Bill Oates .. i The Class Of 78 Dedicates Its Book To IfSSL If you give joy in some small way, all your efforts seem worthwhile. That's the way an expression was quoted from a guy with alot of style. You've taken us through dreams of England within our Senior Play; turned memories to movies for us to share along the way. Tho It Happens Every Summer, it happens daily, too, students select a special friend from the teachers and our class feels that it's you. Bill Oates, the Class of '78 dedicates its book to you. . 2-Dedi cation . In education, as in construction, we've got to begin at the beginning (logically). Plans are drawn up and materials prepared before building, just as children are blueprints of their own adult beings and actually have begun their education even before they enter kindergarten. Then the foundation begins to be laid as the youngsters start kindergarten. Opening-5 From before the time we entered first grade, the Mustang Varsity has improvised gym facilities for its home games. For years we've borrowed Morgan's and Boone Grove's facilities. By fall of 1978, that will be changed! After all kinds of discussions and proposals, the Pleasant Township advisory board, consisting of trustee Carl Hefner, Wilbur Lippert, Frank Coatsolonia and George Maul, finally obtained permission from the state to start plans for a new addition to Kouts High School. The new facilities will contain a cafeteria, science labs, language labs, business education center, stage, and, of course, the long awaited gymnasium with remodeling plans to accomodate a new media center and art production rooms. If all goes according to plan, the class of '78 should be the first to graduate in this new gym. 6-Faculty Division FACULTY A. Even in the summer months, the schooi was busy. Students came and went for such activities as drivers' education and summer baseball. Volleyball and Cross Country practices began and before we knew it, the first day of school rolled around. After attending the traditional first day convocation, Kouts High School was once again in full session. 16 - Students Division Seniors Face Year Of Questions LESLIE PAUL ARNOLD LISA MARIE AVILES Les - Some things are so good, you never want to let them go. One of the first priorities at the beginning of every school year is to get KHS's organizations rolling again. School opened as it has for the past five years, with the Student Council sponsored pool party. In November, there was a bonfire and hayride at Drazer Park, which broke the monotony that fall sometimes has. Homecoming, on December 3, was a success. It began with the mini-Olympics on Friday, which were won by the Class of '79. Each class also decorated the halls for homecoming, and the winners were the Class of 82. The queen, Dina Coatsolonia, and princess, Jill Brantley, were crowned between the JV and Varsity games against North Newton. The weekend was topped off with a sock-hop following the game. In February, we had a Valentine's Dance, which went over well, and in March, a disco dance. The biggest event of the year, for most of the students, was the Spring Dance. The dance was held in the gym on May 6. It was very beautifully decorated and everyone enjoyed the evening. 58 -Activities Division ACTIVITIES A. The homecoming court this year included: princess Jill Brantley, who was escorted by Mike Herma, Bob Daugherty, with Theresa Carden, Scott Sutter, with Denise Knopf, John Lane escorting Gail Brown, Jim Claypool with Teri Brown, Tom Newland escorting queen Dina Coatsolonia, and Jeff Sandberg escorting Janet Yergler. The 77-78 school year was a good year for sports. Beginning with cross country in September, we've had some very outstanding achievements that should be recognized. Jim Mergl now holds the county record for cross country. The holder of this record before was also a Harrier, Kenny Kneifel. Jim's record will hopefully stand until another Kouts runner comes along to break it. The freshman basketball team impressed everyone by winning their tourney. Unfortunately, the varsity boys couldn't pull off a tourney win this year either. In the South County Tourney we came awfully close, only to lose a heartbreaker to Morgan on a last second shot in the finals. We fared about the same in the PCC Tourney beating LaCrosse, but falling to Hebron in the semi-finals. Although we didn't win the PCC Tourney, we captured two of the top 3 awards. Kouts cheerleaders and pep block won the cheering award for the second straight year. With the theme Smokey and the Mustangs, Kouts easily ran away with the award. Another highlight of the tourney, was the announcement of the winner of the M.E. Dinsmore award. It was given to a deserving Jeff Yergler. Jeff was a hardworking Mustang senior. At the finish of the basketball season, the Mustangs had acquired the best record in 32 years. This has definately proved to be an exciting year for the sports fans at KHS. tins HI «« If Hi a r 78-Sports Division A. Out to beat his opponent Jim Press pours on that last ounce of strength. B. All of those decisions, which were once too far in the future to even think about, were all of a sudden right there to be made. Everything was for the last time. As for the underclassmen—juniors were already anticipating their senior year, with a kind of disbelief that it will actually be their last. Everybody else felt the same as they had in previous years: Another year down,_more to go! 94-Ads Division ADVERTISEMENTS Business Patrons Parent Patrons • Mr. Mrs. Harold Fritz Claussens Floral • Ronald Ruby Herma Good's Restaurant-LaCrosse Mr. Mrs. Lester Hoover Johnson's Drive-In Mr. Mrs. John Herma Kouts Inn • Mr. Mrs. Wayne Kistler Moolenaar Music Mr. Mrs. Keith King Phillip Snyder, Auctioneer Mr. Mrs. Stephen E.
