We challenge you, the members of the class of 1954, to apply your knowledge so as to pre- serve and improve our demo- cratic way of life for present and future generations. May you find success, happi- ness, and satisfaction along the road of life. The Kutztown School Board DlRECTORS A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1954: Many of you have anxiously been look- ing forward to your senior year and to your graduation which completes your for- mal high school education. There is a very close analogy between the sea captain who embarks upon a voy- age without destination or compass and the student who embarks upon adult life with no considered goals in mind. Such a student is,moving without chart and com- pass toward no consciously defined port or goal. Goals and values are essential to intelligent and purposeful living. l trust that your high school training will have given you a foundation of experi- ences which will help you make wise de- cisions as you journey along life's way in attaining your goals. Your high school has tried to give you an opportunity for the development toward a well rounded life of effective service and enriched by the wise use of leisure time. To you, the Class of 1954, I extend my best wishes and may your graduation mark the beginning of a happy and suc- cessful life. L. MERLIN STAUFFER A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1954: The year 1954 is, and always will re- main, an important year in your life. Grad- uation marks the commencement of a new life for you. I challenge you to make it a successful and happy one. While you were students in the Kutztown Schools it was our obligation to inculcate into your hearts and minds those moral and spiritual values so important in our American heritage. We have done our best in this task. lt is now your task to carry forth these ideals and use them to make life worthwhile. May you find success and happiness along the road of life. Travel this road with confidence and high expectancy. You will meet success if you play fair with your fel- low man, have faith in God, and remember that people, not obiects or causes, are the most important things you will meet along the way. My personal good wishes for health and happiness go with you. Come back to visit with us whenever possible. We will always remain interested in you and be happy to greet you. PAUL C. Composer Bottle washer IT'S BEEN A LONG LONG TIME August 5, 1964 Dear Diary, Oh, it's good to be home again! The West is wonderful and excit- ing, but good old Kutztown is even better. Now that I have time again l'll tell you about my trip to the West and the interesting people I met. I stayed at the Bar K-town '54 Ranch operated by Doris Rohr- bach, Dolores Roth, and Barbara Althouse. The cow-hands who explained the work on the ranch and took us with them to do their chores included Robert Tex Smith, Mary DeLong, Dolores Doll, Walter Heffner, Norman Keller, and Carl Wisser. We had some excitement one day -when Shirley Schaeffer and Geraldine Dreibelbis reported that some of their best cattle had been stolen. Everything was in an uproar until Gail Sheriff Moyer and his able posse-Allen There they are Labe, Ray Get 'em Leslie, Edna I'lI shoot Reidenhour, and Lee l'll-bury-em Youse came along and in a month had the cattle stealers all rounded up. l've heard that Fay Dimples Bieber was at the head of the gang. Her able accomplices included Jay Gruesome Lewie Boyer and Gene Dead-eye Miller. Supper was served each evening in true Western style with Richard Carl as chief chef. His chuck wagon staff included Charles Gehris, Clayton Lindenmuth, Mary Miller, Sandra M. Moyer, and Carroll Sim- mons. Dinner music was provided by a iug band led by Russell Miller. The Jugsters were Warren Baver, Kermit Derr, and Stuart Diener. Barbara and Patricia Epting were the featured yodeling stars. Each morning before breakfast an exhibition was given by the famous Flap-iack Flippers, Ernest Greiss, Willis Henry, Kenneth Kunkle, Denton Schroeder, and Charles Salderich. The management treated us to a day at the circus. Boyl What a time we had. Upon arriving we were shocked to see Randall Moore crawling under the fence to escape the ticket man. The first noise we heard were the barkers Mac Eidle, Paul Read- inger, and 'Neil Hohl. Since the big act was about to begin we paused only one moment to buy o cake from Sylvia Eckert, and then proceeded to the big-show. Jay Werley, the ringmaster, opened the show with the great tumbling team, 2 Quarts and a Pint Janice Fabian, Madge Kline, and Barbara Focht. Next we were thrilled by the performance of Shirley Danner, Theresa Blatt, and Lila Pauley on the Flying Trapeze. Nevin Bozo Arndt and Judy Bonzo Breinig really had us roaring during their comedy act. James