v 4 'N il M l Ll ll 1 Hands fff I n Retrospect Mme than 30 years ago, Mennonite people in this area began to feel the need for a local Christian School. Many parents wis to which to send their children. Although Lancaster Mennonite School was open, it was nable to board there. hed for a school with a Christian atmosphere pretty far to travel there each day and many were u For about lO years there was talk of starting a school in this locality and a few plans were made. The Lancaster Mennonite Conference School Board began to look for a place to start a new school. Then in l91l9, they approached the congregation of Kray- bill Mennonite Church near Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. They asked the members to at- tend nearby Mount Joy Mennonite Church and allow them to use the church building for the school. Counsel was taken of the church members and the plan was rejected. But after careful reconsideration the members did agree to the use of the building for a school. The building was renovated in the spring and summer of l949. Partitions were built to form classrooms. Several acres of land were bought in addition to the original church property. School opened in the fall of l949 with Grades l-lO. Registration that first year was 42. Teachers were Anna Ruth Charles qnow Mrs. Donald Jacobsj, Arlene Landis qnow Mrs. Nathan Hegej, Russelll. Baer, and I. Paul Saunder, Principal. Ruth Westenberger was school secretary. In the early l96O's the school board realized that more room was necessary for the growing school. Plans were made for a new classroom building. Work was begun in the spring of 1965. The new building contains two classrooms and the Home Economics de- partment. Use ofthe building was begun in the fall of 1965. This year is Kraybill School's 20th year of operation. Enrollment this year is l4O. Thirty-two of these are high school students in Grades 9 and lO. 0 0 0 show feeling unite us
