Since 1952, when he was hired to teach history and physics until 1978 when he took a sabbatical leave, Mr. Charles Angstadt has been involved in many things. He served as Senior Class Advisor, Science and Photography Club Advisor and as Parliamentarian. Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Angstadt at- tended Kutztown State College. Later he re- ceived his Masters Degree from Lehigh Universi- ty. He now enjoys finishing antiques in his spare time. Mr. Angstadt is not only a teacher. He is knowledgeable in many different aspects of life. Through his various philosophies and unique ways of applying physics, he made his students think. He was a dedicated teacher, interested in the student as a person. His students knew that, and held him in deep respect. Although Mr. Angstadt is very independent and says what he thinks, he is a great teacher for all age groups, and by all means a teacher who stands among the best. Mr. Angstadt leads an active and interesting retirement along with his wife, Irma. Mr. Sngstadt is seen here seated in a Chippendale chair which he built himself. Beside him stands a tilt top table which he also constructed. Mr. Angstadt's hobby is refinishing antiques for himself and other people as well. The years ahead will most certainly belones of rapid change for our entire society. Hopefully, your years in the Kutztown Area School District have helped you to acquire the tools to succeed in our environment of changey Our track record in prior years has been good. We have some evi- dence that most of our graduates do succeed in their chosen ways of life. The tradition of our schools for over one hundred years, has been one of excellence. The Cou- gar Trail promises success to those who are willing to ride its rocky road. L9 JOHN BUTLER Dear Seniors, As you read this you are only a few days away from commence- ment. As your school nurse she takes care of such things as your height and weight. She runs the annual eye and ear check-ups and assists Dr. Robertson in making sure you are ready for your favor- ite sport. Whenever you're feeling under the weather, its nice to know someone is there who cares. 22 FACULTY Can you imagine what our school would be like without peo- ple to care for it? Luckily, there are many capable people who keep our building clean and our personnel healthy. Lester Meek or- ganizes maintenance while Lester Kerchner and his staff of custo- dians make sure K.A.H.S. is al- ways clean and sparkling. Also helping to keep us healthy are our wonderful cooks. They work con- tinuously through all four lunches, and Berlye Carl, as cafeteria man- ager, makes sure all our meals are well balanced and nutritious. SENIORS 51 POISE, PERSON ALITY, PROMISE DEBBIE, OUR JUNIOR MISS DEBORAH WALKER On the evening of October 6, 1979, Debbie Walker represented KAHS as our Junior Miss. Prior to the pageant she was interviewed, and evaluated on her scholastic achievement. The girls were also judged on youth fitness, poise, appearance, and talent. Debbie looked stunning on stage as she per- formed her self-choreographed dance to The Music and the Mirror from the broadway show A Chorus Line. After a brief intermission, the junior miss candidates dazzled the audience with a breath-taking evening gown competition. Deb- bie displayed her good taste with an exquisite maroon gown, very much to the audience's ap- proval. I was very honored to represent KAHS, said Deb. It was an experience l'll never for- get. Debbie Walker is a multi-talented person, and we the members of KAHS, should feel honored at having her as a classmate and friend. 52 SENIORS rg Nb ff ,Al lt all fit in here before ,A 95-9 bk nderclassm en . . . ki V.. y try, Q W- S' 1 4 09 N my W . This year, with more spirit than ever, the Kutztown Cougar Band is following the Cougar. Trail. The Marching Band performed under hot, rainy, and muddy conditions to show its dynamic support for the football team. They conducted themselves with precision and excel- lence at the many parades and competitions, thus earning awards of prestige and an outstanding reputation. The Concert and Marching Bands, under the direction of Mr. Rich- ard Huyett and assisted by Mr. Daniel Drew, are anxiously awaiting their trip to Virginia where they will compete for national honors. All those long hours of tedious practice are a tribute to all who appreciate the musical excellence that the Cougar Band displays. i '4 ' iii 2:1 ww 'T 4 M 4.9 fx f 'Ui 2- 1, ' L IQ- 19,2 C' .il 'I Y p, if 1 ' ,Q 'Qi J' 'x Aff 4 f - ii fl' E Q. Freshman Liz Sanders had an out- standing season, featuring a third at the Muhlenberg Invitational, and an eleventh in the County Confer- ence Run. BOYS' BASKETB LL The 1979-1980 Cougar basketball season proved to be very exciting and successful. Led by coaches Art Luptowski and Bob Freed and seniors Mitch Bond, Ken Loose, Scott Jack, and Mark Hershberger along with the rest of the team thrilled the fans with victories over rivals Fleetwood and Brandywine. After finishing the first half of league play with 6-3 record, the team hustled to eight straight wins in the second half. The last game of the regular season was against Daniel Boone for the second half championship. The Cougars lost a heart breaker, but ended up