Q . -:NC Class Prophecy Shortly after graduation my health started fallmg me The doctor told me that the only cure for me was to move to Australta where the weather was better for my allment I didn t hke the whole xdea but xt was my only way out so I got a passport and headed for the lonely lsland My health did get somewhat better and after bemg there approxxmately a year I found a job as shepherd for a farmer Three years later my father wrote me he was planning to come and llve wlth me He stated 1n his letter that he was forced to sell hrs farm as the city councrl of Kunkle brought emment domam proceedmgs agamst h1m So ln due tlme I recelved a telegram tellmg me that my mother, father and llttle brother were wartlng for me to plck them up at the axrport fwe mzles from my establlshed res1dence Dad and I put what lxttle money we had left xnto sheep and cattle Our herds kept mcreasxng each year and I found It necessary to marry ln order that we mxght have more help m the famzly Th1s IS only an lntroductlon of the rest of my prophecy On May 19 1965 I recewed an xnvltatxon to the flfteenth anmversary of the Class of 1950 of whlch I was a member My wrfe was planmng on accompanylng me but just two days before I left she fell and broke her leg I had httle trouble m gettmg a passport and was soon on my way to the States l came by sh1p to Boston and from there I took a plane to the alrport two and one half miles north of what 15 now the old Kunkle Corners I arrwed here about 8 15 P M In the morning It had ram ed the mght before and the axr was st1ll full of refreshtng ozone Slnce xt was such a brlght mormng I decrded to walk to the mam part of town mstead of paying a taxi fare to cart me around About one half male from where I got out of the plane I saw the btggest Smclalr gasolme flllmg statron one could lay hxs eyes on Inside of the statxon there was a blg husky man whlch appeared to be the owner He had a butch haircut and was smoking a bxg wme soaked cigar Near the statron was a pretty whnte house wxth bxg plcture wmdows For an mstant I thought I knew the short blonde woman wlth unkept han- who was cookmg breakfast ln a washtub She seemed famll lar to me but my mmd was blank to such a rundown woman I was farrly ttred when I reached a factory called the Hendncks Shoe Company As I rapped on the door I xmmedzately recogmzed the former Oveta Smnth who was now the mother of s1x httle I-lendrlcks I-Ier husband Ray was close at hand and when he got me equlpped w1th a new paxr of shoes we dec1ded to go and vlslt the rest of my old classmates The flrst place we vrsxted was the Kmtner Khemlcal Korporatlon Here we found Marlon workmg on a magnet whmch he could carry ln hts pocket to attract good lookmg gtrls I-le explamed to us that he had been workmg on this for fourteen years -'le was stlll slngle ll .. u f . -v. . . Next we v1s1ted the Armbruster Candy K1tchen Thxs was no surprnse to me because Ruby had sent me several boxes of candy but because of such close censorshxp on letters between the two countrxes she could never tell me what Allan busxness was Our next stop was the VI yrlck Feed M111 I-lere we found Bob puttmg out the prlces of the day W heat was quoted at nineteen cents per bushel It was about noon so Ray and I went mto the Opdeycke Restaurant Here w found Roberta Chief cook and bottle washer She sure seemed contented at her work After we left Ray told me that she had chmldren rangmg from one to fourteen As we were walkmg down the street a dog tore the seat out of my pants Ray suggested that I get them replaced at the Hart Clothmg Store lere v e found Lyndon busrly washmg h1s blg plate glass wlndow Lyndon was very glad to see 'ne espec1a1ly wxth my torn pants As I was walkmg out of Lyndon s store I fell over h1s water bucket and turned my ankle Ray stopped a taxi and rushed me to the Shlnnyvllle Memorlal -Iospltal where registered nurse Barbara Showers Superintendent of the hospltal came to my rescue She was st1l1 smgle It was toward evening when we got out of the hospltal and Ray lnvlted me home for supper After supper Ray and I declded to go to a good movre I was much amazed to flnd Bob I-Iendrlcks manager of the theater The former Shlrley Kunkle now Mrs I-Iendrlcks was usher and was domg a sw ell job On the way home Ray s gas was gettlng low so we stopped at the blg Smclau' Flllmg Statlon at the north edge of what IS now Shlnnyvllle I was much surprxsed to see jim Shmabarger come and f1ll the tank up He mvlted us ln to look the place over Of course we had to pull our shoes and leave them outszde of the house S1ttmg there on a rockmg chan- was thls same blonde rundown glrl who I mentloned ln the begrn nmg She was controllmg the tractors m jzm s held by radar There was just one questxon that was st1ll puzzlmg me I asked Ray why jun was so well dressed and the rest of the merchants 1n town were practically ID rags I-Ie explamed to me that all these factones 1n town belonged to jlm Shlnabarger jun just put these names on the bulldmgs and let dlfferent people run them so as to avold paymg such a mgh mcome tax It was now txme for bed and I had only one more questlon to ask Qay IA ho was lm s Vx1f69 I-Ie vouldn t tell me because he sald It x ould be too bxg a mock nd to th1s day jun s wmie IS unkown to me By john jay Weber Z , , . 