Kane Attorney William M. DeLong Mrs. George R. Matthews Education Means Personal Involvement To many young people education, and particularly higher education, means simply a continuation of a process by which they acquire more knowledge. This is true only in a general sense, and only insofar as accumulation of facts is concerned. Educations, as we interpret it in the context of our times, goes far beyond these narrow limits. Facts and data are useful only to the extent thot they repre- sent the raw materials necessary for the solution of problems. Much more is needed: insight into problems, ability to organize, ability to synthesize, and ability to analyze. These abilities are essentially of a creative nature and cannot be learned from books. They are the stuff of experience. Experience, on the other hand, cannot all be vicarious; much of it must be real and personal. In sciences, personal experience means working in the laboratory with live materials and real instruments. The results arc then a part of one's total knowledge. But in fields such as the humanities and the social sciences, personal experience is of another sort — it calls for involvement of a different type. For example, what constitutes experience in the social sciences? Briefly, it may be said thot unless one becomes involved in elections, in debate, in office-holding, and in assuming responsibility for one's own acts — unless a student participates in the total scheme of learning and living, he is only partially educated. Most members if this class will enter teaching or go to graduate schools; a few will enter a variety of businesses. Whatever they may engage in will coll for immediate and total involvement. As we salute the class of May 1965, we hope that they have availed themselves of all the opportunities which Kutztown State College has made available to them. The extent to which they have become involved will mark them as partly educated or as fully educated and, hence, ready to that degree, for life ahead. I. L. de Francesco President Dr. Italo L. de Francesco President of Kutztown State College 7