in second place in section Il at the Berks County League with a 14-4 record. The team ended with an overall record of 16-9. Even though the team will be losing four seniors, including high scorer Mark Hershberger, next year's team will be a contender and continue Kutztown's tradi- tion on winning basketball. Mini-courses play a major part in the students' curriculum at Kutztown. The Pennsylvania Department of Education conducts an Educa- tional Quality Assessment of all school districts in Pennsylvania. The test are given to fifth, eighth, and eleventh graders. The purpose of the tests is to determine how youngsters are doing in basic skills areas and social areas. Our youngsters took these tests last April. The results of the test compare us to school districts of our size and type and also compare us to all school districts in Pennsyl- vania. We can all be proud of the results of these tests. The evidence is that education is alive and thriv- ing in the 100 square miles that encompasses the Kutzgown Area School District. CLASS OF 1980 International Scars The winter of 79-80, will always be scarred with the memory of the plight of the fifty Americans held captive in the U.S. Embassy in Teh- ran. The radical students who siezed the hostages promised re- lease of the prisoners only in ex- change for the ex-shah of Iran. The militants made it clear that they would only obey their revolution- ary leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who rose to power in Iran after the deposition of the shah. Seniors Get The Draft What will our seniors be doing after high school? This year, an involuntary alternative may be the Army, Navy or Air Force. lt is very probable that the draft will be back once more. President Carter, reacting to tense international situ- ations has asked for the registra- tion of males and possibly females between the ages of eighteen and twenty. All are nervous about the final decision. When will it start, and when will it end? Olympic Honors This was the year of the XIII Olympic Games and the honor of hosting the games was brought to Lake Placid, New York. Although the event got off to a rough start, with transportation problems for spectators, and unseasonal weath- er problems for contestants, things straightened out soon after the opening ceremonies and the com- petition became intense and excit- Ing. The Americans were well repre- sented in several events, not the least of which was the ice hockey competition. After an amazing 4-3 upset over the favored Russian team, our young skaters went on to the final 4-2 victory over Finland winning them the gold medal. This marked a major triumph for the Americans who had only won one other gold medal in hockey during the 1960 games at Squaw Valley. Eric Heiden completed a one- man ice capades at the Winter Olympics and kept American pride bursting by winning five gold med- als in speed skating. The 21-year- old native of Madison, Wisconsin became the first athlete ever to win five gold medals in Winter Olympic competition. Heiden swept the 500, 1000, 1500, 5000, and 10,000 meter events. Mr. Reidel along with other sporting facul- ty brave the cold weather and students' marksmanship at the band carnival spon- sored by the Band Wagon. Band Sponsors Carnival One of the biggest and most fun of the Band Wagon money raising projects this year was the Carnival. Early last Fall the parking lot was cleared and the various concession and game stands set up. There was a raffle with the big prize. Busin- esses from Kutztown donated their items for prizes as well. The largest crowd pleaser was the dunking booth. Who could resist trying to dunk their favorite teacher! Mr. Breininger, Mr. Reidel, Mr. Huyett, Mr. Drew, and Mr. Darion were the brave souls who took to the water, all for the benefit of the band. Students weren't the only ones trying to dunk the K.A.H.S. faculty. In the photo at the left, Mr. Drew tries his skill at dunking fellow faculty. Those kids are dressed in suits and ties and pretty dresses. The Answer was the Winter Dance. It is the only semi-formal affair at K.A.H.S. The Winter Dance was catered by the Fancy Pantry and The Fairer Sexi' sup- plied the music. Everybody had a good time. The food was great, the music inspiring, and the conversa- tion lively. Everybody left the dance with a smile on his face. The Midas Touch This year the rush was on for gold. Prices had been soaring to heights never imagined before. The week started with Come as you are day on Monday. Students came to school dressed in their fa- vorite night clothes. Tuesday was Hat Day when students dressed in unusual and humorous head gear. Wednesday, the 13th, was Teacher Dress-up Day. Students came outfitted in the style of dress of their favorite or least favorite teacher. Sweetheart Day was Thursday, or course, Valentine's Day. Anyone who had a special friend or would have liked to have a special friend could send that person a carnation as a symbol of their feelings. A pep rally was scheduled later in the day with teachers and students competing against each other in a farce on the Olympics. The week was highlight- ed by Olympic Day on Friday. Everyone wore the attire of their favorite Olympic event. Spirit was alive at Kutztown all week.