1 , , . , Q . . . 1 . g - V , . f . , V I . . . , . TL S. 29 A VIEW OF SCOUTING The scouting vear begins the second week of February Last year at e beginning of the new year there were nine scouts in the troop This seems like very few but for the size of our town we were pleased to have this number At the beginning of last year we set up a Calendar of Events for the coming year One of our mam objects vnas to plan a trip for the scouts after school was out After some careful planning it was decided to go north Two weeks after school was out Alva Oxender our scoutmaster and nine boy scouts with car and trailer set out The first night out we camped along Lake Michigan and the fir st thing the boys wanted to do was to go swimming Boy! Was that water cold The next day vue reached Holland Michigan where they hold the tul1p festlval every spring All those tulips in bloom was a very beautiful sight We took pictures of the old wmdmill in Holland and then went on our way We camped along Lake Michigan again the second night but none of the boys went swunming Too cold I suppose The third day we started homeward We stopped for the night at Claire Michigan again on the fourth day We arrived safely home that evening The mam idea of scouting is to give boys experience in outdoor life and to teach them to be useful citizens of tomorrow At our regular Friday night meetings we have plenty of fun as any scout will tell you The meetings are run by our Senior Patrol Leader Clem Stiving and then we have different games and contests of skill One of our many jobs IS to earn money for our scout fund Right now we are trying to get enough money to send one scout to the Jamboree held in Valley Forge Pennsylvania in june One way we have of getting money 15 collecting old paper For about two or three years we have been collecting paper and during Scouting week we sold our supply for thirty dollars If you have any paper you want to get rid of see one of the scouts and they will take it off your hands VK e also collect tax stamps which bring in quite a sum of money At the beginning of this new year in 1950 we have fourteen scouts having gain ed five new members Boys if you want to have lots of fun and at the same time feel that you are getting useful experience in leader sh1p and citizenship see our Scoutmaster Alva Oxender about Joining Troop 76 30 . t . ' D l D 'I The Mothers Flub The Mothers Club has become a part of the school system for the past twenty hve years Mrs Earl Moss was the flrst presldent The motwe m orgamzmg the women of the school dlstrzct was to ln some way help make our school a better place for the chlldren of the commumty Among some of the projects undertaken and completed were the purchaslng of the large American and school flags band umforms band instruments sewlng machine velvet drapes and rayon curtams for the stage equipped a flrst ald room and the kltchen ln that we bought stoves and had tables and cupboards built We purchased playground equipment some of wh1ch has worn out and been replaced wxth new thmgs most recent bemg the staxnless steel sllde obtained last year In the last two years we have helped purchase a large Westmghouse refrlg erator for the k1tchen and a movie projector We also purchased four large electr1c clocks for the four grade school rooms Recently we held a Carmval the proceeds whlch are set aside to purchase new band umforms There are other thxngs we are hopmg to do too One of the mam ways we have of raismg money 15 servmg dmners at the Farmer s Inshtute We have mixers whzch offer an evenlng of fun and entertaln ment for everyone Thls year we have the prwllege of servmg both the 4 H 5 H and 6 H banquets These will help to boost our treasury too We are the sponsormg orgamzatxon for the Boy Scout Troop No 76 We meet the f1rst Monday evemng of each month at the school we have a buslness sessxon a soclal perlod vnth an entertainment comm1ttee m charge followed by a carry ln lunch We do not collect dues but do have a penny march the proceeds of wh1ch are used as a m1xer fund We have a travelxng basket makmg lts rounds contammg varlous artxcles to tempt the house nie and add to the treasury All of the money raxsed IS used to make our school a better school we feel Congratulations to you the class of thxs year 1950 We of the Mother s Club wish you success m whatever you do xn l1.fe and should you choose to remaln in the Kunkle School dxstrlct we would apprecxate your support Wynona Armbruster Pre smdent 31 A 9 1 I - 9 J U n n . , . . .
