PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF THE STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE OF KUTZTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA • ADMINISTRATION • CLASSES • ACTIVITIES • ATHLETICS • DIRECTORY contents • ADVERTISEMENTS theme THIS IS KUTZTOWN V F we were again to examine Kutz- town State Teachers College with the eyes of a casual observer, if we were able to dissociate ourselves from the life at Kutztown and to assume the role of sightseer, many would be our impressions. This is Old Main, center of all activities. Here are housed the admin- istrative offices, approximately two- thirds of the classrooms, and the whole of the dormitories. It boasts a spacious concourse for the student's social use. This, we say, is a PART of Kutztown. We are now ascending the steps of a small but impressive stone building directly across from Old Main. The charging desk, the reference room, the reading room, and the browsing room of the library pass under our scrutiny. This, too, is a PART of Kutztown. The building to the right of the library and set back some distance from the main line of buildings is the Nathan Schaeffer Auditorium. In this Georgian building are held the weekly assemblies, evening performances, music classes, choir, and band and orchestra rehearsals. This, also, is a PART of Kutztown. Wo pass over ihe laboratory school and the infirmary to the gymnasium. Few are the students leaving Kutztown who have not been enrolled in a gym class, who have not enjoyed dancing on its floor, or who have not been spectators at a basketball game. The hockey field, the baseball diamond, and the football field are visible from the gymnasium. All these are a PART of Kutztown. A little removed from the other campus buildings stands the Sharadin Art Studio, one of the latest buildings. Complete with classroom, gallery, and craft rooms, the Studio is home to approxi- mately one-third of Kutztown's students. This is a PART of Kutztown. But is this really Kutztown? Where is the student? the teacher? Come again to Old Main. See the pulsing crowd, the humming corridor, the post office rush, the bulletin board enthusiast. Wait for the quiet that follows the changing of classes; sej the latecomer, the newcomer. Follow that stack of books to her habitat, the library. Look over the shoulder of the Britannica bug, follow the librarian into the browsing room. Look out the window at the moving throng of assembly-goers. Climb the gymnasium steps; see a gym class in operation or basketball practice. From where you stand on the gymnasium's topmost step, let your eyes follow the weary art student as he slowly weaves his way across the campus to the art studio, stopping only to shift from one arm to another his belated art project. See the frenzied mob en route to report examination conflicts, the student who manages to endanger life and limb crossing Route 222 in his effort to check one last date in his voluminous notes. Note the havoc of sleepless nights in the eyes of so many pale faces. Follow the students into the Georgian dining room where they assemble for the leisure dinner hour, take part in the saying of grace, come out into the blue room for dancing. Hear the public address system blasting, the tittering of girls as they wait for the big moment—a dance or an eve- ning performance. March out into the night at the fire drill signal. Climb again the stairs to second or third or fourth hall. And at the eleventh stroke of the tower clock, experience lights out. THIS, THEN. IS KUTZTOWN. keystonia staff FEATURE EDITOR ASSOCIATES CLASS EDITOR ASSOCIATES SPORTS EDITOR ASSOCIATES ART EDITOR ASSOCIATES PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR ASSOCIATE ADVERTISING EDITOR ASSOCIATES Margaret Gabel Phyllis Becker Kathleon Hainos Donald Workhoisor John Boyd Donald Strausburger Marilyn Ward Marjorie Fluck Patricia Trumbauer John Stutzman Gladys Stoudt George Skeeba Robert Doney Peter Bugda William McHale Alfred Bashore William Galgon John Shoetz Edward Smith Theodore Scarpino rHE STAFF of the 1950 KEYSTONIA wishes to dedicate this edition of the yearbook to the students of our college. We feel that the student body IS the college and on it depends, to a very large measure, whatever success the college enjoys. Without students who aspire for success scholastically, athletically, and socially, our college could not maintain its enviable reputation among the teachers colleges of our State. Without students who have high ideals of conduct, loyalty, and co- operation, our college could not have realized so worthy a past or could not face so promising a future. If this loyalty and co-operation, these high ideals of scholarship and conduct are carried over into the teaching profession, we can look with con- fidence to the future of education and citizenship in our great Commonwealth. It is with a feeling of pride and satisfaction, therefore, that we dedicate the 1950 KEYSTONIA to the student body. .....our dedication in memoriam rHE faculty and student body note with deep regret the pass- ing of Dr. James S. Grim who