Chorus: Leaving, leaving, leaving the days at dear K. H. S. Leaving, leaving, leaving all our teachers and our friends; Walking down the hallway with our memories. Remembering the days of good old K.H.S. gone by, gone by, Wishing we could live them all again. Class Poem Katherine Benson with her clothes so new, Is on her way to old Purdue. Leslie Birky has College in mind, Success in life we’re sure he’ll find. Wes Birky drives a little red Ford. When he steps on the gas, PRAISE THE LORD. In almost all activities Ruth Cannon belonged, With her leadership and dependability she can’t go wrong. John Clarke, a good dancer he may be. His plans consist of joining the Army. Jerri Dusek, known as Du. There isn’t anything she won’t do. Barry Fritz is quite a sport, A girl from Portage he does court. To own Heinold’s Elevator is Jim’s goal. To him college comes first we all know. Dick Hiatt, our plumber to be. When your pipes leak, him you’ll see. Madeline Herma, short and slim, Over lile’s road we re sure she’ll skim. Virginia Jahnz has only one need, To be with her one and only, Jim Reed. Pat Kasl could be a scholar if she tried. But everyone knows that she would rather be a bride. Glen Kneifel, our City Service man, No one knows what he has planned. Bill Kerns, a clown indeed. As an engineer we know he’ll succeed. Pauline Luthi, our winner of D. A. R. With the help of I. Larry Maxwell can always be found. For Valpo Tech he is bound. A soldier in rank Don Miller wants to be. A born philosopher and liked by all is he. A model Nancy Miller has the shape to be. But she can’t be convinced of this you see. Sam Miller is a preacher’s son. His fights with Betty are never done. Verna Nuest’s time is well spent. Helping Mrs. T. find where the money went. Vernon Nuest, our crop judging man. To be a successful farmer is his plan. Betty Oswald plans to be a nurse. Parts of Anatomy she will search. Nan Olson has Purdue in mind. Val Schultz, known to many as Moose, Our food is hidden when he’s on the loose. John Stewart is Air Force bound. From his garage has come many a strange sound. Bev Tucker has dramatics in mind, Between LaCrosse and Kouts she does fine. Don Upton, better known as Skip, Of life’s pleasures we know he’ll sip. Bob Taylo is headed out west. He wants to be a pilot, among the best. Butch is Wendell Werner’s nick name. We’re sure He’ll bring I. U. fame. Although, being as psychologically complex as befits a senior class, we consist of 32 separate and distinct entities, or what have you, we are in such complete accord, thinking alike, and seldom, that the editorial - now, alas, funeral - “we” will be used to denote our collective entity throughout this document. We. the senior class, leave to the Freshmen a map of the school, so that they will not get lost and roam about in everybody’s way looking for their class- rooms. V e, the senior class, give to our friends, the Sophomore class, our patience. It w P be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the Juniors. We, the senior class, give and bequeath, freely and without reservations to t o Jprior class our good luck. It made us what we are to-day, and it should satisfy them. We. the senior class, give to the school, and our teachers, the faculty of Kouts High School, free from all inheritance, luxury, or income tax, our entire store of knowledge. From them it came and to them it should be returned, that others may be benefited by it as we have been. Glass History In the year 1946 forty-one wonders entered the first grade with Mrs. Benson endeavoring to prepare us for the problems that we were to face in reaching our goal as graduates of 1958. (Remember when Vernon got a spanking for a low grade when Verna actually had the low grade). Those wonders who entered and are still with us are Katherine Benson, Leslie Birky, Wesley Birky, Ruth Ann Cannon, Geraldine Dusek, Barry Fritz, James Heinold, Virginia Jahnz, Patricia Kasl, Laura Maul, Larry Maxwell, Owen Martin, Verna Nuest, Vernon Nuest, Betty Oswald, Sharon Reinhardt, Valiant Schultz. John Stewart, Beverly Tucker, Donald Upton, Wendell Werner, and Pauline Luthi. As we started the second step toward our goal with Mrs. Hofferth as our guide, we found that we had gained three and lost one. Joining