Hannon, R. Sanchez. FTA Every y ea r the Future Teach- ers of America tries to acquaint its members with the challenges and opportunities for the teaching profession. Three of Kofa's FTA officers attended an officer's workshop in Gilbert, Arizona during Oct- ober. At this workshop they received ideas for fund raising projects and leadership skills. The club broke d ow n into groups a n d visited different schools, this helped the students know which field of teaching would interest them. FBLA FBLA, was a club for stu- dents who were looking forward to careers in business. The chief objective was to develop strong, aggressive leadership so that stu- dents might participate more ef- fectively in t h e business and community life of which they are a part. In order to turn out highly qualified business p eople, the club attempted to strengthen the confidence of the individual and his work, and to encourage mem- bers to develop character and leadership by working together in the home, the business, and the community. The club also attempted to c r e a t e a better understanding of business and develop an active interest in the members, the c h o i c e of an occupation. Fredricks B. Galland, D. lllis. CHESS CLUB Any student having a grade average of 2.5 and interested in chess may send in a letter of ap- plication to the club. The Chess Club had many activities, some of which were car washes, bake sales, a Halloween-Awards Ban- quet, and two conventions in Phoenix and Tucson. The club also attended their first state invitational tournament and won the first annual Yuma-Kofa Chess tournament. SCIENCE CLUB Science Club was an organiza- tion formed to promote a better understanding of the sciences. The Science C l u b sponsored many activities which pertained to different fields of science. They co-sponsored an annual dance with Quill and Scroll as one of t h e i r money-making projects. Some of their other projects included, bringing in guest speakers to talk on subjects such as Light, Atomic Energy, Astronomy, Optical Functions, and Astrology. Night meetings were held to offer the use of their famed telescopes to the interested people of the commu- nity. They also produced a movie for use at the lVlardi Gras, and obtained charts to be used by the school. They also sponsored an annual trip to Kitt Peak National Observatory outside of Tucson, Arizona. FNA was I e d by Maureen Hanson a n d boosted by our school nurse, Mrs. Saxe, ut Christmas candy canes to be sold the week before VHCGUOU- Mrs. Saxe, Kofa's nurse and sponsor of FNA, hands a box of candy to a member.
