%'H : ■ 't; The k n staxp Published by the o Kouts High School Volume IX 19 5 5 Forward The Kankakee River, Burns Ditch until dredged in 1910, is known to many of us for its recreational value. In the summer we fish, swim, boat, and in the winter fish and hunt along its banks. Along the river is a fort used by La Salle as he passed through this country. Trenches dug in the earth make the shape of the fort. Because of the memories, past and present, of the Kankakee River we have selected pictures and scenes of the river as our theme. DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1955, dedicate this book to one whose high quality In being both teacher and leader has influenced and bettered each of us both mentally and morally. While our futures were being molded through the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades he gave much of his t Ime in those three years to guide us as our sponsor. Because of his untiring effort to better educate us as individuals so that, as students, we might be more able to meet the world and be better citizens, we dedicate this book to Robert E. Br oa d. Don Schoon is first on our list. He’s sweet sixteen and never been missed. Vera Krug is quite feminine, When she blushes, it is genuine. Bernice Dowd is our class blonde, Of men in uniform she is fond. Dave Kotzer has kinky black hair, Without it his head would be bare. Wayne Miller is a very nice guy, His looks make many a girl sigh. Alice Kay is a girl with a high 1. Q. Being a secretary is what she’d like lo do. Kay Simic is a spry little thing, She’s still waiting for a ring. Kay Krueger is fun and hard to fool, She’d rather have a home than be in school. Ron Winski is always calm and collected. By worries and cares, he’s never affected. Ronnie Sommers is always dressed to a “T”, He’s already planned what he’s going to be. Donna Sutter was our director, With our class play, we almost wrecked her. Bev Wray is the smallest girl in our class, Everyone wonders if her love will last. Dick Goodpaster with school is bored, He’d rather putt around in his black Ford. Rose Dusek would give her right arm, To be with Marv on the Montdale Farm. Roger Redelman is our class clown. For college, he is bound. Roger Cannon likes LaPorte, A girl from there, he likes to court. Glenn Hefner, the way he drives, Everyone wonders how his riders survive. Janet Gingerich is our class brunette, A wedding ring is what she’ll get. Glen Good is our co-editor, Louis Armstrong is his cornet competitor. Clarence Grieger has a fancy car, But it will only go so far. Sandy Olson, the shortest boy in our class. With his art ability, he will pass. Bill Salzer’s dad is the school trustee. Will Bill do the same? Wait and see. A studious boy is Warren Monroe, After College he’ll make dough. Joan Birky is often quoted. Tor piano playing she is noted. Hranium bound is Jim McKinney, We wonder if he’ll ever find any. Jerry Daumer likes geometry, But he can’t decide what he wants to be. Roy Atherton has a nice car, Give him some gas and he’ll go far. This is our class roll. Success in the future is our goal. Class History In the year 1943, twenty-seven passengers boarded the Kankakee Steamer to start their 12 year journey to education. Sixteen are still with us. They are: Clarence, Roger Cannon, Dick, Jerry, Glen Hefner, David, Wayne, Bill, Joan, Bernice, Rose, Alice, Janet, Vera, Evelyn, and Donna. We will never forget the times we were tied in our seats and put in corners. It must have been a good year for three entered and one left. As we entered the second grade, Miss Drazer, our teacher helped us to write our names. We gained six and lost three. We had twenty- four members that year. In the third grade, with Mrs. Filer as our teacher, we entered with twenty- three members. We were divided into groups and acted out stories from our reader. Six entered this year and two left. We entered the fourth grade with twenty-four pupils, with Miss Chelf as our guide. During the year four more entered and two left. We remember especially giving the operetta, “Tom Sawyer.” The sixth grade was the greatest year. Mrs. Watson was our captain and we remember when she won a mink stole. We also won the spelling contest. We gave fables and a Christmas play with the fourth and fifth grades. We shall always remember the day we entered the seventh grade, for we had to get used to the changing classes. During the seventh and eighth grade three new students entered. Thirty-five graduated from the eighth grade. Mr. Broad was our leader. The years from 9-12 were the years we enjoyed the most. We gained four, who are