They may refer to it as the age of science; if they are more discerning, they will call it the atomic age; but. if they are concerned with the total pattern of development, they may identify it as the age of educational renascence. I incline toward the latter definition, largely because of professional interest and pride, but more particularly because of the inclusiveness and pervasiveness of the term education. Recently, our attention has been called to the Russian commitment to education and to the fact that in the U. S. S. R. education amounts to a passion. As far back as the thirties. Stalin said to the cream of Russian youth gathered at Yalta education alone will solve our prob- lems. and, through education we will conquer the world. Americans are pondering these statements. Slightly over three-hundred fifty years of notional history have been replete with success in nearly all material enterprises. But, os we mature and reflect, and as we subject our accomplishments to critical scrutiny, we are not too pleased. In consequence, os never before, education is being accorded a central place in the concerns of all Americans. We have come to realize the political fortune, the business success, the economic well-being, the spiritual stature, the ethical standards, and the aesthetic sensitivity of our people are intimately bound up with the quality of our education. Indeed, this self-scrutiny has found us wanting in those very areas which ore most crucial for ultimate survival. Ultimate survival is not a mere shibboleth—it is stern reality which involves our freedoms, our hopes, our aspira- tions. and our way of life. Neither teachers in the notion's classrooms nor teachers of teachers in colleges and universities dare to forget the awful implication of the current international struggle. Science, the humanities, the behavioral sciences, in fact all forms of education, must help us discover clearer pur- poses and new depths so thot the youth of America may respond with confidence and vigor to the exigencies of the present and of the challenges of the future. The Class of I960 is indeed fortunate to be graduating from college at a time when high value is placed on quality education and quality teaching. The best wishes of the faculty and of the administration of the college go with them in the hope thot the educational renascence moy have given each member a new purpose and a new vision to face the tasks ahead. Their Thursday business sessions this year have resulted in several new additions to our campus including two hard-surfaced tennis courts and scoreboards for both football and basketball. Probably the most appre- ciated purchase was the cinemascope screen and stereophonic sound system for the auditorium. Under the leadership of Judy Derr, the board distributed alloca- tions to additional clubs, made improve- ments in the awards system, and gave a new look and emphasis to May Day. The Student Activity Board is planning and looking forward to the day when they will start work on a Student Union building. 8 October 31, 1959. All-College Revue The audience which viewed the produc- tion of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court felt themselves transported back to the days when knighthood was in a most unusual flower. The dialogue con- sisted mainly of forsooth and gad- zooks, strictly medieval terminology. The brilliantly colored scenery and the even more brilliantly colored costumes and ac- cessories made the real court of King Arthur seem like a drab peasant's hovel in comparison. Veteran Roy Miller ployed the Yankee who created o turmoil of epic proportions at Camelot and of even greater propor- tions in the heart of the fair Alisande, played by Cecelia Snyder. 9 Homecoming This year’s Homecoming Day was ushered in by a cold rain which failed fo dampen the spectator's spirits or halt the scheduled festivities entirely. Carole Sholly, Home- coming queen, and her attendents, Eleanor Hale and Betty Heintzelman, were intro- duced to guests and alumni at the noon luncheon in the Georgian Dining Room. Simultaneously, Tau Kappa members held their annual reunion in the Private Dining Room. Then, despite the heavy downfall, many Kutztown spectators went out to see their October 31. 1959. Disappointment seemed to be the order of the day: the half-time proceedings were cancelled. Pre- game activities had been completed, how- ever, and the Junior class added another feather to its cap when its float won first prize. The other Homecoming activities were the crowning of the queen at the tea, the all-college revue presentation of A Con- necticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and the Halloween Dance sponsored by the Junior class. With heads bowed, each expressed gratitude in his own way for the blessings of the past year. The sound of swirling gowns and the scent of flowers filling the air followed the elaborate repast. Silvery decorations pro- vided a romantic background, and the soft music made the couples feel as though they could have danced all night. November 21. 