Greena- walt swallowed a few swords, followed by Dorothy Fink and Elaine George eating fire. By this time we were feeling rather hungry ourselves, so we bought some peanuts from Warren Schlottman and popcorn from Ray Schwoyer. We held our breaths as Leon Bergstresser and Patricia Oswalt walked the tight-rope. Aren't dogs clever? Ruth Sassaman and Gloria Schappell certainly have their pups trained well. And you should have seen Hilda Greenawalt, Joan Phillips, and Mildred Bechtel in the bare-back riding act! Just as Sandra A. Moyer was presenting her tamed lion, he be- came untamed and bit her hand. Doctorsl Doctors! There were none in the crowd so Louise Schmoyer and Richard Reichard were sum- moned to the scene. In two minutes they arrived-thanks to their able ambulance drivers, Charles Gilmore and David Ely. In no time at all her iniury was taken care of and the show went on! Mary Quillman, Eleanor Stauffer, Sylvia Steffey gave a thrilling performance atop an elephant. Larry Moyer directed the circus band in which Eleanor Borto, Leon- ard Stauffer, and Elaine Reber were the featured musicians. In conclusion there was a wrestling match between Ronald Bull- dog Moyer and Reynold Fido Reinert. Grace Sayer and Ethel Schofer were the referees. Barbara Donat, Elizabeth Wuchter, and Cora Ellen Haring were on hand in case of any deaths. Out of the big tent, we were again hungry so we bought some ice cream from Joanne Deisher. We also found out that Carolyne Bachman and Jane Adams make the most delicious pizza pie. Up the midway we stopped to see the fat ladies, Faye Grim and Roxanne Moyer. We couIdn't help ioining Jean Conrad and Roberta Greenawalt when we saw them as the laughing ladies. Ray Con- rath, the tall man, certainly made Eugene Yocum, the midget, look short. We had our picture drawn by Betty Trexler and then proceeded to hear Fred Schearer, Governor of Texas, speak. As Shirley Rohrbach and Doris Koehler peered into their Crystal Ball we were all assured of a prosperous future. As a stupendous climax to such an exciting day, we attended the stock-car races. Norman Wisser, Ronald Scheidt, and Thelma Rhode were competing for the SI,000,000,000 prize. Since they all came through alive, it was decided to split the money and name the three of them The Speed Demons of 'l964. Because we were all tired the next day, we decided to visit the new DeLong Business Institute in town. We were greeted by Eliza- beth Zuberka, receptionist, and were amazed to learn that Richard DeLong was the founder of this school. The professors are Clark Bossler, Irene Snyder, and Gerald Burkert. Some of the pupils further- ing their education there are Shirley Gaumer, Frederick Williams, and Ronald Werley. On the way back to the ranch we saw the queerest housel It seems Dorothy Silsdorf has recently built a bubble house. While cruising down the highway we found ourselves in the middle of a chase. We learned later that Fay Sanders and Eleanor Bieber, state troopers, had finally caught up with the get away car of Clarence Schumaker and Lowell Helfley. They have been accused of stealing clothes from the wash lines of some housewives. The housewives who reported this offense were Virginia Miller, Shirley Oswald, Jeanette Schmoyer and Clara Sechler. There were other complaints from women whose children were being sold bubble gum. It is believed that Schumaker and Hetlley are these bubble gum peddlers. The mothers who brought these charges are Marilyn Speer, Mary Stoudt, Shirley Lessig, and Heather James. Thinking that our excitement for the day was through, we re- turned to the ranch for a quiet evening. That dream was broken however, for when we arrived we were greeted by a tribe of Indians. Chief Dallas Never-miss O'Neil of the Cougar tribe was there to protest the making of a motion picture which was to be filmed on some of his land. Some of the warriors who accompanied him were Barry Dribble-fast Adam, Lee Sitting Bull Hertzog, John Gun um Keiser, and Donald Pivot Post Lesher. Fortunately Donald Losch, the producer of the movie, was on hand, and before they left the peace pipe was smoked. We were advised to get a good night's rest so that we'd be able to be on hand for the filming of the movie. So bright and early the next morning we were on the scene. We were introduced to the sound producer, Charles Leibensperger. Dolores Metzger and Marion Schroeder designed the costumes. We were lucky enough to be present when the great actor Gene Gressley appeared. We got his autograph and he introduced us to some of the other stars--Jean Adam, Eleanor Eckert, Joan Kern, and Shirley Trollinger. Having visited Hollywood, the town's marriage counselor, Estina Frey, had increased business. She even hired some extra help -Elaine Bailey, Shirley Scheirer, Arlene Rohrbach, and