died at the Reading Hospital on May 18, 1949. Dr. Grim joined the faculty of his Alma Mater in 1899 and served for a period of forty-five years. He was head of the depart- ment of science. In 1942 he retired after forty-three years of serv- ice, but he was called back for an additional two years of service during the war emergency. Dr. Grim was the author of a book on birds and another on agriculture which are used in many high schools. He loved the out- doors and was a specialist on trees. His friendship and spirit of service will always remain in the minds and hearts of those who know him. rHE faculty and student body note with regret the passing of Mr. Roy Reimert on January 7, 1950. Mr. Reimert served the college in the capacity of watchman and maintenance worker for a period of twenty-six years. His cheerful smile and friendly greeting will long be remem- bered by those who knew him. our alma mater Where stately trees are bending, Where Nature's glories shine, And loveliness unending In beauty rare combine, There rise the Kutztown towers, And there the College stands, The well-spring of our powers— The shrine our love commands. About her happy hall-ways And we will ever love her Our fondest memories cling, And live to spread her fame; Of days that we shall always Our lives shall add new lustre In joyous rapture sing: Unto her glorious name; Firm as a keystone they stand, As guardians of her new day Round which we shared life's span. Our work will ever be, She taught the source of all good: To labor so that she may Who serves God must serve man. Achieve her destiny. Clyde •'. Lytle . . .who serves God, must serve man inistration FRANCIS B. HAAS Pd.D., LLD. Superintendent of Public Instruction the message of our president GREETINGS TO THE CLASS OF 1950 OUR class came to the campus at the close of id World War II and completed the requirements y for the bacca'aureate deqree during a world armistice which has existed since the shooting war end- ed. A cold war has annoyed the nations during your entire college career and the end of it is not yet in sight. During the past five years the nations have been exploring the world situation to determine the price of peace. During this same time there has developed an armament race which involves supersonic planes, bacteriological weapons, and cosmic death rays, in addition to the dreaded atomic bomb. Could it be possible that you and I are standing at the threshhold of another struggle to determine the nature of human freedom and of peace in the world? It is alleged that wars begin in the minds of men. It is also alleged that if man's desire for peace is stronger than his desire for war, peace will obtain. If these premises are valid, your role and my role as teachers, small as our roles may be, would point to the need for the teaching of peace. We must teach our generation in such a way that its interests, motives, and attitudes suggest peace and abhor war. The Prince of Peace directed us to Go teach all nations . . . Such a challenge is indeed intriguing if human survival interests us. Let us go then and teach peace and the pursuits of peace. The trustees, the faculty, and the alumni join me in congratulating you upon your graduation as teachers while the calendar stands at the half century mark and the possibilities obtain for you to see the year 2000. Looking into the future, as Tennyson did in Locksley Hall, we hope that the years ahead, by your help, may indeed be years when the war drums throbbed no longer and the battle- flags were furled in the Parliament of man, the Federation of the world. Your Alma Mater wishes for you a happy and successful career. QUINCY A. W. ROHRBACH, '12 President May I, 1950 BOARD OF TRUSTEES MR. GEORGE W. GILES ....................................... . These students are enrolled in the curriculums of Liberal Arts, Agriculture, Architecture, and Engineering. For all men with the exception of veterans of World War II, this program includes participation in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. After com- pleting their freshman year at Kutztown, these students hope to continue their studies on the State College campus. 26 FRESHMAN CLASS They gave us maroon and white dinks and ties, a copy of The Key, a load of good wishes and we were college freshmen. We spent the first week making acquain- tances and attending the various parties, hikes, and mixers which the upperclassmen showered upon us. Frosh customs took the limelight all during the football season. After some time, we met to nominate candidates for class offices. We also began laying plans for our Eight Ball Dance which was held for all the college in late January. Our class was the first to see a change from the veteran-dominated class, for we were composed largely of younq men and women from the graduating classes of last year. Our very large membership helped to make this the peak year in college enrollment. As we look forward to the next three years, we cannot help but feel that we are striving to become fully prepared to take our places in the teaching profession. OFFICERS Prosldont ............... Martin Brooks Secretary .. ......... Cathleen Clymer Vico-Presidont John Flynn Treasurer ............ Samuel Pennybackor 27 SOPHOMORE CLASS The sophomore class represents a typical twentieth-century group of American college students. The group boasts leadership not in one phase of college activity, but in all the many aspects of college life—scholarship, art, athletics, dramatics, journalism, and music. We have our lighter side when that is the order of the day, but we are serious in nature because we fully realize the demands our profession makes of us. We began our second year with these things in mind and a determination to make this a year full of the same satisfactions which we experienced in the past. Our main duty was to act as members of the customs committee to keep the freshmen in line. This we did by the formation of our tribunal which met weekly to try customs violators and to deal out punishment to them. Through the efforts of this group, cus- toms were more successful this year than in any other year since the post-war period. This year we also sponsored the Valentine Dance. In all our pursuits, we are preparing to take our places in the teaching field. During the next two years, we will undertake specialization in a particular field and our practice teaching. We will use these experiences to develop professional know- ledge and teaching techniques. OFFICERS President . Salvatoro Aita Secretary ..... Doris Bright Vice-President Thomas Rosica Treasurer Louiso Ruff JUNIOR CLASS As our third year at Kutztown draws to a close we can look back with a feeling of satisfaction. The members of the class have cooperated enthusiastically to make each undertaking worthwhile. Our major contribution to the social calendar was the annual Junior Prom, which had as its theme a Penthouse Party amid a backdrop de- picting the New York skyline. In addition to the social events, we were active in the academic and social affairs of the college. Ahead of us lies the most important phase of our college career. For the first time our will be the roll of teacher; for the first time we will be called upon to apply the teaching techniques emphasized in our education courses. OFFICERS President Lawroncc Mulligan Secretary Kathleen Haines Vice-President Lawrence Handy Treasurer Arlone Kachlino GREETINGS FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION rHE Alumni Association congratulates your action in developing the 1950 Keystonia around the theme This is Kutztown in which you portray campus life. May you discover many Acres of Diamonds in Kutztown's own backyard. The College has earned a glorious past as is attested by the 8505 students the institution has graduated and by the achievements of these men and women in our own and other lands. They have made an enviable record. A teacher training institu- tion with a plan is like the flight of an airplane which is following a radio beam. The leadership and cooperation of the boards of trustees, the presidents, the faculties and the student bodies have resulted in building a better and better college. They deserve our appreciation and thanks. Today the college is enjoying the respect of sister colleges and is maintaining a high standing as is shown by the fact that it is accredited by the American Associa- tion of Colleges for Teacher Education, by the Middle States Association of Colleges, and by the American Medical Association. As alumni we feel a continuing responsibility for undergirding the program of teacher education and for supporting the plans for advancing the program at Kutz- town with unswerving loyalty and undiminishing zeal. As president of the Alumni Association I am pleased to pay high respects to the President of the College for his educational leadership, to the faculty for their loyal support in advancing the program, and to the Board of Trustees for their vision, courage, and guidance in building a better College. We pledge the fullest coopera- tion in our joint endeavor to realize the great potentialities of the future of Kutztown State Teachers College. Wishing each and every one of you abundant success, I am Sincerely yours, C. F. Seidel '08 President of the Alumni Association 30 TO THE CLASS OF 1950: It seems only yesterday that we were freshmen embarking upon this great educa- tional venture. Many things have transpired in the four years we have been here; many obstacles wore met and conquered. And on the eve of our graduation, the greatest problem is facing us. We have completed our college education but what we do with it is our problem. The great educational system of our country is calling us. Most of our class will become a part of it in its various phases. Some will meet the demand in the elemen- tary and secondary fields, while others will take their places as school librarians and art supervisors. The courses we have studied while in college have aimed to prepare us for these fields, and our social activities have been directed to aid us in becoming working parts of our community. The foundation has been laid for us during our college