the wonders were Nancy Miller. Richard Hiatt, and Donald Miller, making the total forty-three. (Remember when Pat Kasl got kicked out of class for fighting.) Under the supervision of Mrs. Filer we began our third year with the heavy loss of six but we discovered that Madeline Herma had joined the wonders mak- ing our total forty-nine. (Remember when Ruth Ann Cannon was made captain of the Boys’ baseball team.) We ascended to the second floor to meet our teacher for the fourth year. Mrs. Nocco. Our total enrollment was thirty-eight. (Pauline Luthi was spanked this year and John Stewart’s dinner was conviscated.) The fifth year brought a great surprise to us; our teacher, Mr. Mundy, was “a man”. We began with a total enrollment of thirty-seven. This was the most peaceful year of our journey. (Mr. Mundy had the misfortune of sitting on a tack placed on his seat by Katherine Benson.) As we entered our last year of grade school with Mr. Galasso we lost five of our wonders and found that Bill Kerns had joined making our total forty-one. (One of the highlights of our sixth year was the addition of Bill Kerns, Wes Bir- ky, and Betty Oswald’s names to Mr. Galasso’s paddle.) In our first year of Junior High we had the privilege of having Mr. Galasso as our sponsor to advise us in our new experiences. Nancy Olson joined us this year. (Jim Heinold had to stand with his nose in a circle on the blackboard in math class.) Our second year of Junior High began with thirty-seven wonders under the guidance of Mr. Hospers and Mrs. Kennedy. John Clarke, Glen Kneifel, Sam Mil- ler, and Bob Taylo joined us. (Remember when Virginia Jahnz used the stair banister for a taxi.) In our ninth year under the guidance of Mr. Gray we participated in the freshman initiation with the initiation being carried on by our upper classmen. (Those screams were Nancy Miller being shocked with a pig shocker.) Once again we found Mr. Gray as our sponsor as we entered our tenth year. (This time the screams were made by Sharon Reinhardt when she found a dead rat in her locker.) We were privileged in our junior year as we found Mr. Taylor as our spon- sor. Many exciting things happened in our junior year including our junior play cl.maxed with a pizza party afterwards. We began our senior year with a total of thirty-two under the guidance of Miss Dittmer. We’ll always remember the senior play but most of all the play fractices, the day we picked up corn, the yearbook staff meetings, our trip, and graduation. Music Summary As we looked out the windows of the school building during the months of September and October we saw the band marching diligently. It gave us a tired feeling and left us wondering how they could march all period and still look sharp. We soon found out that they were practicing for the LaCrosse Fall Fes tival Parade and the annual Valparaiso Homecoming Parade at which they placed second among Class CC bands. As winter came nearer the band came inside where both they and the chorus began practicing for the Chesterton Exchange Concert and the Band and Chorus Christmas Concert. During February several students entered the Solo and Ensemble contest and received high ratings. The band and chorus helped to get people in the spring mood by presenting a spring concert in March March proved to be an important month for the band and chorus because on March 29 the band and chorus entered the District Band and Chorus Contest. The band received a 1st and the chorus a 2nd. On April 12 the band went to the State Band Contest. During this month the v.il County Music Festival was held. This year the mass chorus and band did a selection together entitled “Born To Be Free”. Ending a very busy year the band and chorus presented a Pop Concert dur- ing the middle of May. This consisted of all popular songs. The following seniors were honored at this concert: Katherine Benson, band and chorus; Les Birky, chorus; Wes Birky, chorus; Ruth Cannon, band and chorus; Jerri Dusek, chorus; Virginia Jahnz. band and chorus; Glen Kneifel, chorus; Pauline Lut'ni, band and chorus; Laura Maul, band and chorus; Nancy Miller, chorus; Sam Miller, chorus; Vernon Nuest, chorus; Nancy Olson, band and chorus; Betty Oswald, band and chorus; Sharon Reinhardt, chorus; John Stewart, chorus; Beverly Tucker, band ind chorus. f.irls 4 II The Kouts Sunshine 4-H Club under the leadership of Mrs. Peggy Chael ac- complished much in the year of 57”. Pep Club The Pep Club for the year 57-58 had fifty-seven members. The officers were Ruth Cannon, president; Pauline Luthi, vice-president; Virginia Jahnz, secretary; and Nancy Olson, treasurer. At a September meeting it was decided to buy a juke box for the school. It was also decided to pay for the cheerleaders’ outfits. In November the Pep Club voted to purchase gold sweat shirts. These were used to form blocks at the county and sectional tourneys. The group voted to have a white cheering block with a black M for the South County Tourney. At the County Tourney they had a gold block and put on a half time card show. The block chosen for the sectional was gold outlined in black. The Pep Club had a total of nine meetings. They also sponsored four “sock hops” after various basketball games. Library Club During the past years the Library Club has had a full time job of bringing the card catalogue up to date. By having several work nights and using study periods this job is on its way to being accomplished. Also the starting of a grade school card catalogue has kept them busy. Junior Journalists During the past year the Junior Journalists, Class of 1959, published four issues of the KOUTSCRIPT. The first issue was passed out to the Junior Class as an example to study. The next two copies were passed out to the student body. The last issue was passed out too, “passed out the door to the fire.” V AT THE END OF OUR JOURNEY WE RETURNED TO K. I:. S . TO REMINISCE ON OUR PAST ACTIVITIES. Senior Play The play opens with a dance in full swing at a sorority house at a co edu- cational college. Suddenly, while the lights are out and a blue light is playing back and forth on the dancers and while the boys are changing partners dur- ing a “cut-in dance, a gill screamte and a moment later the boy (Jim Hein- old) with whom she was dancing is found lying on the floor, dead—mysteriously murdered. The dancers are stunned, dazed. Who killed him? And why? Judy (Pauline Luthi), with whom the boy was dancing, is the most popular girl in col- lege. Also the cleverest. When the hard-boiled detective (Bill Kerns) fails to solve the mystery with his roughshod methods, third-degreeing everybody present from the Dean of Women (Betty Oswald) to the college crooner (Wendell Werner), Judy persuades the detective to turn the case over to her. Then, alone with the girls and boys and the Dean of Women and the Dean of Men (Glen Kneifel), Judy uses her own technique and has almost discovered who killed the boy when suddenly another boy (Val Schultz) is mysteriously murdered. Everyone now has the jitters. Who is the killer and who will the next victim be? In quick succes- sion come thrills and laughs because as it turns out, this play is a play within a play. ---O Junior Play Danny Churchill (Jim Heinold) gets shipped out to the dilapidated family ranch in Arizona because his family thinks a year out where men are men and girls are scarce is just what Danny needs. Danny arrives in a taxi; the bill to- tals around $700.00; but how else would you get from New York to Arizona? In addition, the taxi driver (John Stewart) nearly gets strung up for his critical re- marks about the region. The caretaker (Wendell Werner) views Danny, appalled. Can this city dude actually be a member of the scrapping Churchill clan, famous throughout Arizona? But Danny quickly proves he has ideas of his own. He turns the place into a swank Dude Ranch and soon the place is lively enough with eastern girls and singing cowboys. But it’s the western girl. Molly, (Beverly Tuc- ker) and not any of the imports, who interests Danny. Just as Molly is begin- ning to wonder if Danny means it, another New York visitor (Bill Kerns) ap- pears. He has some scores to settle with Danny and does a quick job of convinc- ing Molly that she’s just being strung along, but Danny has still other enemies. A pair of bandits (Don Upton and Bob Taylo) plan to get him out of there fast and it’s all the same to them if he goes by taxi, train or feet first. m m ■fm - - St a Sfr; X) Xl)o. r c_ TvApp t I V 1 ou ■tti« -«. «.t I a.
