Some Visit Foreign Lands VVouldn't it be wonderful if we could all board a plane together and ily to Bombay, Paris, Rome, or any other foreign port? Unfortunately, this is entirely impossible, yet many students have an opportunity to visit the world beyond our boundaries when they enter one of the Social Studies classes. Here, the student learns of the people of a country as well as its world position. America has created an idea in government- Democracy. lt is the responsibility of the present generation to uphold the high standards of freedom in America. That is why every gradu- ating senior has had one year of Government. Although this is a required subject, students en- joy participating in the mock elections and serving on the many panels. To make these classes vivid and more effec- tive, there is a Social Studies laboratory supervis- ed by lllr. lfred Mustard, head of the department. ln this room there are displays on the various related topics of government and history. These are just two of the different subjects offered as a part of the Social Studies Depart- ment. In addition, there are classes in American History, lilconomics, and Sociology, geared and provided to give each student in KHS a better understanding of his world and community. Stud ing in the General Course A Dissecting earth worms, studying microscopic organisms, and classifying the species of animals, these students are busy learning the principles of biology with the assistance of Mr. Cross. A'l-ook at that paramicium squirmln exclaims an excited biology student while peering through his microscope. Biology is the study of plant and animal life and to some three hundred freshmen and sophf omores of Kokomo High School, biology class oiters an opportunity for them to investigate the plant and animal kingdom. They learn many interesting things when look- ing through microscopes at several of the world's microscopic plants and animals, and by dissecting animals to End the structure of their bodies. Going on field trips gives pupils a chance to see nature first hand, even though they may come back covered with burrs and perhaps one or two of them may even have taken a fall into the creek. Four capable teachers are responsible for these classes. They are Mr. Walter Cross, Mr. Charles Franklin, Mr. foe Mullins, and Mr. Douglas North. Charles Guy, Emily Burger, Robert Short, and Virginia Alaska plant coleuses and gladioli in Mr. Franklin's biology class. Page 19

Really, he's quite a good student and is able to distinguish between a prepositional phrase and an adverbial clause with very little difficulty. Now here's a lovely scene! A sophomore girl is busy leafing through an Encyclopaedia Hritaziniicrz. The ink spots on her nose and her crumpled hair show that she wants this to be the best book report ever presented. VVhat's this? A junior reciting llfacbeflzf Ah, yes, he is memorizing the lines of Shakespeare's great tragedy for literature class today. There is really no need to look for any Senior Composition stud- dents in the hall-they are all in the library working on their term papers. They certainly have chosen interesting subjects . . , brainwashing, money, Salem witchcraft, to mention a few. Perhaps you are wondering who I am. You may see me sponsoring the school newspaper as well as the Sargasso. You may hnd me back- stage of any major production, and you may find me in a classroom everyday. ,l am the spirit of the linglish teachers of Kokomo High School. Page 21