still with us. Mr. Broad still guided us as freshmen. Mrs. Kennedy sponsored us as sophomores. During our eleventh year we journeyed with the Seniors to the Wisconsin Dells for our class trip. We will always remember those three days of excursions up and down the dells and endles parties which went on. With Mr. French’s guidance we stuck to our course. Now, as we come to the end of our journey, Seniors at last, we visited the state legislature with the Juniors. To finish the year the Juniors and Seniors en- joyed a vacation to Spring Mill in southern Indiana. These are but some of our memories of the twelve years of school as we, the twenty-eight Seniors of 1955, remember them. Class Will I SANDY OLSON, will my Buick to anyone who owns a gas station. Class Prophecy History has proven that Ogden Dunes was not a good plcae for the Worlds Largest Port, so it is now built at Baum’s Bridge. One fine day Joan Birky and Kay Simic, co-captains of the Kankee Steamer set out in a journey down the Kankakee River. The first thing to meet their eye was a blushing mermaid flapping her tail in the water. Who should it be but Vera Krug. After the shock she told us some of our classmates lived along the same river. So we pointed our steamer down the stream and started off. As we drew near Bachelor’s Heaven we noticed two men floating lazily down the river on a raft. They were feeding squirrels home brewed moonshine. As they waved we noticed they were none other than Wayne and Dave. We discussed old times and they told us they were married but came out here to forget their little troubles (twelve to be exact). Later we decided to get a bite to eat, anything but fish. We docked by a little cafe. As we drew closer we heard someone beating on a piano. It was Dick Good- paster. He decided to give Liberace some competition by pounding away on the piano and letting his hair grow. Along side of him we saw a little man playing a violin who was our own Roger Cannon. As we looked up we saw a blonde sitting on top of the piano with her blonde hair dangling in her eyes. You’d never guess it to be Alice Kay. She jumped from the piano to tell us some news about Roger Redelman who deserted her to go to the foreign legion with Glen Good. After we had had enough to eat, we went on our way. As we were gliding along we saw a little man setting traps for river rats. Wc found it to be Glenn Hefner. Our ship began to sputter and Glenn told us there was a gas station not far ahead. When we arrived at the station to gas up our steamer, who should be running the station but Kay Krueger, now Mrs. Knopf. Jim was letting her take care of the station while he chased the twelve kids around the tent in which they lived. Kay told us Evelyn and Chuck lived just across the river. They started making Pontiacs but ended up with Fords that sprout wing and are jet propelled. Wc decided to go down Crooked Creek so we dropped the wheels on our steamer and drove down river road. There sat a glass house heated by the sun and Janet was watching her forty inch colored television while Ronald was in the kitchen washing dishes with “Winski’s Hopeless Soap.” This soap is manufactured by Ron Winski. We stopped and Janet told us Roy lived on a ranch not far away and raised Shetland ponies. Jerry, Sandy, and Don Schoon were employed by Roy; they clean the stables. Not far from Roy’s ranch was a huge poultry farm. This was operated by none other than Ronnie Sommers and Clarence. They had three of our classmates picking chickens for them. They were Jim, Bill, and Bev. We talked to them for a while and they told us that Warren has now taken Miss Dittmer s place as English teacher at Kouts High School. We finally arrived at CroOiced Creek. Then we came upon Grape Island and found Donna, Rosie, and Bernice frantically clearing away the grapes so they would have a place to live. It got a little foggy so we decided to dock on Lone Tree Island. We both agreed it had been a very enjoyable trip because we had heard about and seen the whole c'ass of ’55. Music To start off the year, October 2, 1954, the marching band was one of the 150 bands to participate in the All High School Band Day Program at the Indiana University. Three weeks later our band marched in the annual homecoming parade at Valparaiso. Although they did not win first prize, we can be very proud of our Marching Band. On the second day of December the all county music festival was held at Boucher Gym in Valparaiso. Thirteen students from Kouts played in the mass county band under the direction of A1 Wiight of Purdue University. The mass county chorus composed of 