At this point in our lives, we are all facing our futures. ln order to see where our futures will take us, we first need to consider who we are. This is the time when we recognize our individualism and discover indepen- dence. Over the years, each of us has developed into unique personalities with particular values and distinct goals. Because we have grown into our own people, we should consider the influences which have made us who we are today. When we first came together as a class, we knew only our families and the lessons from home. At school it became necessary to get to know and co-operate with our classmates. We began to devel- op ideas about people and relationships. We grew close to special friends who, during both fun and serious times, enriched our lives. In the classroom, our teachers taught us the facts and ideas which all improve our lives. This combination of influences changed our self-images and our points of view on the outside world. As we have grown older, we have specialized these images and views to suit our personal needs. This had made us individuals. As we go onto the next stage of our lives, to face whatever our futures hold, we will each do it on our own. But we will always have the pieces of ourselves which Kutztown Area High School and the Class of 1988 have formed. These pieces fit together to make special and unique people who probably would have turned out differently. Sara Hall '88 Dedication The Kutztown Area High School is proud to dedicate its 1988 Yearbook to an outstanding teacher - Richard C. Gougler. After graduation from Muhlenberg College, Mr. Gougler began his teaching career at Kutz- town in 1951. During his 37 years here, he has taught Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Senior Math, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and English. But Mr. Gougler was not just a good teacher, he was also in- volved in many plays and musicals put on by KAHS students. During his first year of teaching he organized the Curtain Callers , a group who performed the play Our Hearts Were Young And Gay. ln 1952, under Mr. Gougler's direction, they performed Are We Dressingfor an assembly and To The Lovely Mar- garet on radio. For 27 years Mr. Gougler was continually involved with the plays and musicals. Some years, he not only directed but also wrote the plays. Some of his achievements include: The Goddess, 1956, The Giddio, 1960, Mavis and the Moon Man, 1961, One Extra Swigg, 1965, and The Giddio Will, 1973. His last major productions were in 1977 when he directed the musical Bye, Bye Birdie and the play lfA Man Answers. He kept involved with dramatics though by directing last year's Faculty Variety Show and assisting in the Senior Variety Show. Mr. C.ougler's other activities in- cluded advisor for the Projection Club from 1956 until 1980, faculty manager of music, Senior Class advi- sor and Senior Dean. During most of his tenure he was also head of the Mathematics Department. Mr. Gougler retired in january. We, his students, his friends and his fellow workers, hope his retirement will be as full and rewarding as the years he spent at KAHS. Randi arrived in New York City on August 19, 1987. During her stay in the United States, Randi will reside with Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Stump. Randi assumed that all cities in the United States would be like New York City, consequently she was surprised that the buildings in Kutz- town were so old fashioned . Another thing that impressed Randi is our spirit. This is the first time she has seen cheerleaders! Back in Denmark they do not take athletic competitions so seriously, and it is not as important to win every game. Randi enjoyed playing field hockey here at Kutztown. She is currently the manager of the girls basketball team and plans to try out for the softball team in the spring. Randi also sings in the chorus. ln Denmark Randi is active in soccer and handball. Randi's favorite class here is English because Mr. Shaw makes the class fun . Besides English Randi can Speak Danish, French and German. When Randi goes back to Denmark, she is thinking about becoming a hair dresser. Because she enjoys traveling, she is sure she will visit the United States again. Randi misses her family and her dog King. She also occasionally gets hungry for some dark bread, but she can compensate for this by munch- ing on pizza or spaghetti. All in all, Randi feels that it is great to be here. Her time up till now was good and she hopes the rest of the time she is here will be just as good! Ralph Schaefer arrived in the United States on August 21, 1987. Ralph is an exchange student involved in the American International Student Program. With this program Ralph has already seen Florida and is planning to visit other places, in- cluding Washington. Seventeen year old Ralph misses his family, friends and es- pecially his dog Felix. While living in Pennsylvania, Ralph is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Bohn who live on Noble Street. Ralph is fluent in German, French, Spanish, English and stud- ied Latin. Ralph enjoys his English class at Kutztown, and be- cause of his prior experience, he finds it easy. Ralph also understands a little of the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect. Ralph is active in many sports. He enjoyed participating on the Kutztown Area High School soccer team. He plans to try out for the tennis team because tennis is his favorite sport. Ralph also likes to play volleyball and ping-pong. This is the second time Ralph has left his home in Heidel- berg, Germany to come to the United States. He is sure that he will be back for a third taste of life here. When Ralph returns home on july 1, 1988, he has to finish two more years of high school. After attending college Ralph is not sure whether he will follow a career in business or sports medicine. Posting an undefeated pre-sea- son, they handed Coach Hel- man her 100th hame win on September 4 with a shutout over Governor Mifflin. An un- expected loss to Fleetwood sparked the girls to a record of 14 goals over Brandywine. Un- fortunately the Cougars couldn't handle Fleetwood or Hamburg and missed the chance for the wildcard play- offs. Further honors were given to the team when senior de- fense leaders Sue Lesher and Tracie Schwoyer and junior Marci Grossman were voted to the Division 3 All-Star Team.
