the message of our president GREETINGS TO THE CLASS OF 1950 OUR class came to the campus at the close of id World War II and completed the requirements y for the bacca'aureate deqree during a world armistice which has existed since the shooting war end- ed. A cold war has annoyed the nations during your entire college career and the end of it is not yet in sight. During the past five years the nations have been exploring the world situation to determine the price of peace. During this same time there has developed an armament race which involves supersonic planes, bacteriological weapons, and cosmic death rays, in addition to the dreaded atomic bomb. Could it be possible that you and I are standing at the threshhold of another struggle to determine the nature of human freedom and of peace in the world? It is alleged that wars begin in the minds of men. It is also alleged that if man's desire for peace is stronger than his desire for war, peace will obtain. If these premises are valid, your role and my role as teachers, small as our roles may be, would point to the need for the teaching of peace. We must teach our generation in such a way that its interests, motives, and attitudes suggest peace and abhor war. The Prince of Peace directed us to Go teach all nations . . . Such a challenge is indeed intriguing if human survival interests us. Let us go then and teach peace and the pursuits of peace. The trustees, the faculty, and the alumni join me in congratulating you upon your graduation as teachers while the calendar stands at the half century mark and the possibilities obtain for you to see the year 2000. Looking into the future, as Tennyson did in Locksley Hall, we hope that the years ahead, by your help, may indeed be years when the war drums throbbed no longer and the battle- flags were furled in the Parliament of man, the Federation of the world.
