, there is the impres- sive company of distinguished Kutztown- ians who have made contributions to the advancement of American society. The chief implication of this fact for members of this class is clear and carries with it the moral obligation to match and surpass the past. A second element which relates the class to the Centennial is the evolution of Kutz- town as an institution of learning. From a normal school set up to prepare elementary teachers to a multi-purpose state college with a growing graduate division, it is quite a distance. But it was an inevitable feat made possible by the clear needs of education across the nation. What will the future of Kutztown be? Here is ground for speculation and for the imagination. But the rapidity of change points out that members of the class of 1966 will be deeply involved in the imminent changes in American education and the further changes at K.S.C. What will be their contribution? Thirdly and finally, there is another relationship between the class of '66 and the Centennial β it is the matter of loyalty to a college which has fought for its very existence at various times during the past 100 years. Today the battle is more sophisticated, perhaps more subtle, but it is going on nevertheless. One wonders what power resides in early 9,500 living alumni to sway the fortunes of their Alma Mater! Pennsylvania is undergoing a sharp renewal right now, and the success of what, hopefully may be a renaissance for our Commonwealth depends on the alert- ness, the activity, and the influence which our alumni β the class of 1966 β will bring to bear on the problems faced by the Commonwealth, Education is the para- mount issue. As I write these lines, the Centennial program is taking tangible form. We are engaged in illuminating the achievements of the past, but even as we do so, we suggest that you, as a class and as individ- uals, look to the future, for it is in the next century that Kutztown's destiny lies β even as your own success does. Character is fundamental to success in school, business, church, or professional life. Recognizing it in men and women who have been successful, I rate the con- fidence of employer higher than the com- petence of the employee. The person who is competent yet fails to inspire confidence finds himself subject to limitations and controls. Business prefers a man whose character is beyond question. Confidence is a basic consideration. From there I go to build competence. As an educated-minded nation, America is faced with serious problems. If only we had more preparation for the duties of life, some people think our democracy would be secure. Physical facilities very often do not alone improve the quality of education since the effectiveness of all education depends upon the teacher. Great teachers are found in every school. When they remain long enough and when there are enough of them, the community becomes great for there is no resisting their inspirational power. They will educate our children to live in our American democracy. They will vitalize our schools by their avid desire for educa- tion by vitalizing themselves, and by working together. The challenge of service must attract young people to the teaching profession. The person who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow is uneducated the day after. Each member of the class of 1966 must be prepared to meet changes and improve- ments both in our college and our com- munities. You must promote character molding and citizenship building among your boys and girls. With this faith and hope in your pro- fession and God's help, may you dedicate your lives to the noblest task of all β the teaching of boys and girls. Newtown W. It's not that you're really older. But the naive smile is gone. The people you've called characters Become a little more so. And the profs a little better or worse. In a few years the beers and words Will seem like a wild happy novel. But now, the time is real. The quiet dreams that came at first Seem a little sadder now. And their colors run toward gray. The faces you see were yours. But now your only bond Is an awkward grin. The words you'll use to explain it Aren't really true They're only symbols of a feeling. And you can't tell anyone a feeling. To some it was bricks and ivy. To some it was people and ideas. To everyone it was a time when . . .
