President’s Message Within and Beyond You A final message for a graduating class is a time-honored task which should be assumed with ease and confidence. But the ominous and complex times in which wc live preclude such an approach. I-ofty idealism, courageous action, spiritual fortitude, creative thinking, resolute behaviour—all these come to mind swiftly iis commendable directions for each of you as you launch out into a world beset by conflicts and tossed about by doubts as to its own ultimate course and eventual fate. And yet, even these suggestions appear repetitious as the drama of history unfolds day by day before our very eyes. What, then, can I point out as a direction for the years ahead? A simple, accessible, and unfailing admonition: search both within and beyond yourselves. Four years in college have exposed you to much new knowledge, have drawn you into intellectual, moral, and spiritual encounters, have opened wide opportunities for you to think and read and argue about Cod, man, the physical universe, and the institutions of society. These experiences have forged potent weapons wit iln you. You now have an arsenal—an arsenal of ideas and ideals concerning Cod, man. the universe, and society. It is yours to use. It has more firepower than mere facts and knowledge. It projects you beyond the self. It is your position of strength. In the years ahead you will be called upon to take positions on human rights, social values, government, religion, and world ethics. Upon what bases will you take a stand? If four years of serious thinking, debating, and growing in knowledge as well as in wisdom have any reward, it will be in terms of your capacity to act, aided by knowledge and wisdom, to meet the issues of life. Your ability to look not only within you, but beyond you as well, will constitute a constant star to steer you by in the seemingly uncertain, but challenging and progressing human society. 12 I. L. de Francesco

-T Alumni Message Each member of the 1962 class upon graduation from this college is congratulated by the General Alumni Association. There is no short road to successful teaching. It is a broad highway that demands, first of all, hard and consistent work. How thankful wc should Ik; to have some work, occupying all our considerations for at least a large part of our waking hours-work in which we have faith, pride, and happiness, Teaching is dedicated work. between the successful teacher and the mediocre teacher, there may he only a few hours of hard work. Many a treginning teacher strives for popularity rather than success. This popularity sometimes becomes notoriety when he fails to show a sincerity of purpose or fails to lead an exemplary life composed of cultural achievements. The work of teaching young minds provides the nucleus for other professions or trades. I feel exceedingly sorry for the teacher who complains, “I have nothing to do, or “I do not know what to do with myself.” This individual is not following the cultural highway, but is rambling along the little dusty roads—u victim of all the distracting influences of life. It is a confession of the low road that some souls travel when they Spend their lives idling away their time by filling the loafer's bench, that a high social rank is indicative of a fruitful and successful life. Einstein and Edison would have received very little mention on the society pages of our modern newspapers, but they have contributed much to the civilization of the world. When you leave the portals of this institution this spring, you will be expected to assume your rightful place in society. Education today does not end with graduation. It is a continuous process in which progress is made slowly hut surely. We travel over roads which have many hills, pitfalls, and detours. Sometimes these alluring attractions beckon to us to discontinue our journey. You have a future with a responsibility, not only to your school, hut also to your commun- ity and your country. To each and every one I wish the best of success and happiness, and I hope that you will make your parents and your school proud of you. May God’s blessing rest upon you. Ncwlon W. CcUt President General Alumni Avtociiitlon 13
