Foreign exchange students if f luis... l . rv ,MW -5 ll Betty and Ulla talk with some of their friends. ti Q Betty Fraile was one of Kofa's foreign exchange students this year. She actually graduated in her hometown, Los Castores, Ven- ezuela, but she came here to learn about the language and the people. She lived with the Bald- win family during her stay. Betty used hot as her one word to describe Yuma. In her opinion, the boys are very friendly and helpful. Ulla Kivioja was our other foreign exchange student. With blond hair and blue eyes, Ulla, who is seventeen, comes from Finland. Her foster family was the Pettits. Her favorite thing about Kofa was all the things that belonged to a school day, especially the people. G fi ,awww s WMS Betty and Ulla take a few minutes for rest before going to their next class. Model U.N. teaches Kofans leadership abililies .MPTN 'Mi Model U. N. Delegates: B. Umstead, S. Hamma, D. Ambur, T. Pallack and G. Lyle. Missing: T. Boswell, R. Moran and J. Deyo. This year, eight students attended the Arizona Model United Nations Assembly that was held at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The model U. N. is a simulated session of a meeting of the Gen- eral Assembly where each of the countries involved is represented by an Arizona high school. Kofa stu- dents represented two countries-Senegal and Mauri- tania. Before attending the Assembly, the group studied the customs, life styles, beliefs and cultures of the countries so that they were able to represent them properly at the Assembly. Some of the issues that were discussed were: Refugees from Palestine, Colonization, and Terrorism. The featured speaker at the banquet was Lester Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada. Kofans practice Brotherhood Delegates: Annette Bombard, Steve Norton, Camille Sinclair, John Becker, Becky Umstead, Steve Hamma and Freda Drysdale. Anytown's theme this year was Turn on to Life. The camp was located on Mingus Mountain. Morning activities included optional nature hikes and hillside sings. During their stay, the Anytowners attended workshops every day. Some of the work- shops were Let's Join the Human Race, Comparative Religion, and Yoga. Culture night, Skit night and an all night party were a few of the nightly activities. One Anytowner's comment was An experience l'll never forget, if everyone could go to Anytown, the world would be a better place to live. NCCJ, which stands for National Conference of Christians and Jews, is a national organization set up to combat racial and religious prejudices. This year, eight Kofans attended the Conference held at Glen- dale Community College. During the morning, stu- dents listened to speakers, in the afternoon, they di- vided into discussion groups. The groups chose the subjects they wanted to discuss and led the discus- sions themselves with people from various commun- ity works. . M...
