S1gr1d Mar1elu1se Hoboy SIGRID HOBOY OUR GERMAN EXCHANGE STUDENT BECOMES FIRST HONORARY GRADUATE OF KUNKLE HIGH SCHOOL GERMAN EXCHANGE STUDENT I am a German Exchange Student and ome from the La wh1ch 1S 1n s a teacher 1n about 30 m1les I found an advert1sement of the exchange m the dally news and wrote my appl1cat1on to the Amer1can Consulate General 1n Mu n1ch I took a couple exam1nat1ons and had to get passport v1sa and many other papers In the last part of June I was pos1t1vely sure that I was one of the few who were chosen to the n1ce tr1p 1n July to the Umted States a dream got fulf1lled Then I got a letter from my host parents and Sunday July 17 1955 I left my home for one year I was golng on a ra1lroad to Bremen and July 19 157 Exchange Students left Germany w1th the M S Seven Seas We were 1n LeHarve France and Southhamp northern provmce of Bavar Southern Germany My father Bachhausen a l1ttle v1llage south of Nuremberg but I was not seas1ck After 11 days on the sh1p we were 1n Quebec one day and we ar r1ved Montreal on July 30 There we made a c1ty tour and 1n the n1ght we were on the ra1l road to Baltlmore I was for a few days 1n New W1ndsor fMaryland On August 3 I left Balt1more aga1n and was gomg alone one n1ght on the tra1n to Def1ance There were my host parents Mr and Mrs Henry Kunkle and then we were goxng to Kunkle I enjoyed my stay here at Kunkle very much and I want to thank the members of the Faculty the School Board the Students and the Commun1ty for the pleasant t1me I had fnfsrjwrv One of S1g1's spec1al opportu Slgl who celebrated her seven n1t1es was to travel w1th the Sen1ors teenth b1rthday wh1le w1th us has on thelr tr1p to Wash1ngton, D C our every good w1sh for a success New York and Nxagara Falls. Home catazq Today we the Seniors of 1956 have reached the goal toward which we have strived for twelve years GRADUATION DAY In the fall of 1945 sixteen brave children started their first year of scnool at Kunkle They were Edwin Wyrick Richard Traxler Colleen Stark Joanne Eberly Gale Landon David Surbey Nelson Rupp LeRoy Stantz Eva Barrett Pauline Kosier Nellie Leskow Arthur Stantz Mannette Stambaugh MaDonna Steffes Jo Ann Theobald and Shirley McIntosh Our teachers through the first eight grades were Mrs Stauffer for lst and Znd Mrs Stipe 3rd and 4th Mrs Oberlin 5th Miss Dury 6th Mr Gilcher 7th and Mr Schie home room teacher for the 8th grade We had other teachers that year In 1952 our Junior High Basketball team won the county tournament Boys playing on this team from our class were George Sitek Hal Whetro Ronnle Hennamen David Hamilton James Ball and Donald Baker Our coach was Mr Clyde Schie In 1953 twenty Freshmen entered the high school not knowing what was expected of them but willing to do their best We were initiated by the Sophomore Class Having survived that we felt as though we were really part of dear old K H S Our advisor was Mrs Anderson and the superintendent Mr Cornell During our Sophomore year we initiated the Freshmen Our business ventures were selling home made candy clothes hangers and ordering our class rings Our advisor was Mrs All1on and Mr Wichmanowski was superintendent also discovered our abilities in dramatics when we presented the Junior play This Ghost Business Our director was Mr Kolar who was also our class advisor Our biggest project of the year was the planning of the Junior Senior Banquet We finally arrived at the last year of high school last fall as Sen1ors We sold magazine subscriptions sponsored bake sales skating parties a box social and the Third Annual Mother and Daughter Banquet We have achieved compiling the year book of 1956 and had our part with the school paper The Echo The Senior Play Those Funny Brats was our last attempt in dra matics and the most successful We wish to thank Mrs Henry Kunkle for her untiring efforts as director of this comedy On April 29th we left on our Senior Trip visiting Washington D C New York City and Niagara Falls Our chaperones were Mrs All1on and Mrs Clayton Moore We the Senior Class of 56 wish to thank the people who helped make this trip possible Those of us who have been together for the twelve years are David Surbey Edwin Wyr1ck Colleen Stark Joanne Eberly Nellie Leskow MaDonna Steffes and Jo Ann Theobald During these years in school our teachers have worked with us en deavoring to help us meet the problems that will confront us with an education both in class and out and I m sure that in the future we'll re call much of this help and find use for many bits of knowledge gamed here atKHS 13 I i ' H rv ' .
