JUNIORS: Phil Gingerich, Fred Simic, Tom Tucker, and Dave Rodrick. BASEBALL SUMMARY The Kouts Mustangs baseball team in the year of 1959 compiled a record of three wins and four losses in County Conference competition. Although the Mus- tangs lost to Chesterton, the game didn't count in the conference standings where the Mustangs finished fourth. The start of the season was a very rough road for the team. After losing the opener in extra innings to Hebron by a five to four count, the Mustangs lost three more straight games before beating Jack- son six to one in a fine played game by the Kouts squad. The Mustangs then won the last two out of three games of the season, beating Wheeler 18-2, losing to Morgan 7-3, and winning the last game of the season by a 19-5 count over Liberty. Marvin Heinold, a senior, won the batting championship, hitting a nifty 474. — 29 — Melvin Heir bld, Dave Rodrick, Tom Tucker, Fred Pumroy, Dennis Gesse, Ron Dye, Phil Gingerich, Curt Simic, Tom Sommers, Marvin Heinold, Coach Bob Gray. — 30 — ' Fred Dove Tom Melvin SCORES Kouts Opponents 66 Wonatoh 57 50 DeMofte 60 30 North Judson 49 58 Hebron 51 62 Morgan 53 48 Lacrosse 57 57 Highland 73 83 Washington 71 76 Liberty 48 54 Union Mills 47 51 Boone Grove 63 75 Jackson 54 69 Westville 52 64 Wheeler 48 57 San Pierre 79 45 Wheatfield 49 SOUTH COUNTY TOURNEY Kouts .56 Kouts . 58 SECTIONAL TOURNEY Kouts - - 48 Wheeler (OT) . 44 Kouts _ _ 65 Chesterton . 66 PORTER COUNTY TOURNEY Kouts _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 76 Washington . 47 Kouts . 54 Kouts . 69 Curt Tom Dennie Phil 31 First Row: Roger Timm, Tom Redelman, Joe Curtis, Ted Wienke, Reese Shepard, Douglas Adkins, Mr. Gray (Coach). SUMMARY The Mustangs got off to a running start last fall by having a very success- ful Cross Country season. Two of the team's biggest wins were the County Conference meet in Valparaiso, making them County Champs, and the Kankakee Valley Athletic Association meet giving them another championship. Mel Hein- old was awarded a medal at the County and a trophy at the KVAA for his indi- vidual firsts in these meets. He was the team's mainstay throughout the year winning nine of the ten meets in which the team participated. — 34 — Fir Row: Lorry Homonn, Jim Upton, Fred Pumroy, Phil Gingerich, Dave Roderick, Richard Clouser, Tom Sommers.