350 voices was conducted by Richard Schoenbohn of Valparaiso University. Each school had a group perform to represent them. The Senior quartet, Roger Redelman, Glen Good, Warren Monroe, and Wayne Miller, representing Kouts sfcng “I Got Shoes.” On December 17, the Kouts Music Department presented its annual Christmas concert. This concert was given in appreciation of our parents and music booster efforts to purchase our new risers. The solo and ensemble contest was held at Hammond, Indiana, on February 5, 1955. Thirty-seven students participated in the contest in thirty-two events representing Kouts Music Department. They received 17 superior ratings and 11 excellent ratings. In the vocal department one first and one third were received by the two students participating. Glen Good singing a tenor solo received first and Lois Rodrick singing a soprano solo received a third. The state solo and ensemble contest was held at Indianapolis, February 12, 1955. Kouts had 4 students representing them in 5 events. Carol Danford received first in her saxaphone solo and in a saxaphone duet with Sherry Heinold. Glen Good received second in his cornet and tenor solos. Janice Birky received a third in a clarinet solo. February 15, the band and chorus gave an exchange concert for Boone Grove at their school. March 9, the band and chorus gave a midwinter concert. April 2, the band and chorus district contest was held at Valparaiso University. April 16, the band and chorus state contest was at Whiting. April 22, Music boosters sponsored a Minstrel Show. Band Officers Band Directors Glen Good, Jeannette Werner, San- Roger Redelman, Glen Good, dra Schneckenburger, Donna Sutter. — K. . Beef, (Roger Redelman) Captain of the football team had offered to help Giinny in history. (Beef was working a condition on the subject.) GinnyV. brother, Les, (Dick Goodpaster) was on her side; he was sick of being the brother of a child wonder. Les wanted to play the bass drum in the high school band; he believed he didn’t need to know music; all he needed was the drum. He discovered Molly Woods (Bev Wray) whose father (Glen Hefner) was her chief danger. Ginny’s father (Wayne Miller) had promised not to brag on her records but sometimes forgot and caused many anxious moments. Foggy, (Glen Good) drum major of the marching band, saw Ginny’s cup and showed it to Beef who realiezd he had been helping a brain in history. To prove she wasn’t smart, Ginny copied the wrong answers on an exam. She admitted copying to Miss Bigby (Evelyn Jahnz) but Beef was suspended. Without Beef, the team couldn’t win the big game. Franny (Janet Gingerich) the professor’s (Warren Monroe) daughter tried to help. To- gether Ginny and Franny succeeded in making the whole team sick by putting opicac in their cocoa. They almost got into trouble with the law but at the final curtain Ginny had her date with Beef. Other characters were Laura - Joan Birky; Barbara - Vera Krug; Miss Spencer- Donna Sutter; Cheerleaders, Kay Gingerich, Kay Simic, Kay Krueger; Members of the team - Bill Salzer, Roy Atherton, and Dave Kotzer; Miss Dittmer was the faculty director and Bernice Dowd the student director. — K. . S. — Senior Play THE POOR FISH Sylvester Fish (Roger Redelman) got into a heap of trouble the minute he appeared on stage. When he walked into the house he had inherited from his uncle, Sylvester Fish Sr. (Don Schoon) he didn’t expect to find it as a Rest Cure Sanitorium run by Florence Arlington (Joan Birky). Things started happening the moment Sue (Evelyn Jahnz) and her brother Billy (Dick Goodpaster) arrived and insisted they owned the house. Later, Sylvester found out that Francine, (Janet Gingerich) the girl he planned to marry, had been told he was paying Margaret's (Rose Dusek) expenses in the home. Aubrey Nutt. (Glen Good) a friend of Sylvester, tried to help him out but nothing seemed to help; he only got in deeoer. Another woman (Bernice Dowd) claimed he was her husband. A few hours later a second Mrs. Fish (Kay Krueger) arrived. To top it off Sylvester got into trouble with the law. Francine believed he was a bigamist and left him. Sue had sympathy for Sylvester; ai the final curtain Sylvester’s troubles are over and Sue became engaged to him. Other characters were: Mariposa - Kay Simic; Lola Paine-Kay Gingerich; Randall Chase - Ronnie Sommers; Warda Jewel - Vera Krug; Justis Sommers - Roy Atherton; Ella - Bev Wray. Miss Dittmer was the faculty director and Warren Monroe the student director. 4 Bus Drivers LEFT TO RIGHT — Clarence Landfadt, Oscar Maxwell, Bob Claussen, Joe Gingerich, Elden Birky, Ben Birky. — K.
