Kutztown State College 1965 KEYSTONIA Kutztown, Pennsyh CONTENTS Administration 4 Art Education 18 General Education 10 Liberal Arts 74 Elementary Education 40 Secondary Education 86 Library Science 7 8 Activities 118 Administration His Excellency, William W. Scranton Governor of Pennsylvania I Board of Trustees Judge Allan K. Grim, Chairman Mrs. Carl J. Bast, Vice Chairman Dr. Muriel M. Berman, Secretary-Treasurer Mr. Karl F. Weber Mr. Earl K. Witwer Mr. Peter Mahalage Mr. Benjamin J. Kane Attorney William M. DeLong Mrs. George R. Matthews Education Means Personal Involvement To many young people education, and particularly higher education, means simply a continuation of a process by which they acquire more knowledge. This is true only in a general sense, and only insofar as accumulation of facts is concerned. Educations, as we interpret it in the context of our times, goes far beyond these narrow limits. Facts and data are useful only to the extent thot they repre- sent the raw materials necessary for the solution of problems. Much more is needed: insight into problems, ability to organize, ability to synthesize, and ability to analyze. These abilities are essentially of a creative nature and cannot be learned from books. They are the stuff of experience. Experience, on the other hand, cannot all be vicarious; much of it must be real and personal. In sciences, personal experience means working in the laboratory with live materials and real instruments. The results arc then a part of one's total knowledge. But in fields such as the humanities and the social sciences, personal experience is of another sort — it calls for involvement of a different type. For example, what constitutes experience in the social sciences? Briefly, it may be said thot unless one becomes involved in elections, in debate, in office-holding, and in assuming responsibility for one's own acts — unless a student participates in the total scheme of learning and living, he is only partially educated. Most members if this class will enter teaching or go to graduate schools; a few will enter a variety of businesses. Whatever they may engage in will coll for immediate and total involvement. As we salute the class of May 1965, we hope that they have availed themselves of all the opportunities which Kutztown State College has made available to them. The extent to which they have become involved will mark them as partly educated or as fully educated and, hence, ready to that degree, for life ahead. I. What better time than now for every Graduate to reaffirm his faith in God and emulate the great Builders of our beloved country — America — God-fearing men and women who tuned in prayer for guidance and inspiration. I used to wonder why graduation is called commencement, but I think I know now. When you walk across the stage and receive that coveted bit of beautifully engraved parchment, you are not so much finishing school as com- mencing a broader field of activity, a richer vista of life. Now you are at liberty to make your own way in the world, and in school you have acquired the tools to unlock the door of your future. President Garfield once said: Things do not turn up in this world until somebody turns them up. Don't be discouraged if at first you have to dig ditches when your ambition is to rear skyscrapers toward the sun. My advice is, do the best you can at the job you have, and eventuolly opportunity will open its doors to you. You ond all your generation are destined to play the role of worldsmiths whose hammers will shape the earth into new patterns. What- ever you do, wherever you serve, you will help to direct the thoughts of society and to wield a constructive influence in the circles wherein you live, move, and have your being. You can be wholly as important as the next fellow, for all have the privilege of being world-smiths, challenged to build a more radiant tomorrow. WHO IS EDUCATED? - A professor in Chicago is reported to have given the following test to his pupils. He told them they were not really educated unless they could say yes to all these questions: Has your education given you sympathy with all good causes and made you espouse them? Has it made you public-spirited? Has it made you a brother to the weak? Have you learned how to make friends and to keep them? Do you know what it is to be a friend yourself? Can you look an honest man or a pure woman straight in the eye? Do you see anything to love in a little child? Will a lonely dog follow you down the street? Do you think woshing dishes and lowing corn just as compatible with high thinking? os piano ploying or golf? Can you look into a mud puddle by the wayside and see anything in the puddle but mud? I shall close with a COMMENCEMENT PRAYER. THOU Great Teacher, we pray Thy blessing upon the graduates who now face life's new adven- tures. Give them determination to merit the sacrifices made by their parents and teachers, that they may prove o blessing in the age in which they live, and glorify Thee, O God, Who gave them life. Help them to earn their right to a place in the world by making good. Bless their parents and teachers, may their sacrificial efforts be rewarded by the noble, useful lives of those whom they have lovingly guided. We pray this in Thy Name O Master of our schools. Amen.