years. When we enter our teaching positions, the future is in our hands. We must meet with great deter- mination the demands which are made upon us. We must approach our work with a broad mind, a will to cooperate, and a desire to give our utmost. With our college preparation and with these things in mind, success is inevitable. For my fellow class members, I wish sincere happiness. I hope, too, that we may all give our best to a truly great profession. Donald A. Shcaffer, Class President 31 ELAINE M. ALSPACH 218 South Warron Stroot, Orwigsburg, Pa. Men said as they saw its beauty, It shall never know decay. Great is thy skill, O builder: Thy fame shall endure for aye. A teacher builded a temple With loving and infinite caro, Planning each arch with patience, Laying each stone with prayer. None praised her unceasing efforts None knew of her wondrous plan, For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the builder's temple, Crumbled into the dust; Low lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust. But the temple the teacher builded Will last while the ages roll, For that beautiful unseen temple Is a child's immortal soul. 77 w mil 78 ■■■■■80 m ■82 The Haunted Post Office Our Groucho and his Gal Majoring in water therapy for the next six weeks Little K-town 83 84 Trimming the tree Up in the Air tivities STUDENT ACTIVITY BOARD The Student Activity Board is composed of representatives from each class. Adolf 103 orts FOOTBALL On September 24, 1949, the Golden Avalanche opened what proved to be the most outstanding of- fensive season in its history, averaging 25 points for each game. The opening game of the season was played at home with Shippensburg STC a very close match for the Patton-men. Although his players exhibited excellent co-operation and dexterity, the power and strength of the Shippensburg team held them to a 6-6 score. Entering the second game of the season, the maroon and gold was handicapped by the absence of its coach who was in the hospital because of a practice injury. Affer placing Win for Patton and Win for the Coach signs on the sidelines, the boys went into the game and paid the seasons highest price in cas- ualties for victory. During the several months that followed players with casts and crutches symbolized the 43-13 Cheyney victory. On the following Saturday the KSTC football squad traveled to Mansfield STC and defeated their antagonist by a score of 12-6. This was a very hot day for football, and the ability of substituting players and keeping a fresh team in the game proved to be an important factor in winning this game. Again the Kutztownians played away and were victorious in defeating Montclair STC 38-6. The poten- tial reserves of coach Patton's team showed great possibilities by outstanding plays. Invading Trenton the Golden Avalanche met opposition that was some-what of an alley cat fashion. Unsportsmanlike conduct resulted in disqualification of several players from both sides. Our team scored the greatest victory in the history of Kutztown STC by defeating Trenton STC 58-0. The ball was carried across the opposing teams goal-line nine times. Nine different players made touchdowns, including a lineman who filled his life-long ambition by assum- ing fullback position and scoring. Kutztown took its first drubbing for the season from the Bloomsburg husk- ies, and was left with the short end of a 27-14 score. Partially because of the beating our boys took the previous week and the rough time Millersville gave them last year, our boys tallied a fast score. The coach chose to give his inexperienced 106 players a tryout on the gridiron. Almost all of the subs played during this game and helped defeat Millers- ville STC 27-13. The final game of the season was played in the rain at Rider College. The Kutztown team throughout the game outplayed, outclassed, and outfumbled the Rider team, only to lose with a score of 27-13. After the closing game, coach Patton sponsored a dinner for his team, honoring his second and third squad (as Mr. Patton said, The boys who were pushed around all year by the first squad ). The boys of the first squad served as cooks, cook's helpers, waiters, and dishwashers. After the dinner the boys sang solos, duets, and barber-shop harmonies accompanied by accordionist Joseph Rinaldi. During this banquet the team voted Lawrence Motkowski the most valuable graduating player, Will- iam Wolff and Lawrence Motkowski co-captains for the year, Frank Morello the most valuable undergrad- uate player, and Leonard Varacallo the most valuable freshman player. On November 19 the Student Co-operative Association sponsored a banquet in honor of the foot- ball team. Mr. John Ox DaGrossa, former Head Football Coach at Holy Cross and present Boxing Commissioner for Pennsylvania, was guest speaker. Awards were presented to players and managers. These awards are: Certificate or the letter K , sweater with K , medallian, and gold football. These awards were presented depending on the number of quarters played and the number of years of participation. Among this year's graduates are backfield