Eleonor Rahlff. While visiting the town we caught a glimpse of Mrs. Suzanne Miller Vanderbilt stepping from her Cadillac driven by Forrest Mengel. On our final day at the ranch we attended the Miss America contest. Susanne Dries was chosen by the 4 accomplished beauty contest iudges, David Grim, Dale Shafer, Charles Fetherolf, and William Kershner. A climax such as that was all we needed to assure ourselves we really had a wonderful trip to the West. But, dear Diary, Kutztown's the best! FLIRTATIOUS MOST BASHFUL CUTEST LATEST AND MOST PUNCTUAL THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS Once again our talented thespians presented a three-act comedy Meet Uncle Sally in the auditorium on the evenings of November I9 and 20. Under the noteworthy direction of Mrs. Laura L. Lannon the twelve appropriate characters turned out a star-studded performance. The K.H.S. Band rendered five selections under the direction of William S. Moyer. The cast, together with the large efficient technical staff, substan- tially increased the treasury by the gate receipts and the souvenir programs. The plot revolves around a collegian, Sally Sherwood, who is forced by the Blaynes to im- personate their rich middle-aged uncle, William Hawkins, after he canceled his visit at their home. Because of this rich uncle, Betty and Ben intended to make a lasting impression upon Bob and Elaine Durant, their sweethearts, and the Dur- ant's Aunt Dorinda. Numerous misunderstand- ings, confusions, and humorous incidents prevail throughout the play which concludes happily with four couples about to be married. After the last successful presentation of the play the members of the cast and technical staff climaxed the evening with an enioyable lunch at Kem p's Hotel. Janice Fabian .. Suzanne Miller . TAKE ME OUT TO As the '53-'54 term opened we found the males out on the soccer field strengthening their legs for those all important kicks. Mr. Shankweiler coached the team for the second year, and they ended their season with a record of nine wins and two losses. While all this was happening on the KHS soc- cer field, the females were practicing their drib- bling and passing on the KSTC hockey field. Coached for the first time by Miss Semmel, the Cougarettes finished at the close of the season in second place. After a week or two of rest the boys again got under way with their basketball practice. For the seventh year Mr. Silan coached the team. Our Cougars spent many hours on the hard- wood preparing themselves for the challenge made by the other schools in our league. Our first defeat came with the exhibition game against the KHS al-umni. We bowed out of the Central Division Championship when we lost two CHEERLEADERS-First Row: Barbara Focht, Suzanne Miller Cap tain, Patricia Leh. Second Row: Lorraine Dreibelbis, Carol Hau k Roxanne Moyer. THE BALL GAME games to Mount Penn. From the first game on November 24 until the last one on February 19, our team had a record of three losses and seven- teen wins. Good work, boys! Keeping up the morale of the team and the school were our peppy cheerleaders coached by Miss Semmel. They put in many hours of practice to synchronize their motions and really showed their precision on the floor. ln the gym after school, we found the girls' basketball team shooting and guarding. They ended in second place in their league with a five for eight record. As a climax to the season the seniors coached by Mr. Silan challenged the un- derclassmen led by Miss Semmel. The seniors walked away with the game. Next in the season were the baseball games. We broke the precedent and scheduled 14 games instead of l0. We had the best-dressed team in the county with a suit for home games and one for away. GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM-First Row: Diane Fenstermaker, Florence Heclxman, Edna Reidenhour, Patricia Leh. DON'T FENCE ME IN The Future Farmers of America is an organization for boys studying vocational agriculture in high school. The primary purpose of the organization is to develop agricultural leader- ship, co-operation, and citizenship. The F.F.A. at Kutztown High School was organized in 1942. Similarly the Future Homemakers of America is an organ- ization for girls in the Home Economics Curriculum. Its purpose is to promote better interest in home economics. Both of the clubs pool their resources in sponsoring an annual semi-formal which is the gala event of the year. They have fun nights, skating parties, and go on many interest- ing and educational trips. Each organization has a banquet to which they invite their parents. The F.F.A. has its in the form of a Father-Son Banquet, and the F.H.A. has a Mother- Daughter Banquet. The clubs are very active and are a fine preparation in their respective fields.