1959. The year's most colorful and impressive event was the inauguration of Dr. Italo de Francesco as the seventh president of Kubztown State College. State and college officials throughout Pennsylvania converged on the campus November 21, 1959 to wit- ness the ceremony. The solemn academic procession, the stirring anthem by the choir, the actual installation ceremony, Dr. Charles H. Boehm's speech and the new The Inauguration president's inaugural address combined to make the day a memorable one for all who attended. The festivities culminated in a luncheon in the Georgian Dining Room, featuring a symposium on The Tasks of the College in Our Time. Good wishes were extended to Dr. de Francesco by various civic and educational leaders of the service area. Decombor 3, 1959. Tho line it long bul fho torvice fott ot Iho PSEA-tpontorod too. Art Bazaar This year's Art Bazaar was much like those of past years — nearly everything salable was sold in the first fifteen minutes! The auction which climaxed the bazaar was a departure from past practices: only the choicest items were offered for sale rather than the few pieces of unsold merchandise. For those who chose only to observe the sale of objets dart,” there were cookies, cake and punch on sale to make the time spent even more pleasant. Docembor 7. 1959. Left bonk orti t. Christmas Dinner and Dance After a satiating dinner, the Collegion- aires provided an additional religious note to the occasion by favoring the diners with Christmas hymns and carols. A little later, dashing escorts and their resplendent partners glided to the music of Dick Bruce and his orchestra. The program consisted of new arrangements and the standards — Pennsylvania 6-5000, String of Pearls, In the Mood —all identified with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The women of the college were intro- duced to the new spring fashions, from bridal gowns to swimsuits, at the annual Hess Brothers' Fashion Show. Other assemblies featured the Warren Boys Choir, the college Drama Club’s pre- sentation of A Phoenix Too Frequent, and Mr. John Rothermel’s lecture on Russia. Evening Performances The fine afternoon and evening perform- ances were centered around the areas of music, dance, and drama. The names of Marjorie Mitchell and the piano, Joseph Gifford and the dance, and Players Inc. and Shakespeare will be indelibly impressed in our minds. The Players Inc. this year pre- sented two performances of Macbeth, one in the afternoon for the area high schools and one in the evening for the college students. The famous Baltimore Symphony Orches- tra, Peter Adler conducting, struggled through a snowstorm to present some of the world's greatest classical music. Tchai- kowsky's Symphony No. 5, the last number on the program, received tremendous applause. February 10, I960. An armload of books, scurrying feet, a bewildered expression, and no sense of direction—aptly describe the Kutztown frosh. Buttons, books, and bean- ies were their trademark. Rasping throats were the result of the many command per- Tho clatt float. formances in which upperclassmen were held spellbound by over four hundred voices screaming in trembling unison. Although orientation to the rigors of college life seemed a harrowing experience at times, the result was a confident, well-adjusted Freshmen Class, versed in K.S.C. regulations and traditions. The Sophomore Class September, 1959 marked the beginning of the second year for the Sophomore Class. It marked, too, a new sense of class unity; not one of necessity but one of free choice. This sense of unity expressed itself in the spirit of cooperation which character- ized the building of the class float and the preparations for the class-sponsored St. Valentine Dance. The Sophomores were now in a position to salve some of the wounds they had suf- fered the year before. This feeling was tempered by a genuine desire to see this years' Freshman Class as integrated a part of the college as the Sophomores had become. President ................................... The Junior Class With the start of the first semester, the Juniors began the last half of four very fruitful years of college living. Those who realized the significance of this moment might have felt a slight twinge of nostalgia. They were no longer timid Freshmen or more self-assured Sophomores, but, along with the Seniors, they had become the patriarchal leaders of the school. Respon- sibilities weighed more heavily upon their shoulders. However, most of the Juniors did not stop to pay reverence to this fleeting moment. They were busy with the Home- coming float, with ordering their class rings, and with early-bird planning for the All- College Revue. And so the moment went by unnoticed, and the Juniors became senior members in the college fraternity. President ..................... Armond Cinciripino Vice-President .................... Sparked by Sal Messina's passing and Dick Felsburg's receiving, Coach Patton's '59 Golden Avalanche again spurted late in the season as they had done in 1958. This season, the team finished with a 3-4-1 mark. Heavily-favored Mansfield and underdog Kutztown battled to a 0-0 deadlock in the rain and mud before a Homecoming Day crowd of twelve hundred. The defensive play of Dick Eyrich, Keith Wilcox, Pat Anderson, and Len Williams kept the Mans- field backs completely bottled up. An inter- ception in the end zone by Charlie Bilella cut off the visitor's farthest penetration. The opening game produced a nip-and- tuck battle with East Stroudsburg until the Pocono mountain boys broke loose in the third quarter for three touch-downs to wrap up the game 22-0. The Avalanche then traveled to Cheyney, defeating them 19-6. This win was followed by three straight de- feats at the hands of Millersville, Trenton, and New Britain. Although penalized a new national colleqiate record of 225 yards, K.S.C. managed to defeat the National Aggies 7-6. The team topped the season by edging out Montclair 6-3. Awards were given to Dick Kyle, most valuable player; Bill Nill, Captain; Len Williams, most valuable senior; and Ted Williams, most promising freshman; at the post-season banquet. 50 51 Basketball Coach Walt Risley and his history- making KSC cagers, led by veterans John Bishop, Tony LaScala, Arlan Burkert, Bob Furniss and Tom Mullen, wec.e strongly- favored contenders throughout the season for P.S.C.C. title. Supporting the five were Denny Bonser and Ron Lauchner, two Fresh- men stand-outs. After setting a school record of 105 points against Trenton's 60, the Avalanche charged up a 5-0 mark before encounter- ing West Chester and losing 67-48. With practically the same squad returning next season, KSC fans can expect to see more records broken as our cagers take to the floor. 52 KSC . .... 105 Trenton SC . 60 KSC .... 71 Shippensburg SC . . . . 59 KSC . ... 87 Notional Agricultural . 55 KSC . ... 91 Kings College . 85 KSC . .... 101 East Stroudsburg SC . 99 KSC .... 48 West Chester SC ... . 67 KSC . .. . . 77 Bloomsburg SC . 70 KSC . .... 75 Millersvillo SC . 72 KSC . .... 86 Kings College . 72 KSC . .... 71 East Stroudsburg SC . 66 KSC . .... 71 Chcyney SC . 54 KSC . 67 Millersville SC . 61 KSC . .... 80 Bloomsburg SC . 60 KSC . .... 67 West Chester SC ... . 68 KSC . ... 90 Cheyney SC . 80 KSC . ... . 116 Trenton SC . 70 KSC . .... 67 Shippensburg SC . .. . 68 1370 1166 new school record 3 losses (best win and loss Over-all record 14 wins record) P.S.C.C. record 10 wins 3 losses 53 Tennis The tennis team, beginning its second year on campus, is looking forward to the opening match of its season. The team will face the teams of various state colleges and plans tentatively to meet those of nearby liberal arts colleges. Last year's veterans and a number of freshmen will compose the membership. The team is the only coed var- sity organization on campus, an unusual feature. Though inexperienced in varsity competition, the players hope to make a good showing for the college. The formation of the tennis team exemplifies the trend towards a broader athletic program. Cooch ...................... Daincl Bare Advisor................ Cheerleaders The peppy Kutztown cheerleaders, led by Velda Flack, did their utmost to stimulate enthusiasm amidst the spectators at football and basketball games this year. They introduced new cheers and new rou- tines to the old cheers. Their voices led the rest in response to Kerm Bartholomew's trumpeted charge and to the Heidelberg- introduced cheers! Hoarse throats were the only rewards for their spirited antics. 