stars—Lawrence Motkowski, Brooke Shugars, and William Wolff; linemen—Joseph Catanzaro, Ira Fake, Richard Fister, and Paul Toth; four-year manager, John Sheetz. SHIPPENSBURG STC 6 KUTZTOWN STC 6 CHEYNEY STC 13 KUTZTOWN STC 43 MANSFIELD STC 6 KUTZTOWN STC 12 MONTCLAIR STC 6 KUTZTOWN STC 38 TRENTON STC 0 KUTZTOWN STC 58 BLOOMSBURG STC 27 KUTZTOWN STC 14 MILLERSVILLE STC 13 KUTZTOWN STC 27 RIDER COLLEGE 27 KUTZTOWN STC 13 BASKETBALL Although the varsity basketball team was not victorious in all of its games, the team exhibited the high degree of co-operation essential to all sportsmen. The skill with which the players evaded their opponents to reach the basket kept the spectators alert throughout the entire season. Starting the '49-'50 season, the Golden Avalanche downed the Cheyney five by a close score of 45 to 44. During the first half Cheyney steadily increased its score to a six-point lead; however, during the second half Kutztown exaltedly raced ahead to take the game. For the first game of the season played on foreign soil, the Golden Avalanche experienced slight diffi- culty in getting started. Lagging by one point at the half and giving up only three points during the third quarter, Kutztown STC took the lead and maintained it throughout the remainder of the game, defeating Trenton 57-49. A large crowd followed the Bloomsburg huskies as they came to Kutztown to compete with their age- old rivals. The Golden Avalanche had too much scoring power for the huskies and swept steadily to a 49- 42 victory. After three consecutive victories the Golden Avalanche went to West Chester where they were unable to chip the edge that the physical education quintet held. During the last quarter, West Chester increased their lead from 34 to 29 third quarter margin to a 56-32 defeat. During the week before final semester exams, the Golden Avalanche stopped dribbling and started cramming; consequently, they took their worst beating of the year from Millersville, 67 to 37. The evening before the second semester started, Kutztown STC was once more beaten, this time by Shippensburg, who came to Kutztown and left with victorious honors, 71 to 59. The result of West Chester's return engagement was somewhat the same as the previous one, with the physical education boys taking the game 63-43. Unable to regain its winning stride when met on East Stroudsburg's court, the Golden Avalanche was forced to bow to a 59-42 score. Leading all the way and staving off a desperate fourth quarter rally by Trenton, the Avalanche wound up the event by downing its opponents 74 to 57. The Cheyney five were no match for the onslaught of the Kutztown quintet who, with a 19-12 lead at the quarter, surged to 39-16 at halftime, then turned the game over to the subs who played almost the entire last half, downing Cheyney 61-27 in the third quarter, and crushing them 74 to 34 at the final whistle. 108 After a hard week of practice, the Golden Avalanche, determined to avenge the previous defeat, met the Millersville quintet for the encore. Lagging by only five points during the final quarter, the Avalanche was unable to land their desperation shots and slumped to a 52-40 final score. The Golden Avalanche got off to an early start and raced to an 8-0 lead before the huskies got ahead, tying the game at the end of the quarter. The second quarter went nip-and-tuck with Bloomsburg taking the lead 25 to 22 at intermission. After the half the Golden Avalanche was unable to regain its starting stride, and what was an impressive beginning became a decisive defeat. Kutztown State Teachers faltered during the first quarter, tied Stroudsburg in points during the sec- ond, gained one point in the third, and fell short in the fourth, bowing 44 to 41. For the final game of the season Kutztown State Teachers College played at Shippensburg. Because of the overall height of their opponents the Risley-men were rarely able to recover the ball on the rebound; this fact resulted in a 67 to 49 Shippensburg conquest. Graduating this year is William Rutkowski who played four years of varsity basketball. For his participa- tion in this sport Rutkowski received the following awards: letter, sweater, medallion, and, for his final year, a gold award. After being defeated in the first series against Rider College, 5-4, the Golden Avalanche's Racqueteers won three consecutive victories against Millersville State Teachers College, 3-6, East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, 3-6, and Millersville State Teachers College, 4-5. After these successful displays of power, Kutztown was defeated again by Rider College, 7-2; but the Avalanche's Racqueteers came back to win the next series from Lebanon Valley College, 4-5. The last tennis series, against Trenton State Teachers College, ended in a 7-2 defeat for Kutztown. A previous series against East Stroudsburg State Teachers College with Kutztown leading 0-5 was postponed because of rain. These men played their last games for Kutztown State Teachers College in 1949: Roland Shilladay, James Zweizig, Richard Smith, Cyril Farrelly, and Richart Bittle.