55 Pre-season indications show that Coach Walter Risley and a veteran diamond squad will be returning to give KSC a successful year at the plate and defensively in state conference baseball. Coach Risley's biggest problem now is to find replacements for the second base- man, third baseman, and general all-around utility man. Expected to back up the Ava- lanche attack will be outfielders Gene Ker- shner and Ron Moyer and a host of prospec- tive candidates, eagerly awaiting the cry Play ball! The infield will consist of first baseman Arlan Burkert, short stop John Dryer, and pitchers Art Sieger and Terry Deck who will do the apple-flinging for the Avalanche. Joining these veterans will be a score of promising freshmen. The team, backed by such material, will be fighting for a conference championship. Baseball 56 Track The track team, under the leadership of Coach Joseph Patton, is making prepara- tions for the opening of its season. The boys have been working out on their own and will soon begin scheduled practices. The discus, shot-put, javelin, high jump, and running events will be thoroughly covered. With the addition of new and promising material, the team is looking forward to a better sea- son than they enjoyed last year. 57 LEADERS CLU8 Left to right, Firjt row: E. Spongier. 8. Wolmor. E. Geiss, President General Alumni Association All teaching, whether kindergarten or university, demands good scholarship and preparation, under- standing of child nature, a neighborly personality, and a willingness to work and to serve. No matter how high your scholastic standing, how fine a personality you might hove, if you cannot get along with people, if you lack a sympathetic understanding of childhood and hove no love for the people in the community in which you work, you cannot become a MASTER TEACHER. Your willingness to work will decide whether future annals will record you os mediocre or superior. Many a beginning teacher strives for popularity rather than success. His popularity be- comes notoriety when he fails to show a sincerity of purpose. A gracious and happy spirit permeates the master teacher. His inborn quolity of mind enables him to see the greatness of the teaching mission. His high standards of personal character, common sense, and adaptability gives to the master teacher a higher sense of discrimination of values. Hence his choices will be wiser, more sincere, and more purposeful because of his long-range vision. Great teachers are found in every school: when they linger long enough and when there ore enough of them, the community becomes great—there is no resisting their inspirotional power. Whatever subject the master teacher may be teaching, it is a window through which he looks upon the world. The world of I960 will be different from 1940 and the chemistry teacher today can determine our foreign policy. Science and mathematics help to win wars, but social science must decide what direction we must go. The Generol Alumni Association congratulates each member of the I960 class upon graduation from this college. Your president and faculty have given you a wider knowledge of this world, an in- formed technique of the skills of teaching, and a richer sociol background. You hove selected o pro- fession that, with the exception of Christian mother- hood. is the salvation and hope of the future. The war against ignorance is eternal and schools must provide a broad and balanced program regardless of the child's race, sex, economic status, or geographic location. With this great faith and hope in your pro- fession and with God's help may you dedicate your lives to the noblest task of all—the teaching of children. With every good wish for a bright, happy, and adventuresome future in the teaching profession, I remain, Sincerely yours, Newton W. On our shoulders rests the future of the citizens of tomorrow. Soon, we will be afforded the greatest oppor- tunity of our teaching career: giving and sharing of ourselves. The satisfaction of knowing that we have contributed to the advancement of future generations is indeed rich and rewarding. The experiences of these past years will never be recaptured: however, the effects of these ex- periences will be infinitely valuable for us in solving the many problems which lie ahead. But. we must not allow ourselves to become lethargic, lulled by complacency, or blinded by false concepts that we hove reached the ultimate goal in educational achievement and need not look ahead to further endeavors, ensuring personal success. A famed twentieth-century leader once noted. Whoever has the youth, has the future. Our youth must not be allowed to flounder in illiteracy. Without a doubt, the educational system of our country must stimulate the minds of our younger generations, enabling them to analyze problems, discuss factors influencing wise decisions, and reach conclusions cognizant of our basic democratic ideols. The teacher is the instrument of society which motivates, instructs, and guides the younger citizens to these goals. To us. society has entrusted its youth and its future. We must